"Donāt worry, with Ye Yu rushing over so impulsively, heās bound to suffer losses at Ye Yuanās hands," Xiang Zhen declared with certainty.
Especially since Ye Yu suspects that Ye Jiuliang sent someone to beat up Ye Miao, with Ye Yuanās protective nature, how could he tolerate Ye Yu slinging mud at Ye Jiuliang? Ye Yu is definitely in for a world of trouble going to him now.
All she had to do now was to wait for Ye Yuan to deal with Ye Yu, and she would reap the benefits without any effort.
"But Iām still worried, what if aunt provokes second uncle and, in his bid to prove Ye Jiuliangās innocence, he finds out it was you?" Ye Xin couldnāt shake off her concerns.
Xiang Zhen calmly replied, "I have my plans for this matter. You just need to keep your mouth shut."
Ye Xin nodded, still somewhat uneasy in her heart.
...
The wind picked up, adding another layer of fallen leaves to the courtyard.
Below the dim yellow lights, a tall figure paced back and forth in the garden.
Ye Yuan put down the little trowel, looking at the tender green seedlings on the ground with a satisfied smile curling his thin lips.
Just then, the doorbell rang, its decibels dampened when reaching the courtyard.
Ye Yuan took off his gloves and turned to walk back into the living room.
When he opened the door and saw the person standing there, a hint of surprise flickered across his face.
"Mingchong, what brings you here so late?"
Mingchong smiled and lifted the bag in his hand, "Just bored, care for a drink?"
Ye Yuan looked at the bag Mingchong was holding, which contained not only beer but also some snacks.
He flashed a smile and said, "Come on in first."
After changing shoes, Mingchong, bag in hand, stepped leisurely into the living room.
"Did Ajiu drop by today?"
As Ye Yuan closed the door and followed inside, he replied, "No, she said sheās been busy these days, but once sheās done, sheāll come stay for a few days. She wants to keep me company in the garden."
As he spoke, he couldnāt help but chuckle. His daughter was brilliant in every respect, but she had no talent when it came to gardening; not one seedling could survive in her care.
"Ajiu knows how to garden?" Mingchong placed the bag on the table, his voice incredulous and off-pitch from the shock.
Ye Yuan, seeing the indescribable expression on his face, could guess Mingchong must have witnessed Ajiuās gardening skills as well.
Holding back laughter, he said, "Sheās actually quite inept, Iām afraid sheāll have annihilated all the seedlings, so I took the time to plant the rest today."
"That quickly?" Mingchong was surprised, then smiled lightly, "I was thinking of coming over tomorrow to help. It seems I can save the effort."
Ye Yuan sat down opposite him and reached out to take the beer and snacks out of the bag, arranging them on the table one by one.
"No worries, Iāll definitely let you know when itās time to weed."
"I guess Iād better go on a business trip then," Mingchong quipped.
Weeding was no small task, and coupled with the hot weather, itās quite the chore.
Ye Yuan grabbed a beer and pulled the tab, "Ajiu sent you here, didnāt she?"
This late, it couldnāt have been a spontaneous visit to have drinks.
Mingchongās hand, reaching for the chopsticks, paused as he smiled helplessly, "Like father, like daughter, indeed."
"What did that girl Ajiu tell you?" Ye Yuanās eyes filled with tenderness when the topic turned to Ye Jiuliang.
"Nothing much, just that she was worried you might not be accustomed to returning to the capital, and since Iāve been idle these past few days and finding someone to drink with isnāt easy, I thought Iād come over," Mingchong explained.
Ye Yuan shook his head, his face gradually took on a more profound smile.
"Youāre not handling Tengyue Group anymore?" With no one else around, Mingchongās discussion topics were quite unrestrained.
Ye Yuan hummed faintly, "Leaving it to Li Mochan and the others is fine."
"So, what do you plan to do next, just guard that garden?" Mingchong turned his head to look through the French window. In the dim light, the palm-sized seedlings swayed in the wind.
He could understand the feeling of a heart turned to ash, for he had once felt the same.
"She used to love browsing travel brochures, and she said she wanted to travel around the world, but I never went with her," Ye Yuan said slowly.
"I will go to the places she wanted to visit and collect postcards from each place for her."
He habitually caressed the ring on his fingertip, a faint smile appearing on his lips.
Mingchong looked at him as if he saw a reflection of his own past self.
Just then, a knock on the door sounded again.
Ye Yuan put down his beer, raised an eyebrow; his house was quite popular at night.
He rose to open the door, and upon seeing the uninvited guest, the smile on his face immediately retracted.
He stood in the doorway, showing no intention of inviting them in.
"What are you doing here?" His tone was distant, as if he were facing a stranger.
Accustomed to Ye Yuanās cold demeanor, Ye Yu steadied herself, "Second brother, I know you look down on me, but Iām not here for any other reason. I just want to ask about something."
Ye Yuan did not respond but merely glanced at her.
"Second brother, Ye Miao was beaten in the alley behind the bar today, for no reason, and he just escaped death a short while ago," Ye Yu said solemnly.
Ye Yuanās expression remained indifferent, showing no reaction.
Remembering her own son lying injured in the hospital, Ye Yuās anger was unstoppable, and she asked straightforwardly, "Second brother, does Ye Miao being beaten have anything to do with Jiuliang?"
With her words, the temperature around them suddenly dropped.
Ye Yuan knitted his brows and finally looked at Ye Yu squarely, a mocking cold smile on his lips, "What, your son stirs up trouble outside, and when he gets beaten, you suspect my daughter? Ye Yu, youād better think before you speak, or donāt blame me for being rude."
Upon meeting his deep, dark eyes, Ye Yuās confidence diminished by half, "I..."
Before she could explain, a voice came from inside the room, forcefully cutting her off, "Ye Yu, you need evidence to back up your claims. Ye Miao getting beaten up in a place like a bar could be because he provoked someone. Donāt go splashing dirty water on my Ajiu without a second thought."
Ye Yu looked up to see the person coming out of the house, her expression faltering.
Mingchong was here too?
The surprise lasted only a moment before Ye Yu quickly regained her composure.
"Ye Miao offended Jiuliang before, and shortly after she returned, Ye Miao had an accident. Itās only logical for me to be suspicious. Besides, Iāve been to Mo Garden; the guard at the gate said that Jiuliang left two hours ago. Itās just too much of a coincidence that Ye Miao has an accident, and she leaves the capital." As she spoke, her voice grew agitated.
Ye Yuanās face darkened completely, his eyes sharpening with icy edges, "Do you have evidence?"
Ye Yu faltered, "I..."
If she had evidence, she would have confidently confronted him to settle the score instead of being here, bound and at his mercy.
"Lacking proof, get out now," Ye Yuanās voice became sharply fierce.
On the side, Mingchong listened and felt like applauding him.
Dealing with someone like Ye Yu who was disruptive and unreasonable required no courtesy; otherwise, they will overstep their boundaries.
Ajiu was their bottom line, untouchable by anyone.
