Adam looked at Lilith, who was watching him with that characteristic serene expressionâcrimson eyes half-lidded, pale features illuminated by the dying firelight.
âSheâs really beautiful when sheâs quiet like this,â he thought, the realization striking him with unexpected force. âWell, sheâs usually beautiful too, but sometimes sheâs also... terrifying.â
"Youâre not thinking anything inappropriate about me, are you?" Lilithâs voice cut through his reverie, soft but knowing.
Adam blinked, caught off guard. "No."
Lilith leaned closerâclose enough that Adam could smell her scent, something floral and faintly exotic, mixed with the subtle undertone of her own unique presence. The firelight caught the curve of her lips as she smiled.
"Then why did you suddenly call me over?" Her voice was a low murmur, meant only for him.
Adam forced himself to focus, pushing past the distracting warmth of her proximity. "Itâs because youâve been acting strange today. Well, not just today, but lately youâve been... different. Whatâs going on?"
Lilithâs expression flickeredâjust for a moment, a crack in that serene mask. Then it smoothed over. "Nothingâs going on."
Adamâs eyes narrowed slightly. "Really? Are you stressed about something? If thereâs a problem, you should tell me. Weâre family."
The word hung between them for a moment. Family. Lilithâs gaze dropped, her fingers twitching almost imperceptibly.
"Itâs because of you," she said quietly.
Adam blinked, genuinely confused. "Because of me? Did I do something?"
Lilith looked up at him, and for once, her crimson eyes held something other than calm calculation. Frustration. Vulnerability. And beneath that, something warmer.
"Itâs because you keep getting close to other women," she said, her voice carrying an edge of accusation. "And it makes me jealous. Thatâs all." She looked away, a faint flush coloring her pale cheeks. "Honestly, youâre so oblivious."
Adam stared at her for a long moment, processing. Then, slowly, understanding dawned.
âJealous? Sheâs... jealous? Of Elise? Of Silvie?â The pieces clicked into placeâthe possessive hand-holding, the subtle digs, the way she always positioned herself between him and any other woman who got too close. âI didnât realize...â
"Ah," he said finally, eloquently. "Thatâs... I didnât know."
Lilith let out a soft huff, rising to her feet. "Well, now you do. Iâm going to sleep."
She turned to leaveâ
And stopped.
Adamâs hand had caught hers. Not tightly, but firmly enough to halt her retreat.
"Wait, Lilith." His voice was quiet but steady. "Iâm not done talking."
Lilith turned back, her expression guarded but curious. "What else is there to say?"
Adam didnât answer with words.
He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a firm embrace. For a moment, Lilith went completely stillâgenuine shock freezing her usually graceful movements. Her hands hovered in the air, unsure where to land.
Then, slowly, she relaxed against him.
Adamâs voice came quietly, his chin resting atop her head. "Iâm sorry. For making you feel that way." He paused, gathering his thoughts. "The truth is... I still donât really know what Iâm doing. My mind is a mess right now, thinking about Alice all the time. I donât want to start something halfwayâsomething that isnât fair to you, or to me, or to anyone."
He felt her shift slightly against his chest.
"And I thought... I thought we could take this slow. Not rush into anything. Just... let things happen naturally." His arms tightened slightly. "I didnât realize you were hurting because of it. Thatâs my fault."
Lilith was quiet for a long moment. Then her arms finally came up, wrapping around his waist, returning the embrace.
"If thatâs how you felt," she murmured against his chest, "you should have said so from the beginning." A soft, almost reluctant laugh escaped her. "Idiot."
Adam huffed a quiet laugh of his own. "A leader canât afford to look weak."
"A leader also needs to be understood," Lilith countered, pulling back just enough to look up at him. Her crimson eyes were softer than heâd ever seen themâstill sharp, still knowing, but with something vulnerable beneath. "But youâre right. This is my fault too. I didnât ask. I just... assumed and let it fester."
She leaned her head back against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. "Weâll take it slow. As slow as you need." A pause, then a quieter addition: "Even if you did compare me to Alice. That still stings, you know."
Adam winced slightly. "Sorry. Thatâs because your possessive streak reminded me of her. I didnât meanâ"
"I know." Lilithâs voice was soft, forgiving. "But jealousy and possessiveness are different things, Adam. You should learn to tell them apart."
They stood like that for a long moment, wrapped in each otherâs warmth, the fire crackling softly nearby. The night was quiet, the camp peaceful, and for the first time in days, the tension that had been building between them seemed to finally ease.
Adamâs hand came up, gently stroking Lilithâs hairâthe same absent motion heâd used earlier, but now with more intention. More meaning.
"This is nice," he admitted quietly.
Lilith hummed in agreement. "It is."
After a moment, she tilted her head up again, a hint of her usual teasing smile returning. "So. Does this mean Iâm allowed to keep holding your hand in front of other women?"
Adam snorted. "You were going to do that anyway."
"True." Her smile widened. "But now I have permission. Thatâs much more satisfying."
Then Lilith pulled back slightly within the circle of his arms, a faint frown creasing her usually serene features. "I feel something strange in my stomach."
Adamâs expression shifted immediately to concern. He released her carefully, stepping back. "Youâre probably just exhausted. Today was intense for everyone." He gestured toward her usual spot beneath the cart. "You should rest."
Lilithâs eyes drifted downwardâbriefly, almost imperceptiblyâthen back up to his face. A slow, knowing smile curved her lips.
"Youâre right," she agreed, her voice carrying that familiar silken warmth. "I should sleep."
But she didnât move.
Adam blinked. "So... go ahead. Iâll keep watch."
Lilith stepped closer insteadâclose enough that the space between them vanished. Her hand came up, cool fingers pressing against his cheek with surprising strength. Adam felt the gentle but undeniable pressure guiding his face toward hers.
âHer grip is strong,â he thought, momentarily caught off guard.
Their lips met.
The kiss was soft at firstâtentative, exploringâthen deepened with a confidence that was pure Lilith. Her other hand found his shoulder, steadying herself, while her fingers curled against his jaw like she was claiming something precious.
For Adam, time seemed to stop. The fire crackled somewhere in the distance. The wind whispered through the trees. And Lilithâs lips moved against his with a tenderness heâd never expected from someone so deadly.
Then, slowly, she pulled back.
Her crimson eyes fluttered open, soft and warm in a way heâd never seen before. A small, satisfied smile curved her lips with genuinely happy.
"Goodnight, Adam."
She turned and glided away toward the cart, her movements fluid and graceful, leaving Adam standing frozen by the dying fire.
He raised a hand slowly, touching his own lips where the warmth of her kiss still lingered.
"Crap..." The word came out in a dazed whisper. "I got beaten to it."
