“Mom, did you go to Grandma’s house again today?” Ruan Chi asked, his expression not too good. He had not one good impression of his maternal grandmother’s entire family; when he was young he didn’t understand why, every time they went to Grandma’s house with gifts, they would fuss over him with warmth, but if they arrived empty-handed, the coldness was frightening.

Once he understood, there was no way he would go unless it was absolutely necessary.

He couldn’t believe his mother had actually weighed out a kilo of meat to take there—even though she’d just weighed out a kilo last month’s end. It had barely been half a month; how could she weigh another kilo again?

“What do you know? Go do your homework.” The last time Liao Zhaoji weighed the meat, she did it behind her family’s back, but unexpectedly, on her way she ran into Ruan Chi, who found out. Fearful that he might blurt it out, she hastily tried to preempt him by scolding him.

Turning her head, she then explained to the Ruanlin Family matriarch, “Mom, my mother’s been sick, not feeling well lately. The clinic doctor says she suffered a deficit in her health from a fall last time and needs to be well nourished. That’s why I weighed out a kilo of meat for her.”

“I don’t care who fell or who suffered a deficit in health. If you have money to buy meat, then stop begging here. I’m utterly ashamed for you!” The Ruanlin Family matriarch didn’t bother listening to those long-winded and foul-smelling excuses. She snorted coldly, turned around to head for the kitchen, then suddenly remembered something, and turned her gaze back to her.

“Speaking of nourishing someone, let me ask you this—Jiaojiao had a narrow escape from death when she fell ill. As her auntie, why didn’t you think to buy her something nice to eat, to help her recover?”

The Ruanlin Family matriarch snorted softly, “I am me, and you as her auntie are you. How can you conflate the two? Not to mention, her third auntie made her a piece of clothing, and her fourth auntie weighed out half a kilo of sugar for her. What about you?”
