Chapter 452: Chapter 452: The Person She Cheated With
When Renee Jennings heard that Diego had spent the whole night crying under his blanket, a look of surprise crossed her face. "You really cried the entire night?"
[Ahhh, youāre so handsome! How could you do something so pathetic?]
[So what happened after you cried? Did you break up?]
Before Diego could answer Renee Jenningsās question, a blue cat suddenly leaped onto his shoulder. "Coco can testify! He really cried for a long, long, long time!"
Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow slightly and smiled. "Coco, did you comfort him?"
"Nope," Coco said, shaking his little head. "He canāt understand me when I talk!"
"Okay, then," Renee Jennings said, turning back to Diego. "So, what did you do after you were done crying?"
Diego pulled Coco into his lap, seeming to relax a bit. "The next day, I ordered flowers, bought a ring, and went to wait for Lily Holt downstairs at her companyās dorm."
"You were planning to propose?" Renee Jennings asked.
[Are you serious, man? She cheated on you and you still wanted to propose? What were you thinking?]
[Actually, I think what Diego did was pretty smart.]
[His girlfriend was two-timing him and trying to give him the cold shoulder so heād be the one to break up with her. If he had just initiated the breakup, wouldnāt that have been exactly what she wanted?]
[Ooooh, so thatās what it was!!! It all makes sense now!!!]
Diego saw the bullet comments and suddenly felt a pang of guilt.
In truth, he hadnāt been thinking what the bullet comments suggested at all. He simply couldnāt let go of Lily Holt and wanted to give her one more chance. If she accepted his proposal, he was prepared to forgive her betrayal and let bygones be bygones.
That day, he texted Lily Holt and waited for her downstairs from her dorm, planning to catch her when she got off work.
But when quitting time came and went, Lily Holt was nowhere to be seen.
Diego waited all the way until eleven oāclock at night before he finally spotted Lily Holt. She was carrying a shopping bag from a luxury brand.
"Lily." Diego walked up to her, flowers in hand.
In the darkness, Lily Holt glanced at the people nearby, then grimaced and headed for a more secluded corner.
"Why are you still here?" Her voice was laced with impatience. "Didnāt I tell you I didnāt have time?"
"Lily," Diego said, offering her the roses. "I came to see you today for something important."
Lily Holt glanced at the flowers, then crossed her arms over her chest with no intention of taking them. "What is it? Spit it out. Itās late and I want to go rest."
Diego then pulled a diamond ring from his pocket. "Lily, Iāve thought about this for a long time. I hope youāll give me the chance to spend the rest of my life with you."
He dropped to one knee, looking up at her with a gaze full of love. "Lily, will you marry me?"
The look on Lily Holtās face was downright ugly.
She couldnāt understand it. She had been deliberately distant, cold, and dismissive toward him. Why wasnāt he taking the hint and breaking up with her? Why was he doing something like this instead?
Her brow furrowed. "Diego, can you not be so impulsive?"
"Lily, Iām not being impulsive," Diego said. "Iāve thought about this very seriously before proposing to you."
"Well, I donāt want to get married," Lily Holt snapped, annoyed. "Youāve thought about it seriously? I doubt it. If youād really thought about it, youād know that in your current situation, youāre in no position to get married."
"Do you think marriage is just about buying a bouquet and a ring?" Lily Holt scoffed. "Youāre so naive! You have no apartment, no car, and no money. What makes you think you can get married?"
A look of disdain filled her eyes, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Forget about an apartment or a car. You donāt even have a job right now."
"We can buy an apartment and a car," Diego said earnestly. "Lily, if you want them, I can take you to buy them right now."
"Oh, really?" Lily Holt felt he had to be joking. "Do you think itās funny to string me along like this?"
"Lily, Iām not stringing you along," Diego said, trying to explain his family situation. "My mother reunited with my maternal grandmother, and on the day they met, my grandma gave me five millionā"
"Enough, Diego Raines!" Lily Holt shouted, flying into a rage out of humiliation. "Stop treating me like an idiot!"
"Itās true," Diego insisted. He was about to pull out his phone to show her his bank balance as proof. "Lily, Iām not lying."
He took out his phone, but before he could even pull up his bank balance, Lily Holt angrily slapped it out of his hand.
CLATTERāthe roses, the ring, and the phone all fell to the ground. The phoneās screen instantly spiderwebbed with cracks.
The color drained from Diegoās face. He stared at Lily Holt in utter disbelief.
The Lily Holt he knew was a gentle girl who never threw tantrums.
Diego pressed his lips into a thin line and silently picked up his phone.
"Lily," he said, looking at her face. It suddenly seemed like he was looking at a stranger. "You donāt want to marry me, do you?"
"Thatās right!" Lily Holt took a deep breath and decided to just get it over with. "I donāt want to marry you, and I donāt want to date you anymore. Diego, letās break up."
"Break up? Are you sure?"
"Iām sure. And donāt ever bother me again!"
"Alright." Diego picked the ring and roses back up from the ground.
He gave Lily Holt one last look, then turned and walked away.
He tossed the roses into a trash can. As for the ringāit had cost over ten thousand, so heād have to think about what to do with it to not let the money go to waste.
Diego sighed softly. "So, thatās what happened. We broke up."
[Youāre seriously pathetic... To think you bought such an expensive ring to propose!]
[Thatās it? You didnāt even call her out for cheating on you?]
Diego shook his head. "Itās fine. I wanted to have a clean break."
To be honest, Renee Jennings didnāt know what to make of his failed proposal story. Whatever it was, it certainly didnāt sound "smart" like the audience thought.
She pursed her lips, then said gently, "Diego, things will get better from here."
"Yeah!" Diego nodded emphatically. "Thank you, streamer!"
[Diego, what did you say your girlfriendās name was? I want to confirm if sheās the same person Iām thinking of.]
[Key point: EX-girlfriend!]
"HappyGhost? What is it?" Diego asked, noticing the comment. "Do you know my ex-girlfriend? Her name is Lily Holt."
[Lily Holt??? Is she working in Zenvia now? As a teacher?]
[Whoa, whatās going on? Donāt tell me youāre the guy she was cheating with!]
[No! Iām probably the sister of the guy sheās cheating with!!!]
[Holy crap, the antidote is always within three steps of the poison! Sis, hurry up and tell your brother his girlfriend is a total scumbag!]
Diego said hesitantly, "HappyGhost just sent me a private message."
[Why a PM? Is there something you canāt say for all of us to hear?]
[Weāre all friends here! Sending a PM feels so distant!]
[Sorry, everyone. Even though my brother didnāt know what was going on, he still ended up becoming the āNumber Threeā in someone elseās relationship. As his sister, I want to protect my brotherās privacy!]
HappyGhost sounded like a sensible person. Since she wanted to protect her brotherās privacy, it was best to let the topic drop.
Renee Jennings said softly, "Diego, letās wrap it up here for now. I hope you find happiness every day."
"Okay, okay, thank you, streamer!" Diego sent three "Shining Fireworks" gifts and then logged off.
The audience, however, was left wanting more.
[I really wanna know if Ultra Broās ex is gonna get dumped!]
[Ultra Bro is a class act. If that were me, hmph!]
