Chapter 103: Chapter 103: Study Hard
After berating Vera Xavier, Rona Langdon turned on Cara Preston. "And you, youāre an idiot, too! Arenāt your grades usually excellent? How did you end up with a score like this! Youāve completely embarrassed me today!"
Cara Preston could only endure the scolding.
But Rona Langdonās anger hadnāt subsided. She poked Cara Prestonās forehead and said, "From now on, youād better stay home and study properly. If you dare go out running wild every day again, Iāll break your legs!"
Cara Preston didnāt need Rona Langdon to tell her that. With her grades dropping so drastically, she certainly didnāt dare to keep fooling around.
Ever since a chance encounter with Nathaniel Nathan, she had become convinced that she was in love with him, falling head over heels and unable to escape her feelings. In truth, her recent late nights were spent simply trying to catch a glimpse of him.
And now that Nathaniel Nathan would be visiting the Preston family, she knew sheād have more opportunities.
Zachary Prestonās head throbbed from listening to Rona Langdon berate Vera Xavier and Cara Preston. "Thatās enough," he said in a low voice. "Go make dinner."
Rona Langdon stomped into the kitchen in a huff, slamming pots and pans around with a loud CLATTER. She muttered all sorts of nasty things under her breath as she started cooking.
Zachary Preston sighed and said to Vera Xavier and Cara Preston, "Go on upstairs and study. Iāll call you down for dinner when your mom is done."
As they were heading upstairs, Zachary Preston added, speaking to Cara Preston, "Cara, your grades slipped so much this time. You need to focus on your studies."
Cara Preston nodded. "Iāll work hard."

Once they were upstairs, Cara Preston finally couldnāt hold back. "Did you do that on purpose today?" she demanded of Vera Xavier.
"On purpose what?" Vera asked.
Cara Prestonās eyes were filled with suspicion as she looked at her, but Veraās expression was open and composed. Cara had no choice but to press on. "Sis, you know Mom gets upset when you do well on a test. Why did you..."
"Itās because Iāve figured things out," Vera said calmly. "I canāt spend my entire life trying to win Momās favor. What if I spend my whole life trying to please her, and she still doesnāt like me? What am I supposed to do then?"
Cara Preston was taken aback. Vera continued, "Now that Iāve realized that, Iām going to live for myself from now on."
With that, she went to open her bedroom door. As she did, Cara looked at her and asked, "Sis, how exactly did you cheat on this exam? How did you get such a high score?"
"Is it a high score?" Vera said nonchalantly. "Iām actually quite dissatisfied with it. Itās much worse than my entrance exam score for No. 1 High School. When you think about it, my grades have also slipped badly. I need to work hard, too."
Hearing that, Cara Preston was so angry she could have thrown herself from the third-floor landing. But Vera just smiled and said, "Iām going to study now. Feel free to come ask me if thereās anything you donāt understand!"
With that, she slammed the door shut with a loud BANG. Cara, who had been standing too close, nearly had her nose hit. Furious, she glared viciously at Veraās closed door.
A door now stood between Vera Xavier and Cara Preston, but Vera could clearly see the expression on Caraās face. The corners of her lips curved up, and she raised an eyebrow before calmly tidying the books in her room, which had been rummaged through and left in a mess.
She searched all over her room but couldnāt find her schoolbag. She then remembered tossing it on the first floor the last time sheād left the house. She went downstairs to look for it, finally finding it in a corner behind the front door.
Fortunately, it hadnāt rained in the past few days, otherwise the books Nathaniel Nathan had given her would have been completely ruined.
