Chapter 1696 - 1689: He Took Lin Yu Back to Make Her His Concubine

Chapter 1696 -1689: He Took Lin Yu Back to Make Her His Concubine

She has persevered for ten years!

Until now…

“I haven’t forgotten!” Lin Yu blushed in embarrassment after he uncovered the scars, “I’m just a penniless beggar, and I’m grateful that General Ye saved my life! But shouldn’t I also have the chance to decide my own life?

Why can’t I become a beautiful woman, marry a good husband, and live my life?”

“You…” Ye Hongru was stunned by her words.

He had never expected Lin Yu to have such thoughts.

To marry and settle down.

This was the inevitable path for every woman throughout the ages — women who neither married nor settled down often faced severe criticism, sometimes even forced to their deaths.

But wasn’t Lin Yu supposed to be like Lin Sisi?

In his heart, the woman he most revered had never told him she needed to marry to have a fulfilling life!

Ye Hongru was greatly shaken. Not only was he unable to persuade Lin Yu, but he could no longer convince himself!

He and Lin Yu sat there, one sullenly silent, the other wordlessly quiet.

Their silence was enough to make Lin Sisi and Saint Ruan visibly distressed.

Saint Ruan stepped out from Wangjiang Tower, swinging his sleeves casually and sneering, “That Lin Yu won’t amount to anything. In the future, she’ll just be another woman married off, spending her days washing clothes, cooking meals, and raising children!”

“Well, that’s not necessarily true. Women training in martial arts and serving as soldiers already have a much harder path than men. It’s normal for her to have other thoughts at her age, caring for her appearance is also understandable. It’s just a pity, if she can’t let these things go, she won’t be able to walk the path I’ve taken.”

Lin Sisi heaved a heavy sigh.

She felt there was a streak of determination in Lin Yu, somewhat akin to her own!

It didn’t seem like Lin Yu was the type of woman who would be content to marry, wash clothes, cook meals, and care for her husband and children.

She had fought and struggled for ten years.

But Lin Sisi couldn’t think of any way to help her overcome this challenge.

Chu Jinling visited Wangjiang Tower again to observe the women’s training, where he bumped into Ye Hongru. Ye Hongru, at a loss, recounted Lin Yu’s situation to him. Moreover, he had already investigated and found out that Yang Xianhui and Fu Yuan, despite their impressive martial arts skills and knowledge of military tactics, had families arranging their marriages too.

It seemed unlikely that they’d be able to join the military as commanders in the future.

No one like Lin Sisi, the heroic and awe-inspiring female general, could emerge again.

“Sisi was indeed irreplaceable, but doesn’t Imperial Uncle hope to create more paths for women across the nation? Ultimately, isn’t it about their own wishes?

Yang Xianhui and Fu Yuan intend to start families and have children, their hearts divided by other pursuits — no outsider can stop them.

But as for Lin Yu, I think it would be a pity if she gave up,” Your Highness Chu Jinling remarked, standing atop Wangjiang Tower, looking thoughtfully at the training ground below.

Ye Hongru didn’t know what solution Chu Jinling might come up with, but when Chu Jinling deliberately let out news that he was visiting Wangjiang Tower, Lin Yu rushed over, running as fast as a horse to meet him.

Chu Jinling appraised her from head to toe. She was no longer wearing a black combat outfit; instead, she had changed into a red peach blossom dress. Her features weren’t particularly striking, but her eyes were bright.

Barely enough to qualify as a young lady with delicate and attractive features.

Chu Jinling exchanged a few greetings, and Lin Yu answered them blushingly.

Ye Hongru observed from the side, even as an outsider he could clearly see Lin Yu’s feelings for Chu Jinling. He already felt disappointed in Lin Yu, but now his disappointment layered upon itself!

Lin Yu’s standing — let alone marrying Chu Jinling — wasn’t even fit to become a maid at the prince’s mansion!

Even the stable hands at the prince’s mansion were locals of Jiang Du City!

She…

“Ah.” Ye Hongru sighed deeply, resting his head in his hands, his heart heavy with sorrow.

He wasn’t paying attention to what Lin Yu and Chu Jinling were talking about. When Chu Jinling stood up and Ye Hongru hurried to see him off, he suddenly heard Lin Yu shyly say, “Your Highness, do you truly wish to take me into your mansion to serve?”

Ye Hongru’s eyes widened. “What?! Your Highness, are you… taking Lin Yu under your wing?”

He almost bit his tongue in sheer shock!

How could Chu Jinling do such a thing!

Wasn’t his true love supposed to be Lin Sisi, the great general?

Hadn’t he vowed to not marry in this lifetime and to love only her?

Why did he suddenly turn around and take Lin Yu away?

Chu Jinling did not offer Ye Hongru any explanation; he only smiled and said, “I’ll take her back. You needn’t inform Great General Lin.”

Ye Hongru snapped out of his shock, watching as Chu Jinling took Lin Yu away, feeling nothing but helplessness and overwhelming anger!

Rushing into a tavern, he drank copiously to vent his frustration, smashing wine jars violently. The sound was so loud the commotion could be heard clearly downstairs.

Saint Ruan and Lin Sisi, who had gone there to enjoy the signature Lion’s Head meatballs, were startled by the noise.

After learning that Ye Hongru was in the upstairs private booth, Lin Sisi frowned as she held her chopsticks and asked, “What’s wrong with him? Why is he so furious?”

She had spent considerable time on the battlefield with Ye Hongru and knew he was an exceptionally temperate young general — understanding, kindhearted, and ever so gentle.

What could possibly push him to the point of such rage?

“Let’s not bother with him! Focus on the Lion’s Head!”

Saint Ruan was entirely uninterested in Ye Hongru’s predicament!

Lin Sisi had been recovering from her injuries in a secluded courtyard for quite some time, and Saint Ruan hadn’t left her side. It had been ages since they had gone out to enjoy a good meal.

Since Lin Sisi was treating him to dinner, he wasn’t planning to hold back!

After some thought, Lin Sisi still decided to go upstairs to check on Ye Hongru.

Ye Hongru’s hair was disheveled as he lay drunkenly sprawled on the table, tearfully lamenting, “General Lin! You sacrificed yourself for your country, gave everything for righteousness — such a heroically tragic end! But this world has betrayed you! They’ve all forgotten you!

They’ve all forsaken you!”

Ye Hongru took another swig of wine and broke down in tears, sobbing bitterly!

There was no one who remembered more vividly than him Lin Sisi’s indomitable resolve on the battlefield!

No one remembered her anymore, no one followed in her footsteps!

His heart was filled with unbearable anguish!

Lin Sisi stood outside the door, hearing Ye Hongru’s sobs. Initially, she thought it wouldn’t be appropriate to enter in such a moment, but his heartfelt grief and the fact he was crying for her broke her resolve — she finally stepped inside.

“General Ye.”

Lin Sisi’s strange, gentle voice rang out.

Ye Hongru instinctively felt disgust and was about to throw a wine cup at her to drive her away.

But as his eyes fell on Lin Sisi’s figure, even with her face obscured by a veil, her presence alone commanded an undeniable aura, making him halt.

Ye Hongru wiped away his tears, put down the wine cup, and politely cupped his hands, “Miss Chu, forgive me for the display.”

“I was presumptuous,” Lin Sisi said in a delicate yet discordantly assertive tone, “The deceased have passed. General Lin’s spirit in heaven would not wish for you to grieve so deeply for her!

Back then when she saved you, it wasn’t to have you cry for her in return.”

Ye Hongru’s face turned red with shame, “I’ve failed General Lin’s expectations! I simply can’t stand how, just in these two short years, everyone has forgotten her!

She was so heroic, a pillar of national strength who sacrificed herself for the country and the people!

Yet not only do the commonfolk no longer sing her praises, but even His Highness, the King of Ling, has taken another woman back to his mansion…”
