Henwell looks visibly shaken as he respectfully tells Ashiburn, âBefore we reached Tule City, we were ambushed by experts from this organization. They didnât just gather a large band of thugsâthey also brought five Grand Knights.â
âWe fought bravely and lost many brothers. In the end, we killed two of them and severely wounded another. The last two, seeing the situation was hopeless, broke through with the injured companion and escaped.â
Henwell pauses for a moment.
Ashiburn immediately presses, âAnd then? They disappeared?â
Good! As long as you care about that.
Henwell continues, âNo, I have some tracking skills and kept their trail the whole time. After two days, I cornered them in a dead-end. But by then, I had no guards left. I wasnât confident taking on those bandits alone. They were cautious too and didnât dare fight me. So they began negotiating.â
âThey said they didnât want to kill me but wanted me to become a mole inside the church. They promised me abundant extraordinary resources to help me rise faster within the churchă And in return, Iâd pass information to them.â
Ashiburn asks, âDid you agree?â
Henwell nods. âForgive me, Archbishop! I needed a way out at that moment, so I played along. I have the respect of Archbishop Atwood and have fought alongside church knights.â
âI would never betray the church! I believe this matter is very serious, which is why I came to inform you. I fear someone may already be infiltrating the church.â
Ashiburn paces a few steps, then sighs deeply. âYou did well. But you should have agreed to their terms. This could be a great opportunity for us!â
Henwell looks puzzled. âI did agree at the time, and they believed me. They said they would contact me again later.â
Ashiburn is stunned for a moment, then excitedly asks, âImpossible! Theyâre usually so cautious. How could they let you join so easily?â
Henwell hesitates for a moment, then drops to one knee before Ashiburn. âForgive me, Archbishop! The truth is, I was born into that organization. As a child, I was sold as a slave to the Veil Organization. I spent several years in their training camp called Forge Furnace. Later, they made me a gladiator.â
âBy a stroke of luck, I managed to escape. The Bloodhorn Arena manager in the Kingdom of Billie is actually a member of the Veil Organization. I once tried to investigate these groups, which drew their attention. Since then, theyâve been targeting my forces constantly.â
âOne major reason I formed the Peace Haven army was to take revenge on this organization. Many of my generals are actually childhood friends who escaped from the Forge Furnace camp with me!â
âNow that my power has grown, the Veil Organization sees me as useful and wants to pull me back in. Iâve resisted fiercely, but theyâve sent assassins multiple times. Itâs only because my army is strong that Iâve survived.â
âAt first, I thought their goal was just to harm the Vorry Kingdom. After this recent incident, I realize their true aim is to infiltrate the church. I believe I cannot let this go unchecked, so Iâm telling you everything, Archbishop. Please forgive me. I truly had no choice back then but to learn killing under the Veil Organizationâs control.â
Ashiburn listens to Henwellâs incredible story, stunned for a long moment before excitedly pulling him up.
âWhatâs your name again? RightâHenwell! You did very well! You bear no guilt, it was all when you were just a child! So youâre saying that if you pledged loyalty to the Veil Organization, they would trust and accept you?â
Henwell hurriedly explains, âArchbishop, you see clearly. I have absolutely no intention of joining the Veil Organization. Otherwise, I wouldnât have told you all thisâŠâ
Ashiburn laughs heartily, patting Henwell on the shoulder. âHaha⊠Henwell, relax. I know youâre a good man. Youâd never betray us. But I mean, hypothetically! If the church needed you to infiltrate the Veil Organization, could you gain their trust?â
Henwell thinks for a moment, then cautiously asks, âSir, do you mean⊠I become a double agent? Pretend to join the Veil Organization but actually feed intelligence back to the church?â
Ashiburn quickly nods, âYes, yes! Thatâs exactly what I mean! So, what do you think? Could you gain their trust?â
Henwell thinks for a moment. âThe Veil Organization is tightly structured and extremely secretive. Theyâll definitely scrutinize me thoroughly. Theyâll want to confirm that I can actually provide the churchâs intelligence. Only by proving myself as a genuine traitor to the church will they see my value and trust me.â
Ashiburn waves his hand. âDonât worry about that. Weâll make sure you receive credible intelligence to pass along. That way, the Veil will get a taste of success and trust you more.â
Henwell looks troubled. âBut sir, this will harm the churchâs interests and might even cost some church members their lives. Please forgive me, but thatâs hard for me to accept. I can fight for the church, I can mobilize my army. I will do everything possible to battle the Veil Organization!â
Ashiburn sighs deeply. âAh, child, your loyalty, courage, kindness, and integrity are admirable. But youâre still young and donât fully understand this organization.â
âThe Veil has existed for many years. For thousands of years, the church and other forces have fought tirelessly to drive them here. But because of this landâs unique nature, itâs impossible to completely wipe out the Veil remnants.â
âThey lurk in the shadows like a venomous snake, constantly threatening the continentâs safety. Weâve tried sending spies before, but without exception, all have failed.â
âNow, thereâs a rare opportunity. Your experience and identity give us new hope. If you learn enough about the Veil from within, we can dismantle them from the inside. Even if we canât destroy them completely, weâll deal a significant blow.â
âThis is not the work of one or two people, itâs humanityâs collective mission, a great responsibility. Every sacrifice will be meaningful. On behalf of the church and humanity, I ask you to accept this difficult task.â
With that, Archbishop Ashiburn bows deeply to Henwell.
Henwell awkwardly helps him up. âArchbishop, what are you doing? Iâll accept, of course!â
