Chapter 124: Chapter 124: Give Him to Me
"Let her reflect on what sheās done!" Zachary Preston said coldly. "Sheās turned the house upside down recently. We canāt let her keep acting so recklessly."
After he finished, he looked at Vera Xavier and said, "Vera, your mother isnāt a bad person at heart. If she admits she was wrong, try not to hold it against her."
Vera Xavier nodded and said, "Okay, Iāll listen to you, Dad."
Zachary Preston had said things like this several times before. Every time Vera Xavier heard it, she sighed inwardly. āRona Langdon will never leave me alone.ā
Zachary Preston let out a long sigh and picked up a new pair of chopsticks, but the food had lost its flavor.
Vera Xavier twirled her chopsticks. āI have a plan,ā she thought. āSlowly wearing down Zachary Prestonās patience with Rona Langdon and making him see her true, materialistic nature is probably the best approach for now.ā
She glanced at Zachary Preston, who already looked rather old for his age. Her heart truly ached for him. He was only in his forties, but years of toil and stress made him look at least ten years older.
She placed a piece of food on his plate with her chopsticks. "Dad, you work so hard. Please eat more."
Zachary Preston smiled and nodded. āCara Preston seems so well-behaved and sensible,ā he thought, ābut sheās fundamentally selfish. During meals, she only ever thinks about getting the best bites for herself. Sheās never once served me any food.ā
He returned the gesture, placing some food on Vera Xavierās plate. "Your schoolwork is demanding right now. You should eat more, too."
After Cara Preston went upstairs, she heard the argument break out below. She listened closely. At first, she felt a flicker of glee, but when she heard Zachary Preston defending Vera Xavier, she grew furious.
āBefore Vera Xavier came back to the Preston family, I thought Zachary Preston treated me pretty well,ā she fumed. āBut ever since she returned, heās clearly taken her side.ā
Cara Preston took a deep breath, replaying the events in her mind. Her eyes filled with venom. āNo, this wonāt do. I have to find a way to win over Nathaniel Nathan! I wonāt let anyone who gets in my way off the hook!ā
Vera Xavier went upstairs only after helping Zachary Preston clear the table. The moment she reached the top of the stairs, she saw Cara Preston staring at her, her eyes as venomous as a viperās.
She asked Cara Preston, "Whatās wrong?"
Cara Prestonās eyes instantly filled with tears of grievance, as if her earlier venom had been a mere illusion. In a pitiful voice, she said, "Sister, Iām in love with Nathaniel Nathan. Please, help me!"
Vera Xavier hadnāt expected Cara Preston to be so blunt. She was taken aback for a moment, but it only took a second of thought for her to grasp the situation.
āIn her past life, Cara Preston had been utterly obsessed with Nathaniel Nathan. She had treated me like an idiot, running me in circles and using me to get closer to him. Nathaniel must have seen right through Caraās schemes from the start, which was why he was always so curt with her.ā
āBut in this life, I havenāt been rejecting Nathaniel, and heās been actively getting closer to me. Thatās why Cara canāt stand it anymore.ā
Vera Xavier refused her point-blank. "Cara, Iām sorry, but I like Nathaniel Nathan, too. I could give in to you on anything else, but not him. Matters of the heart are not something you can just hand over!"
Cara Preston could no longer suppress the malice in her eyes. It was on full display for Vera Xavier to see. "Youāve only known Nathaniel Nathan for a few days. What feelings could you possibly have for him?"
