Chapter 205: Chapter 205: Deliberately Angering You
After speaking, Cara Preston shot Rona Langdon a look. From their last few clashes, sheâd already realized Vera Xavier was a completely different person nowâcunning and resourceful. The situation tonight was still unclear, so it was best not to reveal their hand too early. Most importantly, this ensured they wouldnât be implicated if anything went wrong.
On top of that, Vera Xavier had gotten the upper hand on her today, and she was so bitter about it she couldnât even be bothered to keep up her act.
Vera Xavier had initially thought tonightâs events were solely Wesley Kaneâs doing. But now, seeing the mother-daughter duoâs behavior, something seemed off. Her cold gaze swept over Rona Langdon and Cara Preston before she smiled faintly. "Iâm not you. Iâm not that shameless."
Tears welled in Cara Prestonâs eyes. "Sister, how could you say that about me!"
Rona Langdon immediately flew into a rage. "Vera Xavier, apologize to Cara!"
The corners of Vera Xavierâs lips curled up slightly. "I didnât say anything wrong, so why should I apologize? Or is her skin not thick enough?"
Cara Preston looked deeply wronged. "Sister, Iâve always been so good to you, and you..."
"Thatâs enough." Vera Xavier cut her off. "I know youâre good at playing the innocent victim, but Iâm not buying it. And frankly, your constant double standards are disgusting."
With that, she shouldered her backpack and started to head upstairs. A stream of curses spewed from Rona Langdonâs mouth. "A girl like you, coming home this late! Bullying your own sister the second you walk in the door! Who knows what tramp you were running around with! Youâre going to completely ruin the Preston familyâs reputation!"
Vera Xavier couldnât be bothered to deal with the pair, but their words were truly vileânothing but personal attacks. âIf the neighbors heard and the gossip spread, it would be terrible for my reputation.â So, she stopped in her tracks, slid her backpack off her shoulder, and pulled out a large pile of imported snacks, dangling them in front of them.
Cara Preston and Rona Langdon froze. They knew their luxury goods, and they recognized that most of the snacks were things you couldnât get even if you had the money. The two of them gulped pathetically.
Vera Xavier slowly and deliberately put the snacks back in her bag. "Mr. Nathan had me stay and play chess with him until just now. He thinks my skills are pretty good, so he gave me these snacks as a reward. I wonât be sharing them with you!"
With that said, she zipped her bag shut and went straight upstairs.
This display sent Rona Langdon into a fit of rage. She immediately started screaming obscenities from downstairs, spewing filth too vile to repeat.
Vera didnât get angry. Instead, she said to Cara Preston, "Be careful Mom doesnât ruin her throat, screaming like that. She dotes on you the most, and youâre the most devoted daughter, so why donât you run to the pharmacy down the street and buy her a box of throat lozenges?"
Hearing this, Rona Langdon was practically hopping with fury, wishing she could charge upstairs and beat Vera Xavier to a pulp. Vera, however, remained perfectly composed, casually toying with the fruit knife in her hand.
Rona Langdon immediately recalled the ferocity with which Vera had taken a pair of scissors to that dress. The memory made her lose her nerve. No matter how viciously she cursed, she didnât dare charge up there to hit Vera.
Cara Preston was also furious with Vera. In her eyes, Vera pulling out that huge bag of snacks was a blatant act of provocation and showing off. In all of Crestfall, very few families besides the Nathans could get their hands on such things, which just went to show how much Master Nathan favored Vera.
Cara Preston was seething with rage!
Rona Langdon was fuming, too. When did Vera Xavier get so sharp-tongued? âSheâs just so infuriating!â
