Chapter 153: Chapter 153: Ruined and Disgraced
Aaron Cheneyās companions didnāt hear his conversation with the deputy chief. Thinking the police were acting on his orders, they all looked at him with admiration. "Aaron, youāre the man!"
Aaron Cheney coughed lightly. "The man, my ass. This was all Young Master Nathanās arrangement!"
After speaking, he pressed his palms together in front of his chest. "Thank God I didnāt get impulsive and run in there to beat the crap out of Wesley Kane tonight. Otherwise, I wouldāve ruined Young Master Nathanās plans, and he would have skinned me alive!"
Earlier, Nathaniel Nathan had called and told him to keep a close eye on the Preston Familyās movements and make sure Vera Xavier didnāt get the short end of the stick. After hearing that Wesley Kane and Daisy Archer had gone to the school to cause trouble, he had gathered a few buddies to lie in wait at night and ambush Wesley Kane.
He now felt he couldnāt have been more brilliant. If Wesley Kane had come out a little earlier today, he probably would have ruined Nathaniel Nathanās plan.
While he was celebrating his good fortune, Wesley Kane was having a miserable time.
After being thoroughly intimidated by Master Nathan yesterday, Wesley Kane had been in a daze. Heād decided to come here to display his "manly prowess." Tonight, he had brought a familiar lover, planning to go a hundred rounds. But before they could finish their "battle," the police officers burst in.
Wesley Kane was so scared he went limp instantly. Seeing the flashing cameras, he threw his hands over his face. The lover beneath him screamed in terror.
But no matter how fast he covered his face, it was too late. Someone had already gotten a clear shot of his face.
If it had just been photographs, that would have been one thing. But a TV station crew was also there, capturing him clearly and completely on camera.
In Crestfall at that time, this sort of thing was an absolutely unprecedented, massive news story!
Heād been caught red-handed soliciting a prostitute. He had a taste for this sort of thing, but heād never been caught before. That, combined with the scare, meant that when the police officers hauled him away, he even forgot to put on his pants.
That scene, too, was captured in crystal clear detail.
Wesley Kane was taken to the police station overnight. The handling of such cases was always rather simple and crude: detention and a fine were both unavoidable.
However, none of this would be dealt with immediately. First, everyone needed to be investigated one by one.
And although South Street was *that* kind of place, it was extremely popular. A sudden police raid at night was, in essence, a major event. So, by the next morning, before the police had even implemented any penalties, the news had already spread throughout Crestfall.
On her way to school the next morning, Vera Xavier also overheard passersby discussing the matter. But she felt it had nothing to do with her, so she didnāt pay it much mind.
After arriving at school, she noticed many students giving her strange looks. She found it a bit baffling. Once she entered the classroom and sat down, Shane Caldwell glanced at her. "Vera Xavier, youāre so lucky you didnāt marry Wesley Kane."
Vera Xavier didnāt feel they had anything to discuss on the matter, so she replied casually, "Of course. He was never worthy of me."
"Yeah, heās a total scumbag," Shane Caldwell agreed.
Vera Xavier found this a little funny. āAre Shane Caldwell and I really close enough to be badmouthing people together?ā
So she ignored him, opened her schoolbag, and prepared to grind through some practice problems. Shane Caldwellās gaze deepened as he watched her. He recalled how Cara Preston and Wesley Kane had been giving her a hard time yesterday. Back then, because he had some doubts about her, he hadnāt really protected her. Thinking back on it now, he felt a pang of regret.
He turned his head and said to Vera Xavier, "Weāre deskmates. From now on, Iāll protect you."
