Vera Xavier politely declined. "Mr. Nathan, you donāt have to worry. Iām not that helpless. I can handle something like this. Iām just really sorry to have troubled you to come all this way in person."
"Iām just an old man with nothing better to do at home anyway. Itās good to get out for a walk," Master Nathan said with a wide smile. "Besides, weāre family. When one of us is in trouble, how can we not help?"
He was back to being that mischievous yet lovable old man, completely lacking the formidable presence he had when he furiously confronted the Kane mother and son that morning.
Vera Xavier began with a soft laugh, "Mr. Nathan, Iām eighteen now. Iām an adult. My family situation might be a little complicated, but I can handle it. I donāt want my dad to worry about me. Also, this whole incident has blown up so much, it wouldnāt be right for me to stay at your home anymore. Iām truly grateful for your kindness, though."
āIf I move into the Nathan Familyās house now, everyone will probably say Iām trying to use this opportunity to latch onto them.ā
āMy relationship with Nathaniel is one of equals. I donāt want to move in under these circumstances. It wouldnāt be fair to me or to him.ā
Master Nathan looked at her. The young woman before him was poised and resolute, and the more he looked, the more he liked her. He smiled and nodded. "Alright, you can be the one to decide. If you run into any trouble, just give me a call. Even if you donāt move in with the Nathan Family, I wonāt let anyone bully you."
A warmth spread through Vera Xavierās heart. In her past life, sheād never interacted with Master Nathan. She truly never imagined he would be such a kind and endearing elder.
After Master Nathan drove Vera Xavier back to the residential compound, he returned home and called Nathaniel Nathan to give him a rundown of the dayās events.
He then started to praise Vera. "Kid, youāve got good taste. I wholeheartedly approve of the wife youāve picked. Itās just with what happened, Vera canāt stay with us for the time being. If you miss her, just give her a call at home. You have her number, after all."
Nathaniel Nathan was silent for a moment on the other end of the line. His gaze darkened slightly as he said softly, "Got it."
He hung up, but a storm was brewing inside him. āIāve only been gone a few days, and theyāre already bullying my woman. This isnāt over!ā
He had originally planned to let the Kane Family off the hook, but now heād changed his mind.
He dialed a number. "Aaron Cheney, I have a job for you..."
When Vera Xavier returned to the Preston residence, she could feel the tense atmosphere in the house. It didnāt take a genius to figure out why. A cold smile touched her lips. āRona Langdon and Cara Preston must be furious that their plan failed.ā
As she pushed the door open, she saw Cara Preston walking down the stairs, the red handprint on her cheek standing out in sharp relief. A faint smile played on Veraās lips, but Caraās expression was ghastly.
Vera Xavier said coolly, "Cara Preston, I wonāt forget what happened today. Iāll settle this score with you eventually."
Cara Preston couldnāt hide the hatred in her eyes, but she spoke through tears. "Sister, what happened today really had nothing to do with me! I never meant you any harm, I was just telling the truth. Please donāt be angry with me, okay?"
Vera Xavier had to hand it to Cara Preston. After screwing her over so viciously today, she still had the gall to say something like that to her face. āThis "white lotus" is truly in a league of her own when it comes to playing innocent.ā
