Adam opened his mouth to respond to Lilithâs pouty defense of her honesty, but before he could form words, a familiar voice erupted directly into his mindâloud, enthusiastic, and thoroughly impatient.
âADAM! Are you two DONE yet?! I finished cleaning up all the bandits out here AGES ago! There were so many of them, it was FUN, but now Iâm BORED and youâre taking FOREVER! What are you even DOING in there?!â
Adam winced slightly at the volume, rubbing his temple. "Ignis says sheâs done with the bandits outside and is bored waiting for us."
Lilithâs pout transformed into a small, knowing smile. "Ah. The little firecracker grows impatient. How... expected."
Adam projected his thoughts back through the mental link, keeping his tone calm. âWeâre almost done in here. Got some prisoners to release. Just wait a little longer.â
âFiiiiine,â Ignisâs mental voice came back, sulky but acquiescent. âBut hurry up! I wanna see whatâs in here!â
Adam shook his head, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "She says fine, but she wants to see whatâs inside."
Then the system notifications scrolled across his vision, and he blinked.

Adamâs eyebrows rose slightly. "Huh. Thatâs... a lot."
Lilith tilted her head. "More notifications?"
"Yeah. The bandits Ignis just finished offâforty-three of them. Gave me enough to level up twice." Adam flexed his fingers, feeling the familiar surge of increased strength settling into his muscles. "Not bad for cleanup duty."
Silvieâs expression darkened as she spoke, her voice tight with a mixture of disgust and grim duty. "Thereâs another holding area. Deeper in the caves. We found it while searching for supplies." She paused, her jaw tightening. "There are humans there. Prisoners like usâbut some have been... violated. Others were being prepared for sale as slaves alongside us."
She spat the last words like poison, her earlier gratitude momentarily overshadowed by raw revulsion. "These bandits are filth. Absolute filth."
Adamâs expression didnât change, but his eyes hardened slightly. "I see."
Silvie took a breath, visibly steadying herself. "Weâll give them food. Supplies. Whatever they need to survive." She met Adamâs gaze, and there was something almost defiant in her expressionâas if expecting him to question her decision. "I know what youâre thinking. Weâre elves. Theyâre humans. After everything humans have done to us, why would we help?"
She shook her head slowly. "But theyâre prisoners too. They didnât choose this any more than we did. And if we abandon them now... weâre no better than the people who put us in cages."
Adam studied her for a long momentâthe fire in her eyes, the way she held herself despite exhaustion and grief, the absolute certainty in her voice. There was something almost... familiar about it. A dignity that refused to be broken.
âSheâs got spirit,â he thought, a flicker of approval crossing his features. âBarely escaped slavery, just watched her people die, and sheâs still worried about doing the right thing for humans. Thatâs... actually kind of impressive.â
Out loud, he simply nodded. "Good call. Make sure they get enough to travel." He paused, then added, "Youâre handling this better than most would."
Silvie blinked, caught off guard by the unexpected praise. A faint flush touched her cheeksâbarely visible beneath the grimeâand she looked away quickly. "I... itâs just whatâs right. Thatâs all."
Lilithâs crimson eyes flickered toward Silvie, catching something in the elfâs expression that made her inner predator sit up and take notice. The way Silvieâs gaze lingered on Adam. The faint flush that had crept across her cheeks when he praised her. The slight breathlessness in her voice when she called him "Savior."
âSo this is how it starts,â Lilith thought, her mental voice cool and amused despite the possessive heat curling in her chest. âA rescued maiden, grateful and vulnerable, looking at her hero with those big, earnest eyes. She doesnât even realize it herself yet. But sheâs falling. Falling hard.â
The realization was... irritating. Not threateningânothing about this fragile elf could threaten Lilithâs positionâbut irritating nonetheless. Like discovering a small, persistent insect had found its way into her chambers.
âIâll need to monitor this. Carefully. Adam is oblivious to these things, which is both endearing and frustrating. Heâll see her gratitude, her earnestness, her desperate need to prove herself worthy of his help. He wonât see whatâs really growing in her heart.â
Lilithâs lips curved into a small, private smileâthe expression of someone who had already mapped out the next several moves in a game her opponent didnât even know they were playing.
âBut I see it. And I wonât let Adam stay here any longer.â
Outwardly, she gave no sign of her internal calculations. Her hand found Adamâs, fingers intertwining with practiced ease.
"Come, Adam. Letâs go outside. Ignis is waiting, and you know how she gets when sheâs bored." She tugged gently at his arm, her voice carrying that familiar, silken warmth. "Weâve been separated from the others long enough."
Adam allowed himself to be pulled, though he shot her a questioning look. "Hey, Lilithâslow down a bit."
"We should hurry," Lilith replied serenely.
"Wait a moment, Savior."
Silvieâs voice cut through, clear and urgent. Adam stopped mid-stride, turning back toward her. "What is it? Did you find something?"
Silvie nodded, gesturing toward one of the larger buildings near the caveâs rear. "We found the banditsâ storage room. There are weapons, coin, magical artifactsâthings they stole from their victims over months of raiding. Please, take whatever interests you."
Adamâs eyebrows rose. "Artifacts, huh?" His gaze drifted toward the building, interest flickering in his crimson eyes. The Crownâs recent feast had reminded him just how useful unexpected treasures could be. "That actually sounds interesting. Might be worth checking out."
Lilithâs smile didnât waver, but something shifted behind her eyes. Her grip on Adamâs hand tightenedâjust slightly.
âThis elf,â she thought, her internal voice taking on a sharper edge. âShe creating excuses for him to stay longer.â
Outwardly, she remained the picture of elegant composure. "Adam, perhaps we should rejoin the others first. Weâve been separated for quite some time, and Ignis is waiting. Besides," she added, her tone light and reasonable, "we have no idea if the artifacts there are even worth examining. They could be mere trinkets."
Adam glanced between Silvie and Lilith, seemingly unaware of the silent tension crackling between them. "Itâll only take a few minutes to check. If thereâs nothing good, we leave. If there is..." He shrugged. "Waste not, want not."
Lilithâs inner eye twitched.
Silvieâs face lit up with a genuine smileâthe first one Adam had seen from her since theyâd met. It transformed her features, chasing away some of the exhaustion and grief that had etched lines into her young face.
"Follow me, Savior! This way!" She gestured eagerly toward one of the larger buildings near the caveâs rear. "We found some truly remarkable items in the storage room. If you donât take them, youâll regret it!"
Adamâs eyebrows rose at her enthusiasm. A small, amused smile tugged at his lips. "Well, when you put it that way..." He glanced at Lilith, his expression brightening with genuine interest. "Sheâs got a point. We might find something useful for you and Ignis too. Artifacts, weapons, maybe even some defensive gear."
Lilithâs smile remained perfectly in placeâserene, elegant, utterly unreadable. But her inner voice was considerably less composed.
âLook at her, practically glowing with the joy of being useful to him.â
Her fingers tightened almost imperceptibly on Adamâs hand as she allowed herself to be pulled along.
They entered the storage building, and Adam stopped short.
The room was packed. Shelves lined every wall, stacked with weapons, armor, and glittering magical trinkets. Chests overflowed with coinsâgold, silver, even a few gleaming platinum pieces. Scrolls and tomes filled wooden crates. Enchanted jewelry hung from hooks like ordinary decorations.
Adam let out a low whistle. "These bandits... theyâre loaded."
Silvieâs expression darkened, the momentary brightness fading. "Itâs because of their filthy work. Elf slaves fetch a high priceâespecially purebloods like my clan. The bandits have been raiding our caravans and settlements for months." She gestured at the wealth around them, her voice tight with suppressed anger. "Every coin here is stained with the blood of my people. Every artifact was stolen from victims who are now dead or enslaved."
Adamâs gaze swept over the treasure, his expression thoughtful. "Then itâs fitting that youâre the one giving it away." He glanced at her. "You could keep all this for yourself. Rebuild your clan. No one would blame you."
Silvie shook her head firmly. "No. You earned this. You saved us. The treasure is yours by right." She met his eyes, and there was something almost fierce in her expression. "Take whatever you want. Use it to help others. Thatâs the best possible outcome for these ill-gotten gains."
Adam studied her for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "Alright. Then Iâll take you up on that."
