The Incubus System Chapter 863. Night Guest
Jill tilted her head, a bemused expression on her face. "Am I just hallucinating?" she asked.
"Yeah, maybe youâre just a bit too tense," I reassured her with a casual grin. I needed to keep her from diving too deep into that rabbit hole. Maybe a slight tweak of her memory, before she left, would be to keep her safe from future trouble.
Celia chimed in, her voice soothing. "And hey, what we talked about earlier? It was all about games. Just a game, okay?" she emphasized, shooting Jill a reassuring look.
Jill bobbed her head in agreement, her expression innocent and, in a way, a tad too trusting. "Okay," she chimed in, like she was signing off on a deal without knowing all the terms.
Shifting my gaze back to Celia, I attempted to steer the conversation. "Should we talk about something else?" I suggested.
Celia wasnât ready to let go of a certain concern. "Yes, but one more thing. Are the gramps and grandmas okay?" she inquired, her tone suddenly serious.
"They should be okay. Donât worry," I reassured her, attempting to inject some confidence into my words.
"Good," Celia declared, a satisfied smile stretching across her face. "So... snacks, anyone?" she offered, her eyes sweeping over our motley crew.
"Yay!" Jill cheered, a burst of enthusiasm radiating from her. My pets, always up for a good time, joined the celebration, hopping around in sheer happiness. Their excitement was infectious.
"Letâs go! We are going to have fries!" Celia announced with a renewed burst of energy, springing up from her seat. She extended her hand to Jill, a friendly grin plastered on her face.
Jill eagerly accepted the invitation, her innocent face lighting up with joy. "Fries sound awesome!" she exclaimed, following Celiaâs lead.
They all shuffled off to the kitchen, leaving Red behind. The little guy decided to stick around, maybe feeling a bit more comfortable with my company.
"Sorry, Your Highness," Red apologized in a hushed tone, making sure Jill and the gang were out of earshot.
I waved it off with a casual smile. "Itâs fine. I get it. Larryâs a bit of a handful," I admitted, my tone light. Still, there was a flicker of surprise that lingered. How could Larry face me so casually, like we were just catching up over a coffee when I just made a huge reveal?
Red, sensing my thoughts, chimed in with a shrug. "Larryâs just Larry, you know? Donât take it too seriously. I can sense it from him."
I chuckled, acknowledging the truth in Redâs words. "True that. But itâs still surprising how he handles the whole âdemon lordâ thing. Most people would be, I donât know, freaking out?"
Red nodded knowingly. "Well, Larryâs not most people. He even tried to pet me once. In my battle form. On the battlefield. It was the first time in my life."
I couldnât argue with that. Larry was a unique character, the kind who could probably face a dragon and challenge it to a game of poker. It was part of what made him such a good friend, his ability to roll with the punches. "You know, itâs not just the demon lord thing. Even his current whole demon hunter getup is something else. Have you seen that cool uniform of his?"
Red nodded, his little eyes gleaming with mischief. "Oh yeah, the whole âIâm here to save the dayâ look. Itâs not bad, but I kinda feel like it doesnât match his vibe."
I laughed at Redâs observation. "Youâve got a point. Larry is more of a casual kind of guy. The whole superhero ensemble seems a bit too... official for him."
In the midst of our banter, a bell chimed, its sound echoing through the room like an announcement.
*Ding Dong!*
My head snapped toward the door, eyebrows raising in mild surprise. It seemed Mrs. Clea had zipped over faster than Iâd anticipated. I figured sheâd still be knee-deep in dealing with the fallout from the earlier attack, but turns out, sheâd managed to fast-track her way to my doorstep.
I shot a quick glance at Red, who, for once, seemed to be at a loss for words. Maybe it was the unexpected arrival.
"Whoâs that?" Celiaâs voice echoed from the kitchen, curiosity dripping from every word. Jill, caught in the midst of fry-induced bliss, barely noticed the bell.
"Iâll get the door," I announced, pushing back my chair and standing up.
I rose from my seat, the worn-out floor creaking beneath my weight as I sauntered toward the entrance. Red was back to his feet and followed me.
As I reached the door, I pulled it open with the nonchalance of someone accustomed to the unexpected.
"Hey," I began, ready to greet the demon hunter chief, but the words froze on my tongue. It wasnât Mrs. Clea standing there, poised and composed. Instead, the figure before me was clad in a demon hunterâs gear, and it wasnât just any demon hunter, it was Nathan.
My casual greeting morphed into a stunned silence. There was an unsettling absence of anyone else around him.
He wasnât infected, though. His eyes gleamed with full consciousness. The realization hit me like a bolt, Nathan had come of his own accord, not at Mrs. Cleaâs behest. This wasnât a routine visit, something out of the ordinary had brought him to my doorstep.
