"Brother Xian?" Jiaojiao called out suspiciously. "Is something up, Brother Xian?"
"What, I canāt talk to you if thereās nothing going on?" Lu Xian laughed, and it was the kind of laugh that came from deep within his chest, the kind that made you feel better just hearing it.
"Of course not, Jiaojiao is always happy to talk to Brother Xian! These past few days, aside from missing Mom the most, the person Iāve missed most is you, Brother Xian." Jiaojiao said, her words sweet as honey, flowing out effortlessly.
What she didnāt realize was that the moment she said this, Xiu Xiās expression turned visibly darker, almost instantly.
Shu Wen observed this unfold. She glanced meaningfully at Jiaojiao and Xiu Xi, then raised an eyebrow as if she had just come to some realization. With a bit of a gossiping streak in her tone, she pointed towards the pair at Shu Jiao, who had just walked over from the kitchen.
Shu Jiao didnāt respond to her teasing and instead called out to the father and son who were immersed in their video games, urging them to help out in the kitchen before turning back to her tasks.
"Haha..." Lu Xian laughed over the phone, clearly amused, and bantered a bit more with Jiaojiao before getting to the point.
"Jiaojiao, could Brother Xian borrow Rourou for a day? Just on the sixthāBrother Xian wants to take him out for a walk. I promise to keep him safe and bring him back in one piece," Lu Xian said.
Boys at his age were all about showing off. Lu Xian had bragged to his friends ages ago about knowing a wolf, but most didnāt believe him. This time, heād gotten into a bit of a toss-up while out playing, and he wanted to take advantage of the New Year holiday to bring Rourou along and bolster his image. Sure, Rourou was chubby enough to barely resemble a wolf, but as long as he flashed his teeth, there was still a shred of credibility there.
He simply wanted to use this vacation period to show off with Rourou.
"Sure!" Jiaojiao replied.
"No." Xiu Xi retorted.
Jiaojiao and Xiu Xi answered at the same time, but their responses couldnāt have been more opposite.
Jiaojiao furrowed her brows, silently accusing Xiu Xi. How dare he eavesdrop on her conversation! And worse than that, he didnāt even agree.
"That guy?" Lu Xian clearly heard Xiu Xiās voice on the other end of the line and asked, his tone carrying an inexplicable undertoneāa mix of mockery and helplessness.
Jiaojiao nodded. After nodding, she realized the person on the other end couldnāt see her, so she said, "Brother Xi is right here next to me. Brother Xian, itās fineāIām agreeing to it."
The moment she said this, Xiu Xiās face darkened again. Jiaojiao noticed but didnāt care. Instead, she reached out, clasped his hand, and flashed him her broadest, most ingratiating smile before continuing to address Lu Xian over the phone. "But Brother Xian, you absolutely must take good care of Rourou, okay? Rourou is a treasure that Brother Xi gave me. Very preciousāhe absolutely canāt get hurt!"
Upon hearing this, Xiu Xiās expression cleared up noticeably.
But a moment later, as if some grim thought had crossed his mind, his face darkened yet again. That scrawny wolf didnāt have even a fraction of the strength Xiu Xi had in his past life, and she calls it a treasure?
Pulling his brows together tightly, Xiu Xi was already scheming about how he might get rid of this so-called treasure quietly, without anyone finding out.
Shu Wen watched Xiu Xiās face change, his mood shifting faster than a chameleonās colors. As she picked through the vegetables nearby, she clicked her tongue in disbelief. There was an indescribable feelingālike she hadnāt eaten anything, yet somehow she felt a little queasy.
Meanwhile, Jiaojiao remained clueless, utterly unaware of the terrifying fate she had just doomed her beloved Rourou to.
After hanging up the phone, Jiaojiao grabbed Xiu Xiās hand and said, "Brother Xi, youāre so petty."
