Chapter 828: Chapter 828: Driven to Distraction
When Nanny Gong returned to Chunhui Hall, Song Ci was surrounded by Song Zhiyu and the others, receiving their expressions of concern and sympathy. After all, the old ladyâs fright had scared everyone.
Seeing her return, Song Ci asked, "Have you brought them over?"
Nanny Gong curtsied and reported, "They have been properly settled. They are staying in the west wing of Plum Garden, and everything has been well taken care of."
"Weâll talk about it later. Xiao Man, brew a bowl of cool tea for your nanny; the weather is getting hotter, and sheâs been running around, lest her throat gets all smoky," Song Ci instructed the maid beside her.
Nanny Gong felt comforted in her heart and respectfully thanked them before standing aside to serve.
Song Zhiyu said, "That third brother is really something. I used to think he had a clear conscience, but now, as he grows older, he seems to be regressing. Itâs not like he doesnât have his own legitimate sons; why would he need to pursue making an illegitimate one legitimate? Where does this leave Weiâer and her siblings? Truly foolish."
Getting more agitated, he added, "Them, as a couple, they donât count as stirring trouble by themselves, but also trouble mother. If something really happens to you, thereâs no need for eldest brother to get involved. The Commandery Princess and I would have no problem tearing them apart."
"Fourth brother!" Song Ci reprimanded, "What kind of talk is that? They are also your brother and sister-in-law. Donât you have any sense of propriety?"
Song Zhiyu pursed his lips, "Son is just upset, isnât he? I was scared half to death."
"Even so, you shouldnât speak that way. Thereâs zero respect. So just because youâve become the Commandery Princessâs husband, does that mean you can disregard your elders?" Song Ci glared at him, "You are a father now; be a good example for your son. Learning to disrespect elders is certainly not good."
Song Zhiyu was somewhat unconvinced and let out a light snort.
Mrs. Jiang, seeing the situation, tried to mediate, "Mother, fourth brother was just caught up in the moment with his temper; concern leads to confusion. Please forgive him this once. In fact, not only fourth brother, but even I got quite scared when I heard the news. Thankfully, you are alright."
Song Ci said, "That doesnât mean you can just say anything, and heâs your half-brother." She glared at Song Zhiyu and then asked Mrs. Jiang, "Did you disturb your eldest sister-in-law?"
"I heard that mother was only frightened for a moment, so I didnât disturb eldest sister-in-law, but I guess it canât be hidden for long," Jiang replied.
Just as she finished speaking, a maid announced that Madamâs sedan chair had arrived.
Song Ci felt a headache coming on.
Madam was assisted by two strong servants as she walked in. As soon as she entered the door, she hurriedly asked, "Mother, are you alright? Did you call for a mansion doctor? Where is Doctor Lin?"
"I am fine, nothing to worry about. Youâre all making a fuss; it was just some phlegm clogging my throat. But you, with your big belly, shouldnât rush over here. What if you get hurt?" Song Ci teased.
Seeing her complexion was fair and her words were clear and logical, Madam felt relieved and said, "As long as youâre fine. I heard you werenât feeling well and it really scared your daughter-in-law."
"Now that youâve all seen me, donât just stand around here. Go busy yourselves with whatever you need to do."
Song Zhiyu said, "I will stay here with mother."
"Wow, the super dad can actually bear leaving his son unattended?"
"He is asleep; once asleep, it will likely be for an hour or two."
Hearing this, Song Ci simply let him be, sending her two daughters-in-law away. There was nothing major happening anyway, no need to make it seem like she was dying, which would be annoying.
Madam had just arrived, so she wouldnât leave immediately. Ultimately, she stayed with Song Ci for a while, gleaning some insight into the cause and effect of the situation before departing with Mrs. Jiang.
Once outside, Madamâs face sank: "The third oneâs actions are truly excessive."
