"It’s not that she won’t take it. I see it now—her real goal is Chloe. With Archer the Butcher’s temper, always ready to start a fight, of course he can’t find a wife. So now he’s set his sights on Chloe."

"It’s a disgrace! How old is Chloe? For him to have designs on her... he’s a cradle robber!"

"Thank goodness Vera came back and paid the debt. Let’s see what else they can pull now!"

Vera Xavier looked at the middle-aged woman and said, "Ma’am, come and sign this receipt."

The middle-aged woman stood there, stunned. Vera continued, "Drew, Chloe, listen carefully. If this old hag ever comes to our house causing trouble again, saying awful things, or bullying Mom and Dad, you go right ahead and hit her. I’ll take full responsibility for whatever happens!"

Drew and Chloe had been forced to put up with the woman for a long time. Upon hearing Vera’s words, they roared in agreement and lunged forward aggressively, looking like they were about to hit her.

Seeing she was at a complete disadvantage, the middle-aged woman knew she wouldn’t get anything more today. She pointed a finger at Vera and spat, "You just wait!"

"Fine. I’ll be waiting," Vera said, her tone flat. "By the way, I might as well inform you of something. In the city, I live in the government residential compound. I also happen to know a few people over at the Public Security Bureau. They were just saying how they’re cracking down on local tyrants—people who run roughshod over the countryside, preying on the weak while cowering before the strong.
