Chapter 770: Chapter 752: I Am Not a Slut 63
The men at the table ran out of liquor, Uncle Jiang called Aunt Jiang to fetch some, and she got up to go indoors.
Third Aunt quickly followed after her: "Iâll go take a look too, canât let them drink too much."
Once inside, Third Aunt tugged at Aunt Jiang: "Elder Sister-in-Law, do you believe those things Pingping said?"
Aunt Jiang chuckled: "Sheâs just bragging. Would a truly wealthy family want someone with Ningningâs looks? What mother-in-law likes a daughter-in-law who looks like a demon? The daughters-in-law that wealthy families take must have respectable appearances, looking stable and reliable. Even in ancient times during the selection of imperial consorts, they would choose the kind and virtuous types."
Third Aunt nodded vehemently: "Anning doesnât even look like a decent woman, anyway, our family definitely wonât choose someone like her as a daughter-in-law."
Aunt Jiang snorted coldly: "God knows she might end up finding a son-in-law whoâs both old and poor. Pingping would be ashamed of it, so sheâs puffing us up. Didnât she say the two families were going to meet during the first lunar month? Letâs ask about the time later, weâll go too. I want to see what kind of catch she can really make."
Third Aunt was also energized: "Iâll ask later, Iâll go take a look too. A man whoâs doing a Ph.D. in medical sciences, he could well be over thirty, and you never know how old he might look."
The two exchanged a smile, and Aunt Jiang brought out a bottle of liquor.
When they sat back down at the table, Third Aunt asked Mrs. Jiang: "Second Sister-in-Law, when is Ningningâs beauâs family coming over? Our family isnât without its members, so weâd like to go have a look too, to support our Ningning."
Mrs. Jiang smiled: "They said itâll be during the first lunar month, but the date isnât set yet. Weâre waiting to see when the in-laws can make it."
"Thatâs it, you have to let us know once youâve set the date, you know. Haiyang just bought a car; he can drive us over, it wonât take too much time."
Third Aunt reminded her again.
Mrs. Jiang nodded: "Weâll definitely tell you, weâll need your help keeping things in check then."
Aunt Jiang turned around and asked An Nan: "Nannan, do you have a partner yet?"
An Nan pursed her lips and smiled: "Yes, once the second eldestâs in-laws have visited, weâll need to meet with the parents on our side too."
"Thatâs great news."
Aunt Jiang said with a fake smile.
Anna asked: "What does the eldest brother-in-law do?"
An Nan didnât boast: "His family used to be butchers."
Aunt Jiangâs mouth corners drooped downward.
"Butchering pigs isnât bad. At least there wonât be shortage of meat in the future."
Third Auntâs laugh was full of implication.
"Thatâs for sure, there wonât be a shortage."
Mrs. Jiang joined in the laughter: "Before the New Year, the eldest brought us a lot of meat, and also home-made sausages and such. Our house definitely wonât lack these in the future."
An Ping then said: "Right, we brought some sausages over. Aunt Jiang, you should try them when you have guests next time. They taste really good, no coloring or additives; feels safe to eat."
"Good, Iâll prepare some for your uncleâs visit tomorrow."
Auntie Jiang quickly joined the conversation and asked An Nan, "Which village is his family from? Howâs their financial situation?"
An Nan honestly replied, "His family was originally from the suburbs, but when N City expanded, their area was demolished. They used to have a huge house because of their pig-slaughtering business, with several hundred square meters. They also owned some land, which got compensated for when the demolition happened. Now, they have two buildings in N City, one residential and one office building, both of which are rented out. Apart from those, they have more than ten storefronts, and also..."
Auntie Jiang and the third aunt froze there again.
Mrs. Jiang couldnât be happier: "Why bother talking about his family? We donât care about his background. As long as the kids are happy, weâre happy too. Come on, everyone, have another drink. If weâre here for anything, itâs for everyone to have a joyous year."
Mrs. Jiang certainly was over the moon.
But Auntie Jiang and the third aunt couldnât find it in themselves to be happy.
Mrs. Jiang deliberately teased Grandma Jiang.
She leaned over to Grandma Jiang and flaunted her new clothes: "Mom, look at my new clothes. This sweater alone is worth a few thousand, and this velour coat nearly reaches ten thousand. They were all bought by my second daughterâs partner. He spent half a day shopping with me without a single complaint. He has a good eye for fashion; the clothes he chose for me look great when I wear them."
She then pointed to the pearl necklace around her neck: "This was purchased by my Eldest with the money she earned. I didnât want it, but she insisted on buying it for me."
She lifted her hand, showing off a diamond ring on her right handâs ring finger: "This is part of a set; Third bought them for me and her dad. She said we didnât get rings when we got married, so now sheâs making up for it. Everything Iâm wearing was not bought by me. Ah, I never expected to raise three daughters who are all so filial. See, having daughters is great; their partners are all such good people too. The second daughterâs partner even accompanies me to the market, helping me pick vegetables and fruits. Whenever thereâs anything to do at home, heâs always there to lend a hand. Heâs really nice, and when we go out, people ask if heâs my son... Now I think about it, raising daughters was the right choice. What a blessing..."
Grandma Jiangâs face turned dark.
Auntie Jiang and the third auntâs faces were ashen.
The dinner was tough for Auntie Jiang and the third aunt; they felt sour inside, while Grandma Jiang was fuming. Mrs. Jiang, however, was able to release years of pent-up frustration. On the way home, she was all smiles and laughter.
She even said to Mr. Jiang.
"You didnât see the faces of the Eldest and Thirdâs families today, served them right. Back when they had sons, they were so proud it was as if theyâd reached the heavens. They didnât do any housework, pushed it all onto me, and strutted around the village with their sons all day. Theyâd tell me that without a son, thereâs no one to provide for your old age, pah! I may not have sons, but my three daughters are better than their three sons. You used to be so hung up about not having a son, feeling like you couldnât even raise your head in the village, thatâs why we left, right? How about now, still want a son?"
Mr. Jiang didnât dare to say he still wanted a son, quickly waving his hands: "No, no, not anymore. These three ladies are wonderful, simply marvelous, and chirpy as can be."
Third objected: "Dad, do you think weâre frogs?"
"Meow," Xiao Hua chimed in for Third.
"Iâm praising you, arenât I?"
Mr. Jiang scratched his head, all smiles too: "Daughters arenât bad at all. Our three daughters turned out well, and their future husbands wonât be any less fantastic. Not to mention the second son-in-law, heâs really something, chatty and engaging. We can talk about anything, and heâs got an impressive presence; itâs impressive to be seen out and about with him."
Third gave Mr. Jiang a glare: "Thatâs a son-in-law, not a dog."
Mrs. Jiang thought about Wei Jiaming: "The Eldestâs partner is also good-looking, graceful and refined, quite a feast for the eyes."
Third contemplated whether their parents were really just "face-connoisseurs" and whether sheâd need to find a good-looking partner in the future.
Xiao Hua also bowed her head, pondering.
In a villa, Gu Kai came out of his study and started looking at himself in the mirror in the cloakroom.
He scrutinized his face from all angles â his eyebrows and eyes werenât bad, his face shape was pretty good, nose quite prominent, and his lips were neither too thin nor too thick, just right. His appearance could really be shown off, quite impressive to be seen out and about with.
