"Let her reflect on what she’s done!" Zachary Preston said coldly. "She’s turned the house upside down recently. We can’t let her keep acting so recklessly."

After he finished, he looked at Vera Xavier and said, "Vera, your mother isn’t a bad person at heart. If she admits she was wrong, try not to hold it against her."

Vera Xavier nodded and said, "Okay, I’ll listen to you, Dad."

Zachary Preston had said things like this several times before. Every time Vera Xavier heard it, she sighed inwardly. ’Rona Langdon will never leave me alone.’

Zachary Preston let out a long sigh and picked up a new pair of chopsticks, but the food had lost its flavor.

Vera Xavier twirled her chopsticks. ’I have a plan,’ she thought. ’Slowly wearing down Zachary Preston’s patience with Rona Langdon and making him see her true, materialistic nature is probably the best approach for now.’

She glanced at Zachary Preston, who already looked rather old for his age. Her heart truly ached for him. He was only in his forties, but years of toil and stress made him look at least ten years older.

She placed a piece of food on his plate with her chopsticks. "Dad, you work so hard. Please eat more."

Zachary Preston smiled and nodded. ’Cara Preston seems so well-behaved and sensible,’ he thought, ’but she’s fundamentally selfish. During meals, she only ever thinks about getting the best bites for herself. She’s never once served me any food.’

He returned the gesture, placing some food on Vera Xavier’s plate. "Your schoolwork is demanding right now. You should eat more, too."

After Cara Preston went upstairs, she heard the argument break out below. She listened closely. At first, she felt a flicker of glee, but when she heard Zachary Preston defending Vera Xavier, she grew furious.

’Before Vera Xavier came back to the Preston family, I thought Zachary Preston treated me pretty well,’ she fumed. ’But ever since she returned, he’s clearly taken her side.’

Cara Preston took a deep breath, replaying the events in her mind. Her eyes filled with venom. ’No, this won’t do. I have to find a way to win over Nathaniel Nathan! I won’t let anyone who gets in my way off the hook!’

Vera Xavier went upstairs only after helping Zachary Preston clear the table. The moment she reached the top of the stairs, she saw Cara Preston staring at her, her eyes as venomous as a viper’s.

She asked Cara Preston, "What’s wrong?"

Cara Preston’s eyes instantly filled with tears of grievance, as if her earlier venom had been a mere illusion. In a pitiful voice, she said, "Sister, I’m in love with Nathaniel Nathan. Please, help me!"
