Chapter 272: Chapter 272: Fainted from Anger
"Tell me, do you think thereâs a type of heart condition in this world that only flares up when someoneâs being scolded, but never when theyâre bullying others?"
When Cara Preston heard Grandma Dixon and a few other old ladies chatting downstairs, she was so furious she smashed a porcelain cup. âTheyâre really taking this too far!â
When Rona Langdon heard that Cara had been caught cheating and disqualified from the exam, she was so enraged she pointed a finger in Cara Prestonâs face and screamed, "You worthless girl! Youâve brought nothing but shame to the Preston family!"
Cara Preston sobbed, "Itâs all Vera Xavierâs fault! She framed me on purpose!"
Zachary Preston, who had never so much as raised his voice at Cara Preston, finally lost his patience. He slammed his hand on the table. "Shut up!"
Zachary Preston was a man of integrity. He had gone to the school earlier that day to ask the teacher about Caraâs cheating. The teacher, still fuming, had recounted everything Cara had done, concluding with, "You really need to discipline that daughter of yours, or sheâll think she can get away with anything!"
Tears streamed down Cara Prestonâs face, but she retorted, "Dad, search your heart and tell me you havenât been playing favorites since Vera Xavier came home! I always believed that the bond of raising a child is stronger than blood, which is why I chose to stay with the Preston family and be a good daughter to you. But how could you treat me like this!"
Zachary Preston was so furious he could feel a sharp pain in his side. He pointed a trembling finger at Cara Preston. "What did you just say?"
Cara Preston knew that after what happened today, her future was all but ruined.
So she threw caution to the wind, dropping the act. She tearfully accused Zachary Preston, "Am I wrong? Ever since Vera Xavier came back, all the best food goes to her! The nicest clothes are for her! And whenever we have a problem, you always, always take her side!"
Zachary Preston stared at Cara Preston, utterly shocked. She went on, "Youâre so cruel! You only treat Vera Xavier well because sheâs your biological daughter, and you treat me poorly because Iâm not related to you by blood. But Iâm the one who grew up with you! How could you do this to me!"
"Youâre not just cruel, youâre selfish! All these years, youâve only cared about your own reputation, never about this family! Every time someone praises you for being so honest and upstanding, youâre just beaming with pride, while you let your own family live in poverty! You used to spend your salary on clothes and food for me, but ever since Vera Xavier came back, you give all your money to her!"
"And donât think I donât know! All that nice food and clothing sent to Vera Xavier last time... that wasnât from her cousin. You bought it all! I called the Xavier family to ask. They donât have any relatives in Vardenburg!"
"Vera Xavier was the reason I got thrown in a detention center, and you didnât lift a finger! You let me get locked up for a whole day, and for what? You clearly have the connections to help, but you refused to use them. What kind of a father are you?!"
Zachary Preston listened to Caraâs accusations, dumbfounded. He never imagined that the sweet, sensible girl he had raised could harbor such a dark and twisted heart.
Rona Langdon chimed in to back her up. "Zachary, I have to say it, you spoil Vera far too much! And you neglect this family! In our entire residential compound, is there any powerful family that isnât taking advantage of their position? Only you, stubbornly clinging to your so-called principles, making us eat and dress worse than everyone else! How can you be so selfish! How could you treat your daughter and me like this?"
Zachary Preston was so enraged by the mother-daughter pair that his chest heaved violently. He was a quiet man, not one for arguments. Overwhelmed by their accusations, he gasped for breath, his vision went black, and he collapsed heavily to the ground.
