Chapter 149: Chapter 149: Arranging Animals to Observe in Secret
Renee Jennings frowned slightly. "Bubbles, are you sure Lanaās boyfriendās name is Hank?"
Bubbles was very serious. "Iām sure. Thatās what Lana always called him."
It then placed a paw on Renee and asked excitedly, "Renee, have you found Lana?"
Renee saw the expectation written all over its furry face. She pursed her lips and said softly, "Not yet. We suspect her disappearance is related to her boyfriend, so we came to ask you about it."
"Ask away," Bubbles meowed eagerly. "Iāll tell you everything I know!"
A sudden thought struck Renee. She called Sawyer and asked her to find a picture of Herbert Lee.
Sawyer was quick. Just two minutes later, Renee received a photo of Herbert Lee.
He was wearing a gray suit and glasses, looking refined and gentlemanly.
Renee showed the photo to Bubbles. "Is this Lanaās boyfriend?"
Bubbles stared intently at the phone screen for a long moment before nodding furiously. "Thatās him! Thatās him! Heās Lanaās boyfriend!"
"Heās Hank?"
"Yes!"
Renee made a mental note of this and continued, "When Lana and Hank left for their trip, did they say where they were going?"
"Let me think." Bubbles tried hard to recall what had happened over two months ago.
By the time Michelle Fuller had picked out a little suit for the cat to wear, it still hadnāt remembered where Lana and Hank had gone.
Bubbles grew agitated and tapped its own head with its little paw. āWhy are you so dumb? Why is your memory so bad! Come on, remember, you stupid brain!ā
Seeing this, Renee quickly stopped it, her voice gentle and soothing. "Itās okay, Bubbles. Itās all right if you really canāt remember."
"But if I canāt remember, Lana wonāt be able to come back!" Bubbles was filled with self-blame.
"Weāll think of another way." Renee gently stroked its head. "Itās not your fault you canāt remember. Cheer up."
Before leaving, she asked Michelle Fuller to keep an eye on Bubblesās mood for the day, and maybe take him out for a walk.
"Arenāt you staying for lunch?" Michelle Fuller asked, frowning.
Renee shook her head. "No, I have other things to take care of."
"Okay, then." Michelle Fuller walked her to the parking lot and watched the red BMW drive away before reluctantly looking away.
āRenee is so busy these days.ā
**
Renee drove to the police station and told Henry Stark that Herbert Lee had gone by the name Hank with Elaine Rivers.
A few of them sat in the conference room analyzing the case, all wearing the same serious expressions.
"Thereās definitely something wrong with Herbert Lee," Kyle Morgan stated unequivocally.
"Why wouldnāt he let Elaine Rivers know his real name?" Zachary Conway mused, rubbing his chin. "Whatās he afraid of?"
Reneeās fair face was grave. "If heās a human trafficker, then his current girlfriend is also in danger."
"Exactly," Sawyer agreed with a nod. "That girl is Herbert Leeās next target."
"Should I go and sound out his girlfriend?" Levi Hollis suggested.
But Henry Stark disagreed. His eyes were sharp, his voice low and cold. "Weād risk spooking him."
"Then what should we do?" Kyle Morgan asked earnestly.
Henry Stark said coolly, "Weāll start with covert surveillance."
As soon as he said that, Kyle Morgan and the others all sat up straight, ready for their assignments.
Henry Stark turned his head toward Renee.
Meeting his gaze, Renee blinked and hesitantly pointed to herself. "Are you asking me to do it?"
Kyle Morgan and the others looked just as confused.
"Not you." A hint of a smile touched Henry Starkās stern face. "I want you to arrange for animal surveillance."
Understanding finally dawned on everyone.
Kyle Morgan slapped his thigh. "The Chief is the Chief for a reason," he exclaimed. "And here we are, still thinking about traditional investigation methods..."
"Thatās enough," Henry Stark cut off his brown-nosing, saying coolly, "Letās discuss what kind of animal would be most suitable for observing Herbert Lee."
**
Reneeās photo with the tiger brothers had blown up online. The likes had already surpassed two million, and her follower count had risen to three million.
Many fans were clamoring in the comments, pointing out that she hadnāt streamed in days and that breaking three million followers called for some kind of fan reward.
While eating, Renee diligently replied to a private message: "For a fan reward, do you mean like a cash prize giveaway?"
An anonymous user replied: "NO! The fan reward we want is a! LIVE! STREAM!"
āI should just leave them on read,ā Renee thought.
āI probably wonāt have time to stream for the next few days.ā
In the end, Renee could only promise her followers that she would stream, but she wasnāt sure when. She said sheād post an update beforehand to let everyone know.
"All done?" Henry Stark asked as he walked into the breakroom, seeing Renee putting the lid on her food container.
"Yep." Renee nodded and tossed the container into the trash. "Iāll head home and wait for updates, then."
Henry Stark smiled and agreed. "Okay. Thanks for your help today."
Renee said goodbye to the others and left the police station.
Back at Blissborne Garden, she surveyed her furry children at home and finally decided to give Blueberry the important mission.
"What? You want me to go eavesdrop on a couple?" The British Blueās eyes sparkled, and he seemed thrilled.
Renee: "..."
She said hesitantly, "Blueberry, your excitement is making me a little nervous..."
Blueberryās furry face immediately took on a serious expression. "Iām very dependable, Renee, donāt you worry. I promise Iāll tell you everything I overhear!"
"Okay, Iāll trust you, then." After she spoke, Renee noticed Cici and Bella were both staring at her. "What is it?"
Cici meowed sadly. "Renee, why donāt you let me go? Do you think Iām too dumb?"
"Me too!" Bella added, looking hurt.
Seeing this, Blueberry chimed in to console them. "All right, all right, you two. Stop making a fuss. Renee must have her reasons for this. Maybe itāll be your turn next time."
"Itās because Blueberry is a pet cat," Renee explained gently. "Heās less likely to arouse suspicion when watching the bad guy. Plus, some girls can be scared of dogs."
"Oh, so thatās why," Bella said, her hurt expression finally fading.
Cici blinked her moist eyes. "So itās not because Iām too dumb?"
Renee stroked her head, her tone gentle. "Of course not. Cici is very clever. How could you possibly be dumb?"
Her words worked like a charm. Cici leaped into her arms and nuzzled against her, her mood instantly lifting. "Renee said Iām smart! Did you guys hear that?"
"We heard!" Pippi, the houseguest, was the first to reply.
Bella looked at Renee again, her expression turning pouty. "Renee, you didnāt compliment me."
"Iāll praise you right now!" Renee said quickly. "Bella is very smart too, and Pippi as well. Youāre all such smart, good babies."
With the praise spread evenly, all the furry children were happy.
Just as Renee was about to breathe a sigh of relief, the slider in the terrarium piped up, unconvinced, "Isnāt this turtle smart, too?"
