Chapter 287: Chapter 287: Making Another Score
Rona Langdon reluctantly opened the door and said, "Preston isnât home."
"Thatâs alright. Itâs just as well that youâre here," the middle-aged man said with a broad grin. "Iâll just say a few words and be on my way."
As the saying goes, you donât turn away someone with a smile. Even though Rona Langdon was in a foul mood, she couldnât bring herself to send him away when faced with his grinning face.
She gave a slight nod, and the middle-aged man stepped inside, closing the door behind him.
Rona Langdonâs brow furrowed, but he had already begun unhurriedly opening the fruit box. She glanced over, and with just one look, her eyes were glued to it. The box didnât contain any fruitâit was filled entirely with hundred-yuan bills!
Rona Langdon stared at the middle-aged man in shock, her heart racing. Her voice trembled slightly. "What is the meaning of this?"
The middle-aged man maintained his amiable smile. "This is just a small token of my sincerity. Iâd like to ask Director Preston for a small favor. Once itâs taken care of, there will be an even greater reward!"
He had noted the change in Rona Langdonâs expression the moment she saw the money. An expert opportunist like him had spotted the greed in her eyes at first glance. He wasnât afraid of her greedâhe was afraid she wouldnât be greedy enough.
Rona Langdon swallowed hard. A part of her desperately wanted to take the money, but then she remembered that Zachary Preston had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. Even if he recovered, he could never stay in his position. If she accepted the money but couldnât get the job done, it would spell big trouble down the line.
So, she decided she had to grit her teeth and refuse. But just then, a thought flashed through her mind. âZachary Preston is already in this state... Besides, Cara Preston and I were the ones who angered him into this condition. I donât want to take care of him, and Iâm definitely going to divorce him!â
âSince weâre going to get divorced anyway, why canât I score a big payday before it happens?â
The moment the idea entered her mind, it grew like a weed, instantly taking over her every thought.
She thought about the other women in the compound, living the high life in their fine clothes, while she always fell short in comparison. For so many years with Zachary Preston, sheâd basically never had a comfortable life. âWhy not make a big score before divorcing him?â
A faint smile appeared on her face. "Oh, I couldnât possibly..."
Even as she said it, she was already taking the box of money from his hands.
The middle-aged man smiled. "Itâs nothing, really. Just please put in a good word for me with Director Preston."
Now that her mind was made up, Rona Langdonâs face bloomed into a smile. However, she had a cut on her face, and the movement pulled at the wound, making her wince. "Of course," she said through a grimace.
The middle-aged man left his name and contact information, then departed.
The moment he was gone, Rona Langdon hugged the box of money, beaming with joy. She had been worried about what she would do for money after divorcing the now-ill Zachary Preston. âBut with this much cash, I wonât have to worry for the rest of my life!â
âPlus, Susan Caldwell will still give me a little money from time to time. Iâm a genius!â she thought, suddenly feeling incredibly clever.
After leaving the compound, the middle-aged man took a car to a private room in a Crestfall clubhouse. Jeremy Kane was already waiting inside. When the man entered, Jeremy Kane asked, "Is it done?"
"With me on the case, is there anything that canât be done?" The fawning smile was gone from the middle-aged manâs face. With his smile vanished, he exuded an aura of cunning treachery; one look was all it took to know he was not a good man.
