Chapter 222: Chapter 222: Picking Up My Wife
The owner of the breakfast shop confirmed that Jack Judd and Cara Preston were a couple; otherwise, Jack wouldnât have paid for her breakfast. It just looked like they were in the middle of a fight.
An officer at the station happened to be a distant relative of the Preston Family. He had recognized Cara Preston right away, and after hearing what the incident was about, he told the chief what he knew about the familyâs affairs.
The chief now had a clear picture. He felt nothing but utter contempt for Cara Preston. âThis girl looks so delicate and frail, but her heart is unusually vicious. She must bully Vera Xavier constantly at home.â
However, this was a private family matter, so he couldnât get involved. He just needed to confirm one other thing. "Jack Judd, do you know these two?"
Jack Judd was a sly old fox; one look at the chiefâs expression and he knew what was what. Remembering the task Vera Xavier had given him, he decided to go all out. He pointed at Vera Xavier and said, "I donât know her."
Then he pointed at Cara Preston and said, "Sheâs my girlfriend, Cara Preston."
Cara Preston flew into a rage. "What are you talking about? Whoâs your girlfriend?!"
The chief slammed his hand on the table. "Young people these days! If youâre going to have a loversâ quarrel, do it at home! Whatâs this, causing a scene at a police station? Have you no sense of decency?!"
He pointed at Cara Preston and Jack Judd. "Each of you will write a one-thousand-word statement of apology. Donât even think about leaving this station until youâre finished!"
He then turned to Vera Xavier and said gently, "Youâre free to go."
Vera Xavier nodded. Cara Preston wanted to protest that it was unfair but didnât dare cause another scene. She could only glare at Vera with a venomous, snake-like gaze, to which Vera responded with a disdainful smile.
Just then, an officer ran out. "Chief, Young Master Nathan is here."
The chief froze for a second. He told the officer to supervise Cara Preston and Jack Judd as they wrote their statements. Just as he was about to head out, Nathaniel Nathan walked in.
Tall and elegant, his features were so handsome it was almost unreal. Simply by standing in the humble police station, he became a sight to behold.
The chief looked at him and asked with a smile, "Nathaniel, what brings you here?"
"Hello, Uncle Jacobs," Nathaniel said slowly. "Iâm here to pick up my girlfriend."
He hadnât even finished speaking when Cara Preston stood up, her face flushing, and asked, "Nathaniel, are you here for me?"
Her eyes were filled with hope, and with the corners of her eyes turning red, she looked utterly pitifulâa sight that would stir a bit of compassion in anyone.
But Nathaniel didnât even spare her a glance. He beckoned directly to Vera. "Vera, come here!"
Cara Prestonâs face instantly turned beet red, and she looked as if she were about to cry again. Beside her, Jack Judd let out a wicked chuckle. "Honey, you might be as pretty as a picture, but you canât go around claiming just anyone as your man. How could someone like you ever catch the eye of Young Master Nathan? Youâd be better off just settling for being my wife!"
Vera Xavier hadnât expected Nathaniel to show up, so she could only walk meekly to his side. He said calmly, "Vera, this is Uncle Jacobs. Heâs a veteran officer, both fair and capable, and he was an old classmate of my fatherâs."
The chief grinned from ear to ear upon hearing Nathanielâs words. "You kidder," he laughed, "since when did you get such a silver tongue?"
Nathaniel offered a faint smile, while Vera said dutifully, "Hello, Uncle Jacobs!"
The chief laughed heartily. Heâd felt from the beginning that there was something different about Vera Xavier, and now he finally understood what it was. âCould any girl who catches Nathanielâs eye be anything less than extraordinary?â
He chuckled and said, "Excellent, excellent! This is wonderful news! I canât believe you, you rascal, went and found yourself a girlfriend without saying a word!"
