Chapter 245: Chapter 245: Bringing Different Girls Home
"Was I talking to you?" Michelle Shepherd stormed toward Michelle Fuller in her high heels. "Does this have anything to do with you?"
Renee Jennings pulled Michelle Fuller behind her, frowning at the other woman.
Michelle Shepherd stared at her, her gaze laced with poison. "My brother was definitely killed by you. Youâre a murderer!"
"Stop your baseless accusations!" Michelle Fuller peeked out from behind Renee, furious. "Did you see it happen? How dare you make things up? Believe it or not, I can sue you for defamation!"
Michelle Shepherd was utterly infuriated. She shot her hand out. "Iâm going to tear that filthy mouth of yours apart!"
Renee Jennings intercepted her hand mid-air, her voice calm and composed. "Miss Shepherd, I understand how you feel after losing a loved one, but you canât just slander people. Evan Shepherdâs death has nothing to do with me."
With that, she released her hand.
"Nothing to do with you?" Michelle Shepherd suddenly raised both hands and shoved her hard. "Why donât you just admit you killed him?"
Seeing this, Sawyer quickly stepped forward to block her. "Ms. Shepherd, please calm down."
"How can you be so unreasonable? You dare to get physical with the police right here!" Michelle Fuller quickly steadied Renee Jennings, her brow furrowed.
"How can I calm down?" Michelle Shepherd broke down crying. "My brother is dead, and his murderer is right in front of me!"
"The truth hasnât been determined yet," Sawyer said helplessly. "We wonât let any culprit escape, but by the same token, we canât frame an innocent person. The medical examiner currently estimates your brotherâs time of death was ten oâclock last night. Renee Jennings was live-streaming at that time. She has an alibi."
"As for your brotherâs exact cause of death, weâll have to wait for the medical examinerâs autopsy to be certain."
"An autopsy?" Michelle Shepherd murmured, her cries heart-wrenching. "Are you trying to make sure my brotherâs body isnât even left whole?"
Her body went limp and she started to fall. Sawyer caught her just in time and explained, "After the autopsy is complete, the medical examiner will suture and prepare the body."
"I donât care, I donât agree!" Michelle Shepherdâs voice was shrill. "My brother has already suffered so much! I canât let you hurt him again!"
Sawyer was speechless.
She sighed to herself. "Ms. Shepherd, please reconsider."
"Isnât the murderer right here?" Michelle Shepherd pointed at Renee Jennings. "Hurry up and arrest her!"
Sawyer said, "Ms. Shepherd, without concrete evidence that Renee Jennings is the murderer, we cannot arrest her."
Michelle Shepherd quickly took out her phone, opened her WeChat chat history, and showed it to her. "Officer, look at the chat history between me and my brother. He said Renee Jennings came to his house and beat him up. She must have beaten him to death!"
Sawyer really didnât know how to communicate with her, so she decided to just stop talking.
"Look!" Michelle Shepherdâs face was a mask of urgency.
Sawyer was about to say something when she caught a glimpse of Henry Stark out of the corner of her eye. She quickly said, "If you have something to say, tell it to our captain."
Michelle Shepherdâs eyes darted over and landed on Henry Stark. She asked anxiously, "Are you the captain?"
Henry Stark nodded. "And you are?"
"Iâm Evan Shepherdâs sister, Michelle Shepherd." Michelle Shepherd grabbed Henry Starkâs sleeve with one hand and pointed at Renee Jennings with the other. "Officer, this woman is the one who killed my brother. Quick, put her in handcuffs and arrest her!"
Henry Starkâs dark brows furrowed slightly. He said in a deep voice, "If it werenât for Renee Jennings, your brotherâs body might have rotted before anyone found it."
Michelle Shepherd frowned. "What... what do you mean?"
Henry Stark said, "Your brother, Evan Shepherd, owed a debt and didnât pay it back. Today, Renee Jennings asked us to accompany her to find your brother and persuade him to promptly repay the three-million-yuan debt. We discovered the body together. The specific cause of death is still under investigation."
"Nonsense!" Michelle Shepherd was extremely agitated. "How could my brother owe her three million? Thatâs impossible!"
Renee Jennings sighed to herself. âLooks like thereâs no chance of getting that three million back.â
âBut how did Evan Shepherd just die so inexplicably?â
Just as Renee Jennings was lost in thought, she suddenly heard someone call her name.
"Renee?"
She snapped out of her thoughts and looked toward the source of the voice. "Mrs. Forrest."
Mrs. Forrest walked to her side, her elderly face filled with concern. "Crowe said she saw you just now, and I told her she must have been mistaken. Why are you here?"
Before Renee Jennings could say anything, Michelle Shepherd started shouting, "Sheâs here to kill people! Sheâs the one who murdered my brother!"
"Ms. Shepherd, considering youâve just lost a loved one, Iâll let it slide for now." If Michelle Shepherd had dared to speak like that at any other time, Renee Jennings definitely wouldnât have let it go so easily.
She took Mrs. Forrestâs arm and started walking toward her apartment, calling out softly, "Michelle."
Michelle Fuller immediately understood and followed them.
"Officer, sheâs trying to run away! Hurry up and catch her!" Michelle Shepherd urged.
Henry Stark frowned and spoke as gently as he could, "Ms. Shepherd, your brotherâs body is already in the coronerâs van. Please come with us to the station to give a statement."
"I want to see my brother!" Michelle Shepherdâs eyes reddened again. "Heâs the only brother I have..."
Renee Jennings and Michelle Fuller entered Mrs. Forrestâs apartment. Nini immediately came over, pawing at her pant leg and saying, "Renee, youâre here! Iâm so happy to see you again so soon."
"Nini." Renee Jennings bent down and scooped it into her arms, gently stroking its back. "Did you miss me?"
Nini nodded vigorously. "Yes! So, so much!"
Renee Jennings smiled. "Such a good girl."
Seeing her so relaxed, Mrs. Forrestâs own anxious heart settled a bit. "Renee, I heard someone on this floor passed away, is that right?"
"Yes." Renee Jennings nodded. "The resident of 1903."
"1903?" Mrs. Forrest thought for a moment, then asked with a frown, "Was it a young man?"
"Did you know him, Mrs. Forrest?"
"I saw him a few times in the elevator. He was always bringing different girls home."
"And recently?"
"Recently... no, I havenât." Mrs. Forrest shook her head.
Renee Jennings reached out and patted her shoulder gently. "The case is still under investigation. Try not to go out much for the next few days."
Mrs. Forrest nodded. "I will."
"Nini, you need to keep Grandma company, okay?" Renee Jennings ruffled the little oneâs head and passed it into Mrs. Forrestâs arms. "Mrs. Forrest, I still have things to do, so Iâll be going now."
"Alright." Mrs. Forrest added worriedly, "Be safe."
Renee Jennings smiled. "Donât worry."
Michelle Fuller also said her goodbyes and returned to the hallway with Renee Jennings.
Michelle Shepherd had been taken to the station to give her statement, and the on-site investigation was also finished. Zachary Conway and Sawyer had been assigned to wait there for them.
Seeing the two of them come out, Sawyer took two steps forward and said in a low voice, "Renee Jennings, the chief wants you to go inside and look for clues."
Looking at the gloves she was offered, Renee Jennings didnât take them immediately. She hesitated, "Shouldnât I recuse myself to avoid suspicion?"
Sawyer was stunned for a few seconds, then turned to look at Zachary Conway, who spoke up. "Donât you have an alibi?"
"I understand." Renee Jennings took the gloves.
Sawyer lifted the police tape, and she and Renee entered Evan Shepherdâs home together.
