Chapter 800 INTERVIEW (VI)
THIS Saunders was starting to sound like bad news to Luo Yan. First, the other was MIA when he called for the servants to gather. Then, he found out that Saunders was working as the driver of the Harcourts even 20 years back. And now, he was told that the other was seen coming out of his masterâs study which was now proven to be one of the rooms where the bomb was planted.
A lot of question started to pile up again. But right now, his interview with Edward should come first. He told a servant to call Edward in.
After a few seconds, Edward entered the study with his usual huff and puff with just a sprinkle of snootiness. He didnât greet Luo Yan and just directly sat down on the seat opposite the desk.
âLetâs get on with your questions, detective,â the other said. âYou ask and I answer. The faster we get over this, the better.â
âWell, then, can you tell me where you were between 12 and 1 AM?â he asked.
âIâm asleep at my room.â
âCan anyone vouch for that?â
âYes, my fiancĂ©e can.â
Luo Yan almost let out a chuckle when he heard that answer. Probably because of the fact that he saw Sofia skulking about near the masterâs bedroom during the said time.
But thereâs still a chance that the other was saying the truth. The two might have really been staying in the same room. The moment Edward had fallen asleep, Sofia walked out of their room. Though what probably surprised him more was the fact that this guy didnât even hesitate to name Sofia as his alibi.
Even if this was the 1930s, the society was still very conservative. Having a woman slept in the same room as a man, even if one was that manâs fiancĂ©e, was highly frowned upon. For this guy to not even hesitate to share that information showed just how little he thought of his fiancĂ©eâs reputation. And a misogynistic tendency as well.
Luo Yan didnât really care much for the otherâs character. Whatâs important to him was the information he could gleam from this guy.
âWhere did you go after dinner?â he asked.
Edward frowned. âIs that really important?â
âMr. Edward, as you said yourself, I ask, you answer. If you want to finish this faster, you should avoid questioning me,â Luo Yan said with a smile. âAnswer my question, please.â
Edward scoffed. âI was talking to old man Wells, trying to convince him to change Fatherâs mind. You can go ask the old man and Iâm sure he will corroborate it.â
Luo Yan took that down on his notepad.
âWhat can you tell me about the incident 20 years ago? The one that caused the original Magnolia Manor to burn down.â
Edward looked like he very much wanted to complain. Most likely thinking that this and that were not connected at all. But because of their conversation about answering questions quickly, his pride wouldnât allow him to directly complain.
âWhat else is there to tell? You already spoke with my two other siblings. Iâm sure they had already told you everything.â
âThey did say that bombs were planted in the different rooms of the manor. These bombs were the cause of the explosion. It also came to my attention that you have ample motive and wits to execute such a plan. So, did you or did you not plant bombs in the manor that year?â
This time, Edward no longer stopped himself from reacting violently. âOf course not! How dare you even suggest that I could have done so?â
Luo Yan ignored the otherâs reaction. âYou were starting your political career that time. You didnât have â and still donât have â a source of income other than the allowance given to you by your father. Just like last night when your father announced that he would cut you and your other siblings off from his will, he did the same thing 20 years ago. In both situations, you had ample motive to commit both crimes. Donât you think so as well?â
âThen, how about Charles and Catherine? You really think theyâre not capable of any of the things youâre accusing me?â Edward asked, thoroughly enraged.
âAlthough Charles might have a reason to, well, burn your father to stop him from changing his will, he didnât have one 20 years ago. He was still too young back then. He didnât have the means nor the opportunity. And from what Iâve heard, he and your deceased brother, Richard, were very close. Even if he was cut off from the will, Richard would definitely support him.
âNow, thereâs your sister, Catherine. Although Iâm not so sure as I am with Charles, it wouldnât be easy for such a timid woman to execute such a plan. Soââ
Luo Yan was interrupted from what heâs saying because of Edwardâs sudden loud laughter.
âI can accept your explanation for Charles. But Catherine? You think sheâs not capable of such a thing?â Edward laughed. âDonât be fooled by her stuttering act. Dear Cathy is no shrinking violet. That, I assure you. Sheâs very much capable of murder. At least, as much as you think I am.â
Luo Yan raised one of his brows. Now thatâs interesting. âAre you saying that your sister is just⊠acting?â
âThatâs exactly what Iâm saying.â
An image of Catherine appeared in Luo Yanâs mind. The first description he could think of was that of a woman who was under control of her husband. But if Edward was saying the truth, then, that would change a lot of the conclusion he had reached.
âWhy would she do that?â he asked.
Edward smirked. âBecause itâs her hobby.â
âSo, youâre saying that sheâs letting her husband lord over her and act all squeamish and incapable of straight speech because itâs her hobby?â
Edward carelessly shrugged. âCatherine has a problem here,â he said pointing at his temple, indirectly telling Luo Yan that his sister was crazy. âIf you asked me, sheâs more than capable enough to kill Father.â
