Chapter 514: Chapter 514: Never Gave Dalton Jenson a Birthday Gift
Renee thought about the few pieces of clothing she had seen in Addie Suttonās closet.
The girl really did need new clothes.
"Of course," Zachary Conwayās voice held a hint of a smile. "One outfit isnāt enough. Buy several."
Hilary chimed in, "Right, get several. I want to buy her some, too."
"Thank you, Zeke and Hilary," Addie Sutton said earnestly. "Once I get a part-time job and get paid, Iāll buy presents for all of you."
"Alright." Reneeās lips curved into a slight smile. "Weāll look forward to it."
The group took Addie Sutton to pick out clothes at a fast-fashion store.
As Renee helped pick out clothes, her phone suddenly rang.
It was Rhea Dempsey.
Renee answered with a grin. "Rae, did you miss me?"
Rheaās amused voice came through the phone. "Iām doing fine. Itās Zane and Jasmine who miss you."
"Oh, really?" Renee laughed. "Put them on, then."
Rhea replied, "Iāve got you on speaker. You can just talk."
Renee raised an eyebrow, her voice softening. "Zane, Jasmine, your auntie misses you two very much. How about some cupcakes? I can have some sent over."
"Auntie, I saw the weather forecast! It said thereās going to be a typhoon in Lyris, with a huge storm!" Zaneās young but serious voice piped up.
"Thatās right, Auntie! You have to find a safe place to hide," Jasmine added worriedly. "I heard typhoons are really dangerous. They can blow people away and even knock down big trees!"
Their sweet, childish voices, soft as milk and honey, filled her with a fuzzy warmth. A smile spread across Reneeās face. "That does sound dangerous."
"It is!" Jasmineās voice was laced with urgency. "Auntie, have you found a safe place to hide yet?"
Renee said softly, "I have. Your auntie is in a very safe place right now. You donāt need to worry."
The two little ones breathed a sigh of relief at her words.
"Thatās good!"
"Iām so relieved!"
Renee chuckled. "Okay, Iām ordering the cupcakes to be sent over now."
Zane and Jasmine were delighted, thanking her in unison, "Thank you, Auntie!"
"Youāre welcome. Do you want anything else?"
"The cupcakes are enough!"
"Yeah, Auntie, donāt spend too much money."
Renee was amused and a little exasperated. "Alright, Iām going to order your cupcakes now. Iām hanging up, okay?"
"Stay safe, Auntie. Weāll wait for you to come home."
"Auntie, make sure you hide well! Bye-bye!"
After the two kids were done, Rheaās voice came back on the line. "So, a typhoonās hitting. I guess you wonāt be able to come back tomorrow?"
Renee replied, "Yeah, weāll have to stay here for a few more days."
"I wonder if youāll be back for your dadās birthday."
"Iāll definitely be back for that."
"Okay, good. Are you busy over there?"
"Not busy. Iām helping a young girl pick out some clothes right now."
"Okay, Iāll let you get back to it."
After hanging up, Renee ordered the cupcakes and scheduled a courier to pick them up.
She thought for a moment and added an order of french fries and other snacks.
Once that was done, Renee went back to watch Addie try on clothes.
"Ms. Jennings," Hilary said, sidling up to her. "I want to get a gift for you and Michelle, too. What would you like?"
"Sure," Renee said with a smile, raising an eyebrow. "I noticed your sunglasses earlier. Theyāre nice. Could you get me a pair?"
"Of course." Hilary nodded, then asked, "Besides sunglasses, is there anything else you want?"
āAfter all, the bag Renee had given her cost thousands, while the sunglasses were less than five hundred.ā
"Just sunglasses will be great," Renee said. "I happen to need a new pair."
Michelle Fuller sidled over too, grinning. "Did Renee pick sunglasses? Then I want sunglasses too."
Zachary Conway, who had been about to look at some clothes, shuffled over. "Uh... Iād like to get some sunglasses, too."
"Alright!" Hilary clapped her hands. "Then after we buy clothes for Addie, weāll all go pick out sunglasses."
After shopping, they went out for barbecue.
Hilary paid for the barbecue. Jude Sherman had transferred 10,000 to her, telling her to treat Renee and her friends to food and drinks.
After dinner, Hilary suggested going to see a movie.
Everyone unanimously agreed.
By the time the movie ended, it was late at night. The van emerged from the underground parking garage into a torrential downpour.
Fortunately, their hotel also had an underground garage, so they managed to avoid the rain completely.
Addie Sutton was once again staying with them at the hotel for the night.
She stood in the shower as warm water trickled down from the ends of her hair. The heat spread across her skin, seeping deep into her heart with a soothing comfort.
āThese past two days have been like a dream. Iām so lucky, so happy.ā
Addie Sutton made a silent vow. āWhen I make money in the future, Iāll definitely repay them for their kindness.ā
āThey were the ones who gave me the courage to keep living in this world.ā
After showering and blow-drying her hair, Renee walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and gazed quietly at the city, shrouded in a downpour.
āDalton Jensonās birthday is coming up,ā she thought. āWhat would be a good gift for him?ā
āI donāt think Iāve ever given Dalton Jenson a proper gift.ā
āNo, thatās not right. To be precise, Iāve never given him a birthday gift at all.ā
āMaybe I should just buy him a car. Heās been driving that used red BMW I traded in.ā
Renee turned, picked up her phone from the nightstand where it was charging, and started looking up cars.
When Michelle Fuller came out of the bathroom, she saw Renee sitting on the edge of the bed. Her slender brows were furrowed, and she looked very serious.
"Renee," she called out. "Did something happen?"
"Nothingās wrong," Renee said, looking up at her.
"Are you sure?" Michelle asked, toweling her hair dry. "You look like something really serious happened."
"There is something big. A good thing, though." Reneeās expression relaxed. She set down her phone and smiled. "My dadās birthday is coming up."
"Your dadās birthday is coming up?" Michelle blinked, then considered it. "Okay, that is a big deal."
āThis is the first time Iāve ever heard Renee talk about her dadās birthday.ā
"When is it?" Michelle asked. "Iāll get him a gift, too."
"The 26th."
"Got it!"
"Iām planning to give him a car."
"Wow." Michelle gave her a thumbs-up. "Heāll definitely be thrilled."
Reneeās lips quirked. "Heāll probably be thrilled, but at first, heāll definitely pretend heās not and say itās a waste of money."
"Haha, youāve got him all figured out," Michelle said with a playful arch of her brows. "So, can you guess what Iām getting you?"
Hearing this, Renee hesitated. "Youāre not going to give me a car, are you?"
"Bingo! You got it!" Michelle snapped her fingers.
"You donāt have to. I already bought a new car."
"Thatās not enough. Itās only one."
"But with the BMW you gave me before, that makes two."
"That BMW was my old one. It doesnāt count," Michelle said, her mind made up. "Anyway, Iāve already decided."
