Chapter 367: Chapter 367: The Strange Woman Who Took Away Your Sister
As they entered the Kindred Care Center, people occasionally greeted Lana Yardley.
"President Langley."
"President Langley."
"..."
Seeing this, Kyle Morgan asked curiously, "Miss Yardley, are you the owner of this care center?"
"No," Lana Yardley replied coldly.
She led Kyle Morgan to the second floor and into a quiet room filled with many cribs.
There was a small baby in almost every crib.
Lana Yardley crossed her arms and said nonchalantly, "Theyâre all high-quality goods. See if any of them catch your eye."
"Why are they all so quiet?" Kyle Morgan frowned slightly, feeling that something was wrong. "This is a little strange."
So many babies, yet all of them were silent. Not a single one was crying.
âSomethingâs wrong. Somethingâs very wrong.â
Lana Yardley sneered, as if mocking his ignorance. "Whatâs so strange about it? You just have to feed them some sleeping pills."
Kyle Morgan was speechless.
He suddenly clenched his fists, unable to stop himself from cursing inwardly: âThese monsters!â
"Do the parents know about this?" Kyle Morgan asked.
Lana Yardley instantly looked exasperated. "And let the parents find out? Of course not. Itâs obviously done in secret."
Kyle Morgan feigned indifference with an "Oh."
He moved through the room, occasionally glancing at the small, sleeping infants who had been forced into slumber.
"Miss Yardley, if I pick one, can I just take it with me?" Kyle Morgan asked, looking up at her.
Lana Yardley replied, "Thatâs not how it works. The child canât go missing from the care center."
Kyle Morgan asked, "Then how do we do it?"
"Just tell me which one you want," Lana Yardley said, growing impatient. "Weâll handle the rest."
"Miss Yardley, youâre so beautiful, but your temper isnât nearly as lovely," Kyle Morgan joked.
Lana Yardley scoffed. "Whatâs it to you? Hurry up and pick. Iâm busy."
"Hey, Iâm busy too, you know," Kyle Morgan said, feigning annoyance. "You give me a bunch of sleeping babies to choose from. I donât even know what they look like with their eyes open. I at least have to pick one that looks like me, right? To avoid making the old man suspicious."
Lana Yardley was speechless.
Kyle Morgan raised a hand to rub his chin. "How about this? Iâll close my eyes, and you, Miss Yardley, can help me pick one that looks like me."
"Fine," Lana Yardley agreed with a nod.
She pointed randomly at one. "That one. Looks just like you."
"Alright then." Kyle Morgan glanced in the direction she was pointing. "This one it is. When can I have it?"
Lana Yardley said coolly, "Weâll talk about it outside."
The two left the Kindred Care Center and returned to the coffee shop across the street.
Lana Yardley asked him, "When do you want it?"
Kyle Morgan smiled. "The sooner, the better, of course."
Lana Yardley tapped on her phone a few times. "Next Friday. You pay first, then we deliver."
"Sounds good," Kyle Morgan nodded.
Just before leaving, he exclaimed, "Ah! My phoneâs dead!"
Lana Yardley ignored him and walked toward the exit on her own.
"Miss Yardley, could I borrow your phone to make a call?" Kyle Morgan stepped forward to block her path. "I need to call my driver to come pick me up."
"Thatâs not convenient," Lana Yardley refused.
"How about this? Iâll recite the number, and you dial it for me?"
Lana Yardley hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded. "Fine. Youâre such a pain. Whatâs the number?"
"185..."
As Lana Yardley finished typing the number and made the call, Kyle Morgan, seeing she was distracted, snatched her phone and ran out of the coffee shop.
Lana Yardleyâs expression changed, her eyes instantly turning sharp. She sprinted after him. "Stop! Give me back my phone!"
Kyle Morgan slowed his pace, feeling a hand grab his shoulder from behind.
"Give me the phone," Lana Yardley said in a low voice.
Kyle Morgan turned around with a playful grin. "Miss Yardley, donât be so serious. I was just messing with you."
With that, he held the phone out to her.
"Was that fun?" Lana Yardleyâs face was ashen as she reached for the phone.
The moment her fingers touched the phone, a sudden cold clamped around her wrist. A silver handcuff was now locked onto her arm.
Her pupils contracted as she jerked her head up.
Sawyerâs expression was cold and severe as she said, enunciating every word, "Lana Yardley, youâre under arrest."
"You..." Lana Yardley stared at Kyle Morgan in disbelief. "Youâre a cop?"
"And youâre a monster," Kyle Morgan replied, his face devoid of emotion.
Lana Yardley tried to snatch the phone back from him, but Kyle Morgan placed it directly into an evidence bag.
As she was pushed into the police car, Lana Yardley had a bad feeling. With her phone confiscated, she had no way of warning anyone else.
Sitting in the interrogation room at the police station, Lana Yardley deeply regretted not refusing Lydia Lawson back then.
"Sawyer." Renee Jennings came over to Sawyerâs cubicle and rested a hand on her shoulder, asking with a smile, "Want to get some bubble tea?"
Sawyer snapped out of her daze and looked up at the warm, smiling face, then smiled herself. "Yeah, my treat."
"Okay." Renee Jennings nodded, and the two left side by side.
Kyle Morgan watched them go, rubbing his chin. "Looks like Sawyer and Renee Jennings are keeping a secret from us."
Zachary Conway copied him, rubbing his chin as well. "I wonder if theyâll bring me back a taro pearl milk tea with less ice and 30% sugar."
Levi Hollis asked, "What kind of grown man orders less ice?"
Zachary Conway replied, "I donât like it too cold."
Kyle Morgan said, "...I give up. Is that really the point?"
Renee Jennings and Sawyer were waiting at a crosswalk for the light to change. Thirty-four seconds left.
"Sawyer, whatâs wrong?" Renee Jennings asked, tilting her head.
Ever since Lana Yardleyâs arrest, Sawyer had seemed troubled. She had just been sitting at her desk, staring into space.
"Renee." Sawyer met her concerned gaze, a warmth spreading in her chest. She said softly, "I feel like Lana Yardley looks really familiar."
"Familiar..." Renee Jennings blinked, then quickly realized. "Does she look like the strange woman who took your sister?"
Sawyer nodded slowly.
The light had already turned green, but neither of them moved.
Sawyer frowned, lost in thought. "I was eight years old then, and my sister was three. Sixteen years have passed, but Iâll never forget that face."
"But she looks too young. Back then, that woman was at least in her twenties. This Lana Yardley only looks like sheâs in her thirties."
"Letâs go back and pull up her file," Renee Jennings said, leading her back the way they came. "Even though itâs been sixteen years, Lana Yardley has had a lot of cosmetic work done. Her actual age is probably much older."
Kyle Morgan saw them return and asked curiously, "Werenât you guys going to get bubble tea? Why are you back so soon?"
"Weâll get it later," Renee Jennings said. "Pull up Lana Yardleyâs identification information."
"Okay." Kyle Morgan nodded while working on the computer.
Lana Yardleyâs information quickly appeared on the screen. The age field read: 45 years old.
Renee Jenningsâs eyes narrowed slightly. "Sixteen years ago, Lana Yardley was twenty-nine."
"Twenty-nine..." Sawyer murmured. "Then itâs very likely it was her!"
Renee Jennings said, "Kai, pull up Lana Yardleyâs old ID photos."
"On it," Kyle Morgan replied, immediately getting to work.
