Chapter 230: Chapter 230: An Explosion of Luck
"Itâs either yes or no. What do you mean by âsort ofâ?" Nathaniel Nathan said, sounding a little displeased.
Vera Xavier saw his slightly furrowed brow and decided it was best to soothe him. She said seriously, "Iâve never been in a real relationship beforeâwhat I had with Wesley Kane doesnât count. So I donât really know what jealousy feels like. Thatâs why I can only say âsort ofâ for now. When I understand it better and am more certain of my feelings, Iâll tell you."
Nathaniel Nathanâs gaze deepened as he looked at her. He reached out, gently tapped her nose, and said, "Such clever excuses."
Vera Xavier gave him a sweet smile, and Nathaniel Nathan froze for a moment at the sight.
Her smile was so radiant and lovely it seemed to brighten the humble room. The chill around him dissipated, and he gently reached out to touch her face.
But just as his hand reached for her, she seemed to remember something. She turned and lifted the mattress, causing his hand to miss. When he turned his head, he saw her pulling a large stone from under the bed. "Can you help me find a place to get this cut? I want to see if thereâs any jade inside. If there is, you can help me sell it, too."
âShe hadnât figured out how to tell him that sheâd been reborn with X-ray vision, so for now, sheâd just keep it to herself.â
âAfter what happened at that little shop last time, she knew that if she went alone and the stone revealed Emperor Green jade, it would attract a lot of unnecessary trouble. But it would be different if he handled it; no one would dare to cheat him.â
âBesides, with his resources, he could get a much better price.â
Nathaniel Nathan frowned at the stone. "Is this uncut jade?"
He had some experience with the world of jade gambling, so he recognized it as an uncut stone at a glance. He could also tell that its quality was quite poor; the chances of it actually containing jade were extremely slim.
Vera Xavier nodded. Nathaniel Nathan immediately recalled the seal she had given Master Nathan. His grandfather had been showing it off smugly ever since he got back. He asked her, "Youâre into jade gambling?"
Vera Xavier met his gaze and felt an inexplicable flutter of panic. She quickly shook her head. "Not really. I just bought a couple of stones at random. Since the last one turned out to be Full House Red, I thought Iâd try my luck with this one, too."
"You just got lucky," Nathaniel Nathan said calmly. "Plenty of people spend a fortune on a pile of uncut stones and donât even find a tiny piece of Full House Red. So, donât get your hopes up for this one."
He was being blunt. He knew a thing or two about jade gamblingâit was an industry with high returns but even higher risks. The fact that sheâd already found a piece of Full House Red meant her luck had been extraordinary. This stone was probably just... a stone.
Vera Xavier said half-jokingly, "What if I get super lucky again and it turns out to be Emperor Green?"
Nathaniel Nathan chuckled. "You think jade gambling is like buying papayas from a street vendor? That you can just pick one that looks ripe and itâll be perfect inside?"
Lately, thanks to him, whenever Vera Xavier heard the word "papaya," she subconsciously glanced down at her own chest. By the time she realized how foolish the gesture was, she could already hear his teasing laughter beside her.
Mortified and annoyed, she said deliberately, "Well, I just have a feeling this stone has Emperor Green in it. If it doesnât, youâll have to buy me a piece to make up for it!"
âIt might have sounded unreasonable, but after finding the Full House Red, she was very confident in her X-ray vision. She was mostly just saying it offhandedly to save a little face.â
To her surprise, he replied calmly, "Okay."
