Chapter 318: Chapter 318: Old Ginger is Spicier
Over the past few days, Grandma had seen that although Vera Xavier was young, she was mature and astute in how she handled matters. Grandma felt very confident letting her take charge.
Besides, Grandpa and Grandma were getting old and couldnāt find a suitable buyer themselves. After discussing it, the two decided to entrust this matter to her.
Vera Xavier was startled. An authentic work by Mr. Vincent Seymour was already a collectorās darling in this era, worth a considerable sum. She never imagined her grandparents would actually possess one of his genuine pieces!
Grandma noticed her confusion and explained, "Our Preston family was originally a well-known scholarly family in Crestfall. During The Pure Dynasty, one of our ancestors even served as an official, and his rank was quite high. Most of these calligraphy scrolls and paintings were passed down from that time. Itās just that over the many years, some have been damaged, so there arenāt many perfectly preserved pieces left. Before the home raids, your grandfather sensed the danger and hid all these things, which is how they survived."
Vera Xavier initially wanted to persuade her grandmother not to sell Vincent Seymourās calligraphy. In another ten or twenty years, his work could fetch an astronomical price. However, she then thought about the four hundred thousand yuan and realized that using this piece of calligraphy as a cover story was the perfect solution.
She gave a slight nod. "Alright. When I start making money in the future, Iāll find a way to buy it back."
Hearing this, Grandmaās face filled with relief. She sighed and said, "Child, donāt work yourself too hard. Buy it back if you can, but itās alright if you canāt. To me, as long as our family is safe and sound, thatās better than anything. Money and possessions are just worldly things."
Vera Xavier instantly understood where Zachary Preston got his fine character from.
Grandma looked at her and added, "Iāve also heard that your grades are excellent. If thereās any money left over, use it for your tuition. If itās still not enough, just tell me. We still have several other scrolls and paintings at home. We can sell them to pay for your education."
Over the past few days, Grandma had been observing Vera Xavier and found her to be a truly wonderful girlāsmart and kind. Even though she hadnāt grown up by Zachary Prestonās side, she was genuinely devoted to him.
A devoted child canāt have a bad character!
Those scrolls and paintings were family heirlooms. In her grandparentsā minds, selling off ancestral property was something only a prodigal would do. But with such a major crisis at home, with their son so ill he couldnāt even move, how could they bear to watch their devoted granddaughter drop out of school for his sake?
So, after a quick discussion, the old couple immediately picked out one of the pieces to sell.
Vera Xavier was deeply moved. She said softly, "Grandma, selling this one piece will be enough. Iāll earn my own money for school from now on. Iām already eighteen; I can support myself."
Grandma smiled and said, "Youāre leagues better than that lazy, good-for-nothing mother-daughter pair."
Vera Xavier smiled too, then remembered something and asked, "How did Rona Langdon end up stealing a fake painting last time she came back to the old house?"
Grandma gave a mysterious smile. "That was your grandfatherās idea. He was worried the real paintings would attract thieves, so he spent a little money on some fakes to put out as a decoy. Itās a classic case of misdirectionāmixing the fake with the real."
Vera Xavier couldnāt help but laugh when she heard that. She gave her grandmother a thumbs-up. "Thereās no substitute for experience!"
Grandma reached out and affectionately tapped her on the nose. "You silly girl!"
Aaron Cheney brought Vera Xavier a letter from Nathaniel Nathan. As usual, the two words "Love Letter" were written on the envelope, scrawled large and bold for all to see!
Every day, Vera Xavierās face burned with embarrassment whenever she received a letter and saw those two words.
