Chapter 107: Chapter 107: Brainwashing Her
Rona Langdon froze for a moment, and Cara Preston immediately started listing the benefits. "Mom, you know full well what kind of family the Nathans are. Even though Master Nathan is retired, he was once a pivotal figure in the country. The Nathan Family still holds real power and influence. If I marry into their family, all theyâd have to do is pull a few strings, and it would be incredibly easy for Maxwell to get a promotion."
The only person Rona Langdon truly doted on was her biological son, Maxwell Preston. But having been spoiled by her since childhood, Maxwell was no stranger to petty crimes and mischief.
By the time Zachary Preston discovered Maxwell was heading down the wrong path, it was too late to straighten him out. In a fit of rage, he sent Maxwell to a security company.
After enlisting, Maxwell was knocked into shape. He had improved tremendously and was now a squad leader. Rona Langdonâs goal was to help him transition from a conscript to a career soldier and then secure him a promotion to an officer rank.
Rona Langdonâs resolve began to waver. Cara Preston pressed her advantage, "If Maxwell gets that promotion, his future will be limitless. He could even marry a wife from an excellent family. Then heâd truly have the world at his feet, and you, Mom, would be able to live a life of comfort."
Rona Langdonâs eyes lit up at the thought of such a life. Cara continued, "And even though Iâm not your biological daughter, Mom, youâre the one who raised me. In my heart, youâre more of a mother to me than my own. Once I marry into the Nathan Family, Iâll be sure to take good care of you and let you enjoy endless riches and honor!"
Rona Langdon gave her a sidelong glance. "Donât think I donât know what your game is. All this talk... itâs just because youâve taken a fancy to Nathaniel Nathan, isnât it?"
Cara Preston didnât deny it. "Nathaniel Nathan is so exceptional, itâs only natural that Iâd like him. But Mom, have you considered something else? If Nathaniel Nathan marries Vera Xavier, do you think sheâll let you live a life of comfort? Do you think sheâll persuade the Nathan Family to help Maxwell get his promotion?"
Rona Langdonâs expression soured. She knew perfectly well how she had treated Vera Xavier. In the past, Veraâs soft nature had made her easy to control, but ever since she ran away from her wedding, her personality had changed drastically, and she was no longer so easy to handle.
Besides, the hostility Vera had shown her lately, the times Vera had plotted against her, and the cold, haunting look in Veraâs eyesâit all sent a chill down her spine.
She could just imagine it: if Vera had the Nathan Family backing her, she wouldnât give Rona the time of day.
She sat there, thinking it over carefully, before finally saying, "I can help you with this, but you have to remember what you promised me today."
Cara Preston immediately beamed with joy. She cuddled up to Rona Langdon and said, "Donât worry, Mom. As long as Iâm well off in the future, thereâs no way Iâll ever forget you."
And so, the mother and daughter began to discuss the finer details of their plan. To make Nathaniel Nathan fall for Cara, they would have to see each other more oftenâan opportunity that would have to be created.
Just as Vera Xavier was getting ready for bed, she saw Cara Preston return to her room. She raised an eyebrow slightly. âThey must have reached some kind of agreement.â
The next day, when it was time for school, Vera Xavier saw that Cara Preston was wearing a light purple dress with her hair in two small braids. Gone was her dejected, grimy appearance from the day before; her face was radiant and full of life. Most surprisingly, the moment she saw Vera, she flashed a sweet smile. "Sister, letâs walk to school together!"
