Volume 3 Chapter 153: Reunion 1 (2/3)
âŠThe soldier I can understand, but is a kid who lived in the forest for three years really that suspicious? I mean wasnât the crystal blue?
Just when is this going to end? âŠHmm?
Suddenly, I heard approaching footsteps stop just before the door.
âHey, Iâm going in. Oh!â [Hyuzu]
âAh!?â [Ryouma]
The person who entered was Hyuzu-san.
One of the guards of the dukeâs family. He is part of the reason why I left the forest.
âRyouma!ăItâs been a while!â [Hyuzu]
âLong time no see!â [Ryouma]
âGlad you didnât forget and called me. Just leave everything to me now.â [Hyuzu]
When we parted, he told me that if I just mentioned his name at the office of the guards that heâd come. Looks like that was true.
I sure wasnât expecting him to just barge in during questioning, thoughâŠ
While I was thinking that, the man questioning us spoke.
âHyuzu, what are you doing?â [Guard]
âYo, Swanson!ăI see youâre the same as ever.â [Hyuzu]
âIf you know, then get out!ăIâm in the middle of work right now! Hey! Give that back!â [Swanson]
Hyuzu-san took the paper the man was filling out and glanced through it.
âAh, SwansonâŠăSo this is what you were worried about. Donât worry. Heâs not lying. I can guarantee for him. Remember that time during spring when I almost died?â [Hyuzu]
âI heard you were done in while escorting the duke.â [Swanson]
âThe one who saved me then was this guy.â [Hyuzu]
âStill⊠Three years in the forestâŠâ [Swanson]
âHis situation is a bit complicated, but itâs not like heâs working for some bandit or something.ăBesides, the master himself can vouch for him. For now, just let him through. He really did come here to greet the duke. Although itâs more like he was invited as a guest.â [Hyuzu]
ââŠAlright. Donât forget his bounty for the bandits.â [Swanson]
âŠThat felt kind of forceful, but at least weâre free now.
âThank you very much, Hyuzu-san.â [Ryouma]
âLeave the talk for later. Hurry up and go before that guy changes his mind. Donât forget your bounty reward.â [Hyuzu]
âAh, yes. âŠThis bag of coins is yours, Fei-san.â [Ryouma]
âCan you store it in your dimension magic, Boss? Itâs extra luggage and I have enough coin on me for the time being.â [Fei]
âAlright. Iâll store it in my dimension magic for now.â [Ryouma]
Without time to spare for courtesies, we quickly left the office of the guards.
When we got out, the sun had already set and stars were twinkling in the night sky.
âYou sure found yourself in a mess.â [Hyuzu]
Hyuzu-san laughed as if he were just holding himself back earlier.
âIndeed⊠But he was just doing his job too, soâŠâ [Ryouma]
âWell, it helps a lot if you see it that way. Heâs not a bad guy. Although he has a tendency to pry at the slightest hint of suspicion and is really persistent⊠Heâs also caught a lot of criminals that couldnât be found out with just the use of the crystals.â [Hyuzu]
Hyuzu-san praised the man who took us in for questioning, but I was more interested in the âcriminals that canât be found with just the use of the crystalsâ. You could actually fool those things?
âItâs not really fooling them as much as those crystal balls werenât originally made to identify criminals. They canât actually reveal all the crimes a person has committed.â [Hyuzu]
Apparently, the church made those crystal. They were originally made to find out if a believer has violated a precept.
âMurder, rape, kidnapping, theft, injury⊠Actions like those go against the teaching of the gods, and those crystal balls can tell if youâve committed them. But from the perspective of the law, there are crimes outside of the teachings of the gods too.ăFor example, smuggling. Carrying goods that are forbidden from being traded is a crime. But prohibiting dangerous stuff like that is a rule that humans came up with later. The crystals donât respond to them.â [Hyuzu]
So it had that sort of weakness.
Still, just being able to identify a portion of the heavy crimes is plenty helpful. Itâs also a deterrent.
By the way, weâve been walking for a while now, but where exactly are we headed?
When I asked him, he suddenly stopped.
âSorry, sorry. I was in such a hurry to get out that I wasnât really thinking. Where do you want to go?â [Hyuzu]
Oh, yeah. This guy has always been a little clumsy, hasnât he? Well, heâs a good person, anyhow.
Seeing as didnât have any particular destination in mindâŠ
âWould you happen to know an inn with the odd name of âI Love Horsesâ?ăIâm supposed to meet up with a person from the Morgan Company there. We plan to visit the dukeâs family afterwards.â [Ryouma]
âOh! I know that place!ăThatâs the inn of the old man fond of horse racing⊠He loves them so much he named his inn after his love for them. You better not say anything about horses to him or youâll never hear the end of it.â [Hyuzu]
Looks like he knows him well. He looks happy.
He knew the path like the back of his hand. In fact, he knew the way so well that he moved quickly even in the narrow alleys.
Along the wayâŠ
âOh! Hyuzu!â [Man 1]
âWhat are you doing at a time like this~?â [Man 3]
âWork! Iâm in the middle of one right now!â [Hyuzu]
âWork?ăSo what are you doing walking at a place like this?â [Man 1]
âArenât you free?ăLetâs drink!â [Man 2]
âHyuzu-san, wonât you have a drink with us~?â [Man 3]
âWeâll give you some service.â [Woman]
âAh⊠Iâm happy you invited me, but I have to send this guy off. Iâll drop by later.â [Hyuzu]
âCould it be? Is that your illegitimate son!?â [Man 1]
âWhat was that!?ăWhoâs the mother!?â [Man 2]
âHeâs not mine!â [Hyuzu]
âHa ha ha ha!!ăOf course not!ăHe doesnât look like you at all!â [Man 1]
âHe looks too smart to be your own!â [Man 2]
âHe looks too good to be yours!â [Man 3]
âNo way Hyuzu can father a kid like that!â [Man 4]
âWhat did you say, you drunks!?â [Hyuzu]
âOh, if it isnât Hyuzu-san. Please drop by our store again next time. Iâll serve you some tea.â [Old Woman]
âOh, itâs the old woman from the general store. Iâll go next time, so make sure to serve some cake too.â [Hyuzu]
âOk. But the cake will cost you.â [Old Woman]
As we went on our way, a lot of people called out to Hyuzu-san. He seemed to be on good terms with every one of them.
