Chapter 611: Chapter 611: Something Must Have Happened to Polly Eames
The interrogation room was silent. The harsh white light overhead washed out the color from Gregory Dawsonâs face.
"Have you had enough time to think?" Henry Starkâs long fingers tapped lightly on the desk as he sized him up, an unreadable smile on his lips.
Gregory Dawson was defiant. "Think about what? I made myself perfectly clear last night. Levi Brooks getting hurt has nothing to do with me."
"Then why donât you take a look at this?" Kyle Morgan held a tablet in front of him. The screen clearly showed footage of him assaulting Levi Brooks the previous night.
The disdain on Gregory Dawsonâs face slowly gave way to a serious expression.
âHow could they have this video?â
âFrom the angle, it looks like it was filmed from outside the window.â
As Gregory Dawson was still mulling this over, the manâs deep, cold voice cut in again.
"Gregory Dawson, explain your motive. Why did you harm Levi Brooks?"
The video was irrefutable evidence. Gregory Dawson could no longer insist he had nothing to do with it.
He sneered. "I wasnât planning on hitting Levi Brooks. It was his stinking attitude!"
"A bad attitude?" Henry Stark chuckled. "You showed up at his house unannounced, demanded he order you takeout and get you a drink, and he did everything you asked. You call that a bad attitude?"
Hearing this, Gregory Dawson knew the police had already figured out the whole story.
He pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek and scoffed. "He should have been honored."
"Why?"
"Because that bastard Levi Brooks had it better than me! Weâre both supposed to be Elijah Brooksâs sons, so why do I have to be a Dawson? Why did he get to grow up without a single worry, while I got called a fatherless bastard to my face?"
Henry Stark nodded slightly. "We understand how you feel, but your mother, Celia Dawson, said that Elijah Brooks is not your biological father."
"Heâs not?" Gregory Dawsonâs pupils shrank. He grew agitated. "Impossible! Youâre lying to me!"
"If you donât believe us, then weâll do a paternity test with Elijah Brooks," Henry Stark said calmly.
Gregory Dawson calmed down, hesitated for a few seconds, then agreed. "Fine."
Kyle Morgan came forward, plucked two of his hairs, and placed them in a sample bag.
Henry Stark asked again, "When you held Levi Brooks captive, did you ever think about killing him?"
"I donât know." Gregory Dawsonâs eyes were vacant, but his tone was seething. "I just know I hate him. I hate that heâs had it better than me for so many years! I hate that he had a complete family!"
"Thatâs not Levi Brooksâs fault." Henry Stark softened his tone. "Can you tell us why you were so sure Elijah Brooks was your father?"
At this point, Gregory Dawson felt there was no need to hide it anymore. "A man told me."
"What man?"
"I donât know him, but he knew me, and he knew my mom."
"What did he tell you?"
"He told me my biological father was Elijah Brooks," Gregory Dawson explained. "I didnât believe him at first."
Henry Stark raised an eyebrow slightly. "And then?"
"He told me my mom would have a huge reaction whenever Elijah Brooksâs name was mentioned, and that she would act strangely whenever he was around."
"So you watched her, decided the man was telling the truth, and concluded that Elijah Brooks was your biological father?"
Gregory Dawson said nothing, which was a tacit admission.
Kyle Morgan tapped on the tablet a few times and pulled up Sixth Brother Brooksâs ID photo for him to see. "Was he the one who told you Elijah Brooks was your father?"
Gregory Dawson stared at the photo on the screen, examining it carefully before nodding. "Yes, thatâs him."
"Alright, we understand," Henry Stark said evenly. "Weâll notify you when we have the results."
Kyle Morgan handed him the printed statement and a pen. "This is your statement. Please confirm it and sign."
For a long moment, Gregory Dawson didnât move.
Kyle Morgan prompted him, "Gregory Dawson, sign it."
A few seconds later, Gregory Dawson finally picked up the pen and, stroke by stroke, signed his name.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCKâ
"Come in."
Renee Jennings opened the door to Quentin Lowellâs office and smiled. "Director Lowell, is Inky still here?"
"Heâs here."
"Robin is here."
Quentin Lowell and Inky spoke at the same time.
Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow, stepped inside, and was surprised to find a wooden perch stand with toys hanging from it in Quentin Lowellâs office.
Inky was standing on it right now, playing with a bell.
"Director Lowell, you got all this just for Inky?" she asked, surprised.
âNo wonder Inky said he wanted to come find Director Lowell.â
Quentin Lowell chuckled. "This stuff isnât expensive. I bought it online."
Renee Jennings smiled. "It looks like you and Inky are getting along great, Director Lowell."
Quentin Lowell stood up from his executive chair, walked to the electric kettle, and pressed the button. "Kane, have a seat."
"Alright." Renee Jennings sat down on the armchair, and a moment later, Inky landed on her lap.
She tapped the little guyâs head with her finger and explained to Quentin Lowell, "Inky was looking for me earlier, but Henry and I were meeting with the suspectâs family."
"Ah, so thatâs what it was." Quentin Lowell nodded and smiled. "Thatâs fine. You two talk. Iâll make the tea."
"Okay." Renee Jennings lowered her gaze to Inky.
Inky met her gaze and began to report of his own accord. "Renee, last night Robin saw that male sitting on the balcony drinking..."
Inky recounted what he had seen last night at Willowâs house.
After he finished, Renee Jenningsâs slender eyebrows slowly furrowed, and her voice grew heavy. "Are you saying that the male got drunk, smashed a freezer with a stool, and was cursing someone named Polly Eames?"
Inky nodded his little head. "Yes, thatâs right."
Seeing Renee Jenningsâs serious expression, Quentin Lowell asked, "Whatâs going on?"
Renee Jennings explained the situation with Willow and her brother to him.
When Quentin Lowell heard this, he also frowned. "Somethingâs definitely not right. If Polly Eames is the childrenâs biological mother, why would she just abandon them and leave?"
He had handled countless cases. Most involved fathers abandoning their families; cases of mothers abandoning their husbands and children were extremely rare.
His intuition told him something must have happened to Polly Eames.
"Have Inky keep an eye on them," Quentin Lowell said thoughtfully. "You guys find a way to talk with the siblings."
"Understood," Renee Jennings nodded.
Inky piped up, seeking credit, "Robin has been watching! When Robin came to find you, Robin asked friends to follow those two human cubs."
"Inky, youâre amazing." Renee Jennings gave him a thumbs-up. "As expected of my number one little bird detective."
Inky was a little embarrassed by the praise and said humbly, "Itâs nothing, really. Iâm just a little bit amazing!"
Renee Jenningsâs lips curved into a slight smile. "Then you stay here and play with the Director. I have to go."
"Youâre not staying a little longer?" Quentin Lowell asked.
Renee didnât have much to talk about with him, so she shook her head. "No, Director Lowell. I ended my stream abruptly last night, so I have to make it up to everyone."
