Wushuang City was one of the larger cities in the Divine Weapon Civilization and housed millions of people within it. Naturally, where there were people, there were clans and sects. Many clans and sects in the city clashed daily due to conflicting interests.
Among these was a new clan calling themselves War, formed for their namesake. Their three founding members were all from the Divine Civilizationâthe fourth year valedictorian and third year student of the Warfare College, Gan Xiangyu and Gong Jun, as well as a second year student of the Imperial College, Hei Qi.
At the moment, the three were fighting against another small clan in the city.
Gan Xiangyu danced about with his dragon spear. Dragon-shaped bursts of air flowed around him, killing anything it touched. Gong Jun was blasting the houses of the opposing clan away with his cannon. It was slow but powerful.
The two had killed half of the opposing clan members. Hei Qi singlehandedly slaughtered the other half.
Hei Qi swung his long, black blade, conjuring up illusions of demons. Heads rolled with every strike. In just thirty minutes, the three successfully massacred a clan of a hundred men.
Stabbing his blade into the corpse of the opposing clan head, Hei Qi sighed. âThat feels good!â
The corpse was shrivelling up at a rapid pace, its power entering his body as he absorbed its essence.
Both Gan Xiangyu and Gong Jun had unlocked their third Divine Weapon. Hei Qi was absorbing more essence than them, and wouldâve normally unlocked his fourth. However, under the effects of an evil contract, he didnât receive a new Divine Weapon. Instead, the long sword in his hands flashed brighter.
âI upgraded it again. I knew killing people was the fastest route.â Hei Qiâs presence had changed with his sword upgrade, and wisps of evil aura seemed to leak out of him.
âHei Qi, are you ok?â Gan Xiangyu asked, concerned. Being from the same circle, Hei Qi had often followed Gan Xiangyu around while they were children, and Gan Xiangyu thought of him as his brother.
âBrother Xiangyu, Iâm feeling great!â Hei Qi replied, a hint of madness in his eyes.
Gan Xiangyu frowned. âHei Qi, I suggest that you stop using the Evil God Contract that General Butcher gave you. If you continue like this, itâll eventually take over your mind. Youâll become its puppet.â
âBrother Xiangyu, donât worry about my willpower.â Hei Qi beamed with confidence. âI can suppress the will of the evil god with ease.â
Gan Xiangyu was unconvinced. It was clear that the evil god was already influencing Hei Qi. At this rate, the contract would gradually consume all his other Divine Weapons to strengthen the black sword.
After that, it wouldnât take long for Hei Qiâs willpower to wane, leaving him vulnerable to the evil godâs corruption. Gan Xiangyu truly couldnât comprehend why General Butcher would give Hei Qi this contract. It was equivalent to letting him shoot himself in the foot.
Gong Jun placed a hand on Gan Xiangyuâs shoulder. A gesture of both dissuasion and comfort all in one. âXiangyu, thatâs enough. We canât wake someone whoâs pretending to be asleep. Do you really think heâll listen to you?â
Gan Xiangyu was about to give in when something occurred to him. âHeâs only obsessed with strength because of that student Han Wu. If we kill Han Wu, maybe we can stop Hei Qi from falling further.â
âI donât know how strong Han Wu is, but I heard rumors that heâs quite powerful.â Gong Jun hesitated.
âSo what if heâs strong in the Divine Civilization?â Gan Xiangyu scoffed. âWeâre in the Divine Weapon Civilization now. Weâve all been reset to the same starting line. How much stronger could he be right now?â
Gong Jun nodded. âYouâre right. Letâs kill him. We have plenty of brothers on our side. Once we become famous, we can gather them before going to kill Han Wu. I doubt he can do anything against so many of us.â
The Warfare College loved group battles. The lecturers at that college often admonished students for not using their strength in numbers to their advantage.
Gan Xiangyu stared at Hei Qi with concern in his eyes and quietly vowed, âHan Wu, no matter where you are, we will find you.â
Meanwhile, Han Wu had followed the chiefâs direction to the closest town, Qixia Town. Night had already fallen by the time he reached there on foot.
âI need to get a horse next time. Walking is too slow with this avatar,â he grumbled.
The moment he entered the town, he immediately noticed something amiss: There was no one there. No one had lit any lights in their house, giving the entire town an eerie vibe.
Han Wu frowned. The chief had suggested this place precisely because there wasnât supposed to be any danger, but it appeared that had recently changed.
Given his strength, he would be hard-pressed to escape if he ventured deeper into town unprepared and encountered a slew of enemies, so he opted to wait outside till dawn before coming back.
As he was about to leave, the chiming of bells echoed from the town gate. A group was walking into the town. Each of them wore white hats, white shirts, and rang the bells while scattering hell notes. They were also carrying a black coffin.
Worried, Han Wu summoned his two souls to protect him. The group entering the town resembled fake ghosts, but he actually had two real ones by his side.
Noticing Han Wu, the group walked over.
Han Wu summoned his weapons and prepared to fight. As the group approached, he noticed that all of them had ashen faces and radiated an eerie chill. They had all been dead for a long time.
They were an undead called Shamblers. Fortunately, there were only thirty of them, so Han Wu wasnât too concerned. After all, he was an expert in skeleton wave warfare.
No one spoke. Han Wu blocked the road. The Shamblers did not move. This only lasted for ten seconds before scratching sounds came from inside the coffin.
Han Wu smiled. It seemed the owner of the Shamblers couldnât stay still any longer. The coffin opened up to reveal a shriveled old man in black clothes.
âWho dares to block the path of my Profound Netherworld Cult?â The old man sneered. Then, seeing the two souls beside Han Wu, his tone changed. â
Oh
? Youâre a kindred spirit. Why have you not greeted me? Which sect are you from?â
Han Wu scoffed. âGreet? As if.â
