Chapter 160: Chapter 160: Her Gift
Zachary Preston and Rona Langdon were just coming downstairs when they saw Veraās state. Rona asked, "Whatās wrong? Why is your face so red? Did you do something you feel guilty about?"
Vera had no intention of explaining anything to her. She just said, "Can we leave for Grandpa and Grandmaās house now?"
Zachary Preston nodded. He was also a little curious seeing Veraās flushed face, but he didnāt ask.
Cara Preston shot her a sidelong glance and ground her teeth, but said nothing.
Her grandparentsā home was also in the countryside, not too far from Xavier Village where Vera had lived before moving back to the city. Only one village separated them.
Their arrival made her grandparents very happy. However, their expressions grew a little complicated when they saw Vera. In their eyes, although Vera was their granddaughter, they had never lived with her, so things always felt a bit awkward.
After coming inside, Vera obediently called out, "Hi, Grandpa! Hi, Grandma!"
Her grandparents smiled and nodded. Her grandmother asked her, "Vera, are you getting used to living in the city?"
Before Vera could answer, Cara Preston cut in with a smile, "The living conditions in the city are so much better than in the countryside. What could she possibly not be used to?"
Her grandmotherās gaze deepened. Cara Preston continued, "Grandma, you probably donāt know, but my sister is a big celebrity in the city now. She placed first in our class, and Wesley Kane, the guy whose engagement she broke off, is looking at her in a whole new light. He even ran to our school to try and win her back."
Her grandmotherās brow furrowed, and she looked at Vera with worry in her eyes. As an elder, she couldnāt help but lecture Vera a little. "Vera, I wasnāt very supportive when you said you wanted to marry Wesley Kane. Youāre young and donāt know any better. The Kane family might have some money, but they are by no means good people. Youād best not get involved with them again, or youāll be the one who gets hurt."

Cara Preston immediately tried to sow discord. "Grandma, how can you say that about my sister? After all, she was the one who chose Wesley Kane."
After speaking, she nudged Veraās shoulder and said, "Sister, Grandmaās words might have been a bit harsh, but she means well. You mustnāt get angry with her. Itās one thing to cause a ruckus at home, but donāt stir up more trouble here and make Grandma worry."
The grandmotherās expression soured when she heard this. Although she was an uneducated old woman, she was shrewd.
Hearing Caraās words, she immediately thought Vera was an immature troublemaker. After all, the impression Cara had left on her was that of a sweet and sensible girl, so she didnāt doubt Caraās words.
Vera ignored Cara Preston and looked at her grandmother. "Grandma, Iāll listen to you! Iām going to focus on my studies from now on and not get married so early. And donāt listen to Caraās nonsense. Iāve already cut all ties with the Kane family, completely. If you donāt believe me, you can ask my dad!"
With that, she took a small radio out of her backpack and placed it in her grandmotherās hands. "I bought this with the pocket money I saved up. When you and Grandpa have some free time, you can use this to listen to operas."
The radio wasnāt large, nor was it too expensiveāaround two hundred yuan.
In her past life, she had heard her grandparents say they wanted a radio. But the two had been frugal their entire lives and couldnāt bear to buy one. And in that life, she hadnāt been on good terms with them. She could barely take care of herself right up until they passed away, so it was impossible for her to buy one for them.
