Chapter 196: Chapter 196: Dark Night Crisis
So, Vera winked at Master Nathan and said, "Alright, we wonât give them any!"
The old man and the young woman looked at each other, then burst out laughing.
Vera liked Master Nathanâs personality. He always made her feel the warmth of an elder.
After they finished laughing, Master Nathan said, "Itâs a shame that scoundrel Nathaniel isnât home, or you two could get to know each other."
Vera recalled seeing Nathaniel Nathan that very morning, yet Master Nathan was saying he wasnât home. âIt seems he hasnât even told Master Nathan that heâs back.â She gave a soft smile and didnât elaborate.
Master Nathan wanted to play chess with her, but she got a headache just thinking about his poor sportsmanship. They would agree not to take back any moves, but by the end of the game, heâd always find some bizarre excuse to do so, like, "I misread the board!" "Thatâs not where I meant to put it!" "My eyes are getting blurry, I couldnât see the squares!"
Faced with this side of Master Nathan, all Vera could do was endure it!
By the time she had finally cheered the old man up enough for him to let her go home, it was already dark. Master Nathan offered to have his driver take her, but she never had the habit of troubling others.
Besides, she had channeled the frustration from his constant cheating at chess into her appetite and eaten quite a lot. Her stomach was stuffed, so she decided to walk back to help digest her food.
Master Nathan didnât insist. As she was leaving, however, he stuffed her bag with all sorts of expensive, imported snacks. She had the distinct feeling of a grandfather seeing off his little granddaughter. Carrying the big bag of snacks, she started on her way home.
The moment she left the Nathan Familyâs small building, she sensed she was being followed. Her eyes narrowed slightly. As she passed a street corner, she took out a small mirror to check and, sure enough, saw several punks with wild, bleached-blond hair tailing her.
The path from the Nathan Familyâs estate to the Preston Familyâs required passing through a secluded alley. That particular alley had the highest crime rate in all of Crestfall, with numerous robberies and assaults happening there every year.
Vera knew at a glance that the punks had been hired by someone; they wouldnât have the guts otherwise. Since her rebirth, she had made more than a few enemies, so she couldnât immediately figure out who was behind this.
But regardless of who it was, she would have to face this tonight.
A cold glint appeared in her eyes. Pretending she hadnât noticed the punks tailing her, she walked forward nonchalantly. On the side of the road lay a discarded steel pipe. It wasnât longâonly about a footâbut for her, it was better than nothing.
She picked it up discreetly and walked into the alley at a steady pace.
Other punks were already lying in ambush at the alleyâs entrance. When the group tailing Vera caught up, they found she had vanished. As they looked around in surprise, a hand clapped down on the leaderâs shoulder, followed by a backhanded slap to his face. He froze, stunned.
Vera leaped down from the top of a wall. "Hi, looking for me?"
The other punks stared for a second before she swung the steel pipe, cracking it against another oneâs head. "Sorry to keep you waiting."
The scent of blood is the quickest way to awaken oneâs primal instincts, stirring up the violence and madness deep within. The leader reached up to touch his head and brought his hand back covered in blood. He instantly flew into a rage. "Fuck! You bitch, you dare hit me! Iâm going to cripple you today!"
"Damn it, sheâs got some nerve! A fucking bitch dares to fight back! Before I break your arms and legs, Iâm gonna have my way with you!"
"Yeah! I heard this broad is still a virgin. Letâs all get a taste later!"
