Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Wanting to Make Trouble
Rona Langdonâs temper flared. "That wretched Vera Xavier! Does she really think she can climb the social ladder and become a phoenix?"
"I think thatâs been her plan all along," Cara Preston said with a long sigh. "You know it, Mom. She has no respect for you. If she really manages to get into the Nathan familyâs good graces, thereâs no telling how sheâll try to get revenge on you."

"Absolutely not!" Rona Langdon slammed her hand on the table, startling her young niece and nephew who were about to ask for candy and toys.
She had switched Vera Xavier with her own biological daughter at birth so that her own child could live a good life, marry into a wealthy family, and she could, in the process, acquire a girl to raise as a future daughter-in-law. But she never imagined that the child she received had also been switched by mistake.
She knew perfectly well how she had treated Vera Xavier, but she remembered even more clearly how Vera had treated her!
To this day, she could still remember the viciousness in Vera Xavierâs eyes as she brandished a pair of scissors at her neck. If a person like that gained power and then found out Rona wasnât her real mother, she would surely kill her!
She immediately went back to her room, grabbed her purse, and headed out. Seeing this, a subtle smile played on Cara Prestonâs lips. She fell into step beside her, asking, "Mom, whatâs your plan for dealing with Vera Xavier when you get back?"
The question caught Rona Langdon off guard. She was seething with anger, her mind filled with crude ideas but no concrete details. She paused for a moment.
Cara Preston said quietly, "Dad is completely brainwashed by Vera Xavier right now, heâs always on her side. If you go back and try to stop her directly, youâll probably just make Dad angry. The costs would outweigh the benefits."
"Then what should I do? Just let Vera Xavier run wild?" Rona Langdon said irritably.
Cara Preston glanced at her. "Itâs actually quite simple," she said. "Vera Xavier was engaged to Wesley Kane, after all. And even though they broke it off, traditionally, thatâs almost as damaging as a divorce. On top of that, it seems the Kane family isnât too fond of her either. You are still Vera Xavierâs mother; you can make some decisions for her."
Rona Langdonâs eyes lit up when she heard this. She slapped her thigh. "Thatâs right! Why didnât I think of that!"
As long as they married Vera Xavier off, someone of Nathaniel Nathanâs status could never marry her. Master Nathan would never approve of them being together either!
After speaking, she suddenly thought of something and said to Cara Preston in a sinister tone, "Itâs fine that you know about Vera Xavierâs background, but you are absolutely not to tell anyone else. If you do, Iâll kick you out of the Preston family!"
This was Rona Langdonâs biggest secret, and she couldnât let anyone else find out.
Other than Rona Langdon, Cara Preston was the only person in the Preston family who knew that Vera Xavier was not Ronaâs biological daughter.
Cara Preston had found out because she had once overheard Rona Langdon secretly calling her biological daughter, Susan Caldwell. Zachary Preston and Vera Xavier werenât home that day. Cara had been shocked by what she heard, but Rona discovered her and threatened her to keep quiet.
It was precisely because she knew Vera Xavier wasnât Rona Langdonâs biological daughter that she felt bold enough to bully and plot against her, knowing Rona would surely take her side.
Cara Preston wasnât intimidated by Rona Langdonâs threat. She said softly, "Donât worry, Mom. Iâll take that secret to my grave. I wonât tell a soul. But... are you really not going to tell Dad?"
