Chapter 314: Chapter 314: Mysterious First Love
In an instant, the two groups started fighting again. Vera Xavierâs goal had been achieved, so she quickly pulled the clerk from the Civil Affairs Bureau out of the police station. The shouting today had already made her ears ache. âLet the thugs deal with those scumbags from the Langdon Family!â
The clerk from the Civil Affairs Bureau looked quite upset when she came out.
Vera Xavier saw her expression and understood the situation. Just then, someone happened to pass by on the roadside, carrying a basket of eggs.
She bought the entire basket of eggs and handed it to the clerk. "Maâam," she said, "Iâm so sorry my parentsâ affairs have caused you so much trouble today, and that you even got hit because of it. Iâm truly sorry. Please take these eggs as an apology on their behalf. You must accept them."
The clerkâs expression immediately softened. "Youâre such a smart and sensible child. With your father in his current state and your mother being so unreliable... it must be so hard on you!"
Vera Xavier just smiled and urged her to take the eggs. After a few polite refusals, the clerk accepted them.
In the early 1990s, average wages were not high, and eggs were still considered a fine gift. A basket of eggs like this was certainly a presentable gift.
As it happened, the clerkâs home was nearby. After Vera Xavier helped her carry the eggs home, she followed the clerk back to the Civil Affairs Bureau.
The divorce agreement had both fingerprints and signatures, so the clerk readily issued the divorce certificate for Rona Langdon and Zachary Preston.
Staring at their divorce certificates, Vera Xavier breathed a sigh of relief. The matter was finally settled. From now on, Zachary Preston would no longer have to suffer from Rona Langdonâs toxic influence.
With this divorce certificate, any future plans she had to deal with Rona Langdon now seemed all the more legitimate.
The corners of her mouth lifted slightly. She took a deep breath, and as she turned her head, she was surprised to see a rainbow in the sky. Its brilliant colors stretched across the azure heavens, lifting her spirits.
A small smile touched Vera Xavierâs lips, and she realized she was thinking of Nathaniel Nathan. It was the kind of beautiful scenery she wished she could share with him.
Unfortunately, cell phones werenât yet common in this era. Otherwise, she really would have wanted to call Nathaniel Nathan and tell him how beautiful todayâs rainbow was.
She leaned against the railing of a small bridge, letting the gentle breeze lift her hair.
Not far away, Shane Caldwell gazed at her, entranced. He had been paying extra attention to the Preston Familyâs affairs lately because of Vera Xavier. However, they had been in different exam halls during the college entrance exams, so he had only learned today what had happened.
He took a deep breath, wanting to go and comfort her, but he felt that even though they were deskmates, they werenât close enough to share such private matters.
His gaze dimmed. He thought about turning to leave but couldnât bring himself to. In the end, he bought a bottle of water from a nearby stall, walked over, and offered it to her. "Here."
Vera Xavier was a little surprised to see him. She didnât take the water he offered, asking instead, "Are you here to see the rainbow, too?"
Shane Caldwell froze for a moment. In truth, he hadnât noticed the rainbow at all. But when he followed her gaze, he saw it in the sky, and so he gave a slight nod.
Vera Xavier gave a big stretch and said with a smile, "Iâm done looking, so you can take your time! This is the best spot for watching the rainbow. Iâll leave it to you. No need to thank me; weâre classmates, after all."
With that, she turned and walked away. Her high ponytail traced a brilliant arc through the air, an arc that seemed to become a hook and snag his heart.
She radiated the beautiful energy of youth.
