Chapter 308: Chapter 308: The Only Niece
Zoe Morgan snapped back to reality and met Faye Wyattâs concerned gaze. She shook her head gently. "Iâm fine, donât worry about me."
"Okay." Faye Wyatt gave a slight nod. "Let me know if you donât feel well."
"I know." Zoe Morgan smiled, sneaking a glance at Renee Jennings from the corner of her eye. She saw Renee sitting there calmly.
"Renee, what would you like to eat?" Faye Wyatt moved closer to Renee Jennings with the menu. "The Wellington Steak here is delicious, and the Black Truffle Foie Gras is amazing too. You should try them..."
Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow slightly and nodded. "Sounds good. If Faye says itâs delicious, it must be top-notch."
"Oh!" Faye Wyattâs face lit up when she heard that. "If you donât like it, Iâll take you to another place next time."
"Okay," Renee Jennings said with a bright smile. "Iâm already starting to look forward to it."
Faye Wyatt snapped her fingers. "Just for saying that, Iâm taking you to try another place next time, regardless of whether you like the food here or not."
Worried that Zoe Morgan might feel left out, she added, "Vivi, you have to come next time, too."
After she spoke, however, she noticed Zoe staring blankly at Renee Jennings.
Faye Wyatt found it strange and frowned almost imperceptibly.
âWhatâs gotten into Vivi today? She seems completely out of it.â
After they ordered, Faye Wyatt wanted to go to the restroom and asked Renee Jennings first.
"I donât need to," Renee Jennings said softly.
"Alrighty," Faye Wyatt replied, then turned to Zoe Morgan. "Vivi, want to come with me to the restroom?"
Zoe Morgan heard her this time and stood up. "Letâs go."
On the way to the restroom, Faye Wyatt linked arms with her friend and asked suspiciously, "Vivi, whatâs with you today? You keep spacing out, and you were staring at Renee."
"I... I was?" Zoe Morganâs eyelashes fluttered.
"You were," Faye Wyatt said helplessly. "Donât scare Renee. She might get the wrong idea and think you donât like her."
Zoe Morgan lowered her gaze and explained in a low voice, "Itâs just that... she really reminds me of my mom when she was young."
"Really?" Faye Wyatt was surprised. "What a coincidence."
"Yeah," Zoe Morgan replied wistfully.
"Oh, right, didnât you say you found your long-lost niece?" Faye Wyatt suddenly remembered. "Have you brought her home yet?"
Zoe Morgan whipped her head around to look at her.
Faye Wyatt was a little taken aback by her reaction and asked, confused, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Itâs nothing." Zoe Morgan was unsettled, her brow furrowed. "We havenât brought her home."
"Why not?" A puzzled look appeared on Faye Wyattâs face. "You already found her, why havenât you brought her home?"
Zoe Morgan didnât want to talk about it and gave a vague reply, "Itâs too complicated. I canât explain it in just a few words. Iâll find some time to tell you about it later."
"Fair enough." Faye Wyatt nodded and changed the subject. "So, what do you think? Reneeâs pretty, right?"
They had reached the restroom. Zoe Morgan paused for a second, as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she just agreed, "She is."
"I donât know why, but I just really like her," Faye Wyatt said before stepping into a stall.
Zoe Morgan stood in front of the sinks, staring blankly at her reflection in the mirror, recalling the information she had dug up on Renee Jennings.
âWasnât she supposed to be some vain girl who pretends to be a socialite and hooks up with rich heirs?â
âThat doesnât sound anything like the "animal consultant Renee" Faye was talking about...â
Faye Wyatt came out of the restroom and walked over to her. As she washed her hands, she said, "Vivi, did you know? Renee is the first person to ever refuse a gift from me. Itâs so rare. Everyone else just wishes Iâd give them more."
"Is that so," Zoe Morgan said.
Noticing her lack of enthusiasm, Faye Wyatt dropped the subject and asked with a touch of concern, "Vivi, are you missing Aunt Sinclair?"
"I am." Zoe Morgan went along with it. "Faye, I donât really have an appetite. I think Iâll head out instead of eating with you guys."
"Youâre leaving already?" Faye Wyatt asked worriedly. "You havenât even had dinner yet. Why not eat a little before you go?"
Zoe Morgan shook her head gently. "No, thanks. I canât eat. You two go ahead."
"Alright then." Faye Wyatt didnât press her. "Be careful on your way home."
Zoe Morgan returned to the booth, picked up her bag, and looked at Renee Jennings.
Perhaps sensing her gaze, Renee Jennings, who had been looking at her phone, lifted her eyes to meet Zoeâs.
Her gaze fell on the bag in Zoeâs hand, and she raised an eyebrow slightly.
Zoe Morganâs fingers tightened on her bag, and she forced the words out. "Iâm leaving now. Enjoy your meal."
Renee Jennings gave a slight nod, replying nonchalantly, "Take care."
Zoe Morgan was speechless.
âDoes she know something?â
âLogically, when someone youâre having dinner with leaves before even eating, shouldnât you at least show some concern? Ask them to stay?â
"Vivi, Iâll walk you out," Faye Wyatt said, taking her arm.
Suddenly, Zoe Morgan felt a heavy lump form in her chest, as if it were stuffed with cotton.
She took a deep breath and walked away.
Faye Wyatt walked her to the door and returned to find the table already laden with an array of delectable dishes.
"Renee, should we take a selfie before we start eating?"
"Sure," Renee Jennings agreed, posing for a few photos.
Halfway through the meal, Faye Wyatt looked at Renee Jennings, her phone in hand and a hopeful glint in her almond-shaped eyes. "Renee, would you mind if I posted our picture on my Moments?"
"Why would I mind?" Renee Jennings arched an eyebrow with a smile. "Iâd be thrilled to be featured on a pretty ladyâs Moments feed."
"Thatâs wonderful," Faye Wyatt said, overjoyed. She looked down at her phone to edit the post. "Done."
Renee Jennings picked up her phone. "I want to be the first to like it."
A smile spread across her lips as she read Faye Wyattâs caption.
[Faye Wyatt: A beautiful meal with a beautiful friend.]
The moment she posted it, the likes started pouring in.
Yvonne Morgan had just gotten home from dinner with friends when she opened her Moments and saw Faye Wyattâs post. Her phone slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor.
âFaye Wyatt and Renee Jennings?â
âHow do they know each other?â
To be considerate of Zoe Morganâs feelings, Faye Wyatt had also included a picture of the two of them together.
Yvonne Morgan picked up her phone. When she saw the photo of Faye Wyatt and Zoe Morgan, her face went pale, and her fingers tightened around the phone until her knuckles turned white.
She gritted her teeth, her eyes filled with fury.
âDid Zoe Morgan take Renee Jennings to have dinner with Faye Wyatt?â
âThat damn woman!â
âDidnât Zoe Morgan swear up and down that no matter what happened, I would always be her only niece?â
âSo what is this now?â
âZoe Morgan, you hypocrite!â
Yvonne Morgan was seething with anger, but she suppressed her emotions, not daring to lash out at Zoe Morgan.
Yvonne Morgan wasnât the only one who saw Faye Wyattâs post. Aria Sinclair saw it too.
She stared at Renee Jennings in the photo, stunned for a long moment.
When she finally saw the photo of Zoe Morgan, Aria Sinclairâs brow furrowed, and a strange feeling crept into her heart.
âVivi is there too... Could she be the one who introduced Renee to Faye?â
âBut when did she get in touch with Renee Jennings?â
