Suddenly, Ye Jiuliang halted in his tracks and fixed his gaze on her, his cool and thin eyes causing palpitations.
At this time, footstep sounds came from the stairwell, temporarily relieving Ye Yu from the encirclement.
Master Ye could guess why Ye Yuan and his daughter had come for a sudden visit.
"Jiuliang, have you had breakfast? Would you like to join us here?" Without inquiring about the reason for their visit, Master Ye asked in a warm tone.
Ye Yuan stood and bluntly refused, "No need, weâll leave after weâve made things clear."
Xiang Zhen felt a panic rising within her, always sensing that Ye Yuan would surely not say anything good next.
"Donât you want to know who hit Ye Miao?" Ye Yuan reached out to take a document from the table and handed it to Ye Yu, his voice cold, "Open your eyes wide and look carefully, donât suspect my daughter without evidence."
Ye Jiuliang keenly caught a flash of panic passing over Ye Xinâs face, the corners of his mouth hooking into a beautiful arc.
It seemed that things were becoming much more interesting.
Ye Yu opened the document bag and pulled out the papers inside, while Xiang Zhen clenched her fists, her palms sweating coldly.
After quickly scanning the contents of the document, Ye Yuâs face turned ashen, and hatred in his eyes almost spilled over.
It was her.
Xiang Zhen was unsettled, caught off guard by Ye Yuâs piercing gaze, which held a thinly veiled loathing.
"Ye Yu, why are you looking at me like that?" She forced a laugh, her speech faltering.
"It was you." Ye Yu gritted her teeth and said fiercely, slamming the document onto her body.
"Xiang Zhen, you dared to have my son seriously injured, and now you dare to put on an act here; this isnât over today."
As she spoke, she raised her hand and slapped Xiang Zhenâs face.
"Smackââ"
"Mom." Ye Xin was startled and cried out in shock.
Blood trickled from the corner of Xiang Zhenâs mouth, her left cheek bearing a distinct handprint, looking rather disheveled.
She looked down at the scattered documents on the ground, which contained the information of the person who had hit Ye Miao, as well as the remittance records between her brother and them.
A tightness gripped her heart, her mind going somewhat blank for a moment.
"Aunt, these must all be misunderstandings, please calm down a bit." Seeing that the situation was not good, Ye Xin stood in front of Xiang Zhen, urgently trying to soothe Ye Yu.
"Misunderstandings?" Ye Yu laughed sarcastically, pushed Ye Xin aside, and grabbed Xiang Zhen by the collar, "Xiang Zhen, you knew well how important Ye Miao is to me, yet you still acted against him. Youâre just afraid that Ye Lei and I would fight over the Ye Group. If you have the ability, donât play dirty; what skill is there in doing this?"
Xiang Zhen collected herself, and with everything now exposed, there was no need to feign pleasantry. She pushed her hand away fiercely, "And what right do you have to say that to me, Ye Yu? Donât think I donât know about your wild ambitions."
"As the daughter of the Ye Family who married out, and as a divorced woman staying in the Ye Family, youâve also taken plenty of benefits from the Ye Family over the years, you should be content. Now, not only are you ungrateful, but you also covet the Ye Group. You want your son to be the vice president, but do you think heâs cut out for that?"
Hating to have her divorce brought up more than anything, Ye Yuâs face darkened, and she raised her hand, wanting to slap Xiang Zhen again.
However, one can only be hit once, and Xiang Zhen grabbed her hand, forcefully pushing her away.
"You think I would let you hit me again? Ye Yu, youâre merely relying on the fact that you hold some leverage over the old man, otherwise, what makes you think you could stay in the group," blurted out in the heat of the argument without any regard.
Leverage?
Ye Jiuliang raised an eyebrowâit really was as she had suspected, but what exactly did Ye Yu have that could threaten the old master?
Seeing the secret that had been hidden for many years about to be exposed, Master Yeâs voice rushed out anxiously, "Enough, everybody shut up."
Damn it, how could Xiang Zhen also know about that matter.
Ye Yu, unwilling to let it go, turned her head to look at the old master, determined to take this opportunity to give Xiang Zhen a black mark, preferably to get her driven out of the Ye family.
"Dad, everything is clear now; you should do me justice. Ye Miao shouldnât have been beaten for nothing."
Master Yeâs headache intensified as he wanted to brush this matter aside quickly, "Xiang Zhen, you were wrong in this matter, apologize to Ye Yu."
"Dad, this is not something that can be settled with just an apology, unless you split five percent from Ye Leiâs shares to give to Ye Miao," Ye Yu said with a firm tone.
Her son was beaten like that, and she wanted to end the matter with just a sorry? Not so easy.
Without a second thought, Xiang Zhen retorted loudly, "Impossible."
"Ye Yu, donât think about profiteering from disaster; youâre not going to snatch Ye Leiâs shares," she said.
Then, suddenly turning to look at Ye Jiuliang, she made up her mind.
After all, she and Ye Yu had already had a falling out, and only if Ye Yu didnât have anything she could use to threaten the old master would she be unable to act so recklessly as before.
"Ye Jiuliang, Iâll tell you the truth: what Ye Yu is holding over our heads actually involves you," she said.
Ye Jiuliang looked at her indifferently, involved with her?
"Xiang Zhen, shut up," Master Ye interrupted urgently.
Determined to drive Ye Yu out of the Ye Group, Xiang Zhen didnât care for the consequences and said bluntly, "Ye Jiuliang, do you know why the old man suddenly changed his attitude towards you, why he went from disliking you to showing you particular favor?"
"Iâll tell you, it wasnât because of his guilt towards Ye Yuan; it was because of what that high monk said years ago. He claimed you were the noble person of the Ye family, that only you could bring things back from the brink when the Ye family faced a crisis," she yelled in one breath.
Suddenly, there was silence all around.
Ye Yuanâs expression turned cold as his gaze towards Master Ye filled with sarcasm and contempt.
He really shouldnât have believed that he held a shred of guilt towards him, thinking that he would have treated his daughter better in the past years because of this guilt.
It seems he thought too much; in his heart, from beginning to end, there was only the interests of the Ye family, everyone else was just a pawn in his game.
He was a pawn, and even his daughter was too.
Compared to his anger, Ye Jiuliang was much more composed, her expression calm, neither enraged nor bothered, as if an outsider to the situation.
She had always been clear that the old manâs kindness towards her was never pure, itâs just that she had never guessed the reason; now that she knew, she felt nothing, for she had never expected anything, so how could she be disappointed?
Her light gaze swept towards Master Ye, the corner of her lips curving into a playful smile, "So thatâs it, it seems youâre quite superstitious."
She paused for a moment, clicked her tongue, "But as for whether that high monkâs words are effective, I can tell you now, if the Ye family is in trouble, I will merely be an onlooker. As for saving the day, you might as well find someone else; such lofty deeds are fit for someone high and mighty, not for someone frivolous like me."
