Chapter 147: Chapter 147: Too Deeply Scheming
Master Nathan had rushed over today after receiving a call from Vera Xavier. Principal Gage was already in the office by then. It was less than a two-minute walk from the office to the school gate, yet the two hadnât shown up at the same time. Master Nathan knew exactly what that implied.
The Kane family was famously wealthy in Crestfall, and they had donated many of the high schoolâs facilities. Therefore, even if Principal Gage had wanted to defend Vera Xavier, he wouldnât have dared to offend the Kanes. The best strategy was to stay on the sidelines and watch the drama unfold.
But given who Master Nathan was, how could he possibly fail to see through the principalâs intentions?
Principal Gage sighed. "Itâs not easy being a principal these days. I have to worry about college admission rates, counsel the students, and manage so many other internal and external affairs. I truly mishandled this situation. Youâre right to criticize me, Master Nathan."
Master Nathan shot him a glare. "Donât play the victim with me. I know exactly what youâre up to. I couldnât care less about your usual shenanigans, but if you dare let my granddaughter-in-law be wronged in the slightest again, youâll have me to answer to!"
"Granddaughter-in-law?" Principal Gage was stunned. "Vera Xavier?"
"Who else could possibly be my granddaughter-in-law?" Master Nathan said irritably. "Or what, do you think Iâm so bored that I came all the way down here just for fun?"
Principal Gage said hastily, "Of course not. I was just... surprised."
He was reeling with shock. The Kane family might be wealthy, but compared to the Nathan family, the difference was night and day. He never would have imagined that Vera Xavier had not only saved Master Nathanâs life but also earned his approval.
He felt this was a major development and decided he had to check with Zachary Preston about it soon.
Master Nathan huffed. "Iâm entrusting my granddaughter-in-law to your care while sheâs in high school. If you dare let her be wronged in the slightest, Iâll have your hide."
Principal Gage hastily stammered his agreement.
The dayâs events had caused a huge stir. When Vera Xavier returned to her classroom, she was met with all kinds of stares from her classmates. The fact that she had previously been married to Wesley Kane had already become common knowledge at school, but that was nothing compared to the shock of seeing Master Nathan himself stand up for her.
Even if some students didnât initially know who Master Nathan was, others who were in the know quickly filled them in. As a result, the gazes directed at Vera Xavier grew even more complicated.
Vera Xavier had only been slightly notorious before. Now, just like that, her infamy had skyrocketed.
When Elise Langdon first heard from Cara Preston that Vera Xavier liked Nathaniel Nathan, she had been skeptical. But after seeing Master Nathan himself defend Vera, she was completely convinced.
In her head, she cursed Vera Xavier. âThat vixen! How dare she make a move on my Nathan? Iâll tear her to pieces! Sheâs so calculating, going after Mr. Nathan first. How despicable!â
After her tirade, she felt a pang of regret. âWhy didnât I think of starting with Master Nathan first?â
As Vera Xavierâs deskmate, Shane Caldwell felt even more conflicted. He glanced at Vera and finally voiced his question. "Did you really save Master Nathan?"
"Isnât that a little nosy of you, Class President?" Vera Xavier asked, raising an eyebrow. "If you have so much free time, you can go check the hospital records yourself."
"Thatâs not what I meant, I was just..." Shane Caldwell tried to explain, but Vera had already buried her head in her schoolwork. He could only press on, "You were with Master Nathan at the hospital for two days. Did you see Nathaniel Nathan?"
