Chapter 17: The Bait and the Bite

Chapter 17 · 4,958 words

Commander Briggs advanced through the smoke, the heavy, rhythmic thud-thud of his mechanized steps sounding like a death toll for the entire district. The gold-and-silver armor of The Tyrant-Frame gleamed under the rain, virtually untouched by the entire slum rebellion.

"Is that all the 'Sovereign' of the slums can do?" Briggs scoffed, standing before the collapsed warehouse facade. He raised his glowing plasma broadsword, pointing the tip directly into the dark crater where Asher lay. "You built a nice little rebellion, boy. You gave these trash-dwellers a little hope. But at the end of the day, the Federation always wins. Because we have the budget, and we have the steel."

From the shadows of the rubble, Asher slowly dragged himself out.

His cloak was completely shredded, hanging from his shoulders in charred ribbons. His pale skin was covered in deep, glowing violet gashes, and his left arm hung limply at his side, the bone fractured from the heavy impact. To Lucy, Jax, and the thousands of watching civilians, it looked like the end. Their hidden powerhouse had run out of power.

"Asher! Fall back!" Lucy screamed, her voice cracking as she tried to reload her pistol with shaking hands. "We can lock down the Hydro-Plant gates! We can buy you time!"

Asher didn't look back at her. He didn't look at Jax. He kept his glowing crimson eyes fixed entirely on Briggs' helmet.

"You think... this steel makes you a king, Briggs?" Asher rasped, his voice dripping with blood and dark static. He took a stumbling step forward, his balance uneven. "It’s just a cage. And you're just a small man hiding inside it."

"Keep talking, corpse," Briggs snarled.

The Tyrant-Frame’s thrusters ignited again. Briggs lunged forward, the plasma blade driving straight ahead in a lethal thrust intended to pin Asher to the ground and vaporize his core entirely.

Asher didn't dodge. He didn't activate Shadow Step.

He stood perfectly still, opening his arms wide, completely exposing his chest.

SHLUCK.

The two-meter plasma broadsword drove cleanly through Asher’s right shoulder, the superheated energy instantly cauterizing the flesh as it tore out through his back. The absolute agony made Asher’s vision go entirely white, his system screeching with terminal warnings.

[CRITICAL WARNING!]

[HP: 35/270]

[Fatal injury threshold reached! Lineage collapse imminent!]

"I have you," Briggs grinned, his face inches from Asher's through the reinforced glass visor of the mech. "It’s over."

"No," Asher whispered, his lips curling into a bloody, terrifying smile. "I have you."

With his remaining good left hand, Asher reached out and grabbed the golden chassis of the Tyrant-Frame’s chest piece, directly over the pulsing blue light of the dual-fusion heart core. His obsidian talons dug into the metallic seams, not to tear them apart, but to act as a physical conductor.

He let his true form completely explode. His horns grew to their maximum length, his skin turning a dark, armored gray, and his eyes flaring with a light so bright it blinded the mech's optical sensors.

"Jax! Lucy! Nora! Ren!" Asher’s voice echoed like thunder through the minds of his chosen cohort via the Monarch link. "Channel your energy into the network! Give me everything you have left!"

Through the mental bond, the four future lieutenants didn't hesitate. Jax’s obsidian arms erupted in violet fire, Lucy’s military focus sharpened, Nora’s technical knowledge surged, and Ren’s predatory focus aligned. Their collective lifeforce and determination rushed through the link, pouring straight into Asher’s depleting soul core.

[Monarch Link Active: Receiving temporary energy boost from 4 Subordinates!]

[MP replenished: 160/160!]

[Skill Activated: System Dominator (Rank: D) — Overclocked via Monarch Qi!]

A torrent of dark, demonic code flooded from Asher’s left hand, bypassing the military firewalls by using the physical broadsword in his shoulder as a direct, unshielded data bridge. The golden Tyrant-Frame instantly locked up, the blue dual-fusion core turning a violent, unstable shade of purple.

"What?! What are you doing?!" Briggs panicked, desperately trying to pull his sword back, but the mech’s hydraulic lines refused to respond. The internal cockpit displays were completely melting, overridden by the image of a massive, crimson-eyed demon crown. "Get off me! Release the suit!"

"Too late," Asher snarled.

[Passive Skill: 'Assimilation' activated on Rank 3 Dual-Fusion Core!]

The absolute ultimate ability of the Cyber-Demon Vanguard began its work at point-blank range. The gold-and-silver chest plate of the Tyrant-Frame began to pixelate, turning into a massive, swirling vortex of liquid silver and blinding blue fusion energy that poured straight into Asher’s open mouth and chest.

Briggs screamed as the very armor protecting him began to dissolve from the inside out, exposing his fragile human body to the toxic air of the slums.
