Inside the Dukeâs estate library.
Muen stood at the entrance, staring at the towering rows of overstuffed shelves, then rubbed his face hard with both hands.
âFuck this world.â
âEven a clay doll has some temperâif youâre going to torture me like this, then Iâll fucking fight back!â
He lifted his head.
All the confusion, fear, and frustration that had clouded his eyes since Father leftâsince his whole plan went up in flamesâhad now vanished.
In their place was only one thing: resolve.
So what if Iâm the yellow-haired villain?
Is a yellow-haired villain not allowed to seek happiness?
Screw that.
I want it anyway.
âCalm down. First thingâs first: I need to get stronger.â
Muen looked at the books lining the library shelves.
It couldnât compare to the Saint âȘ NĐŸvĐ”lŃgÒ»t âȘ (Official version) Maria Academyâs library, sureâbut for him, for now, this was more than enough.
âSince Fatherâs gone, Iâll self-study. Iâll use the assassins from the Black Book to test my results.â
âIn other words, the resources here at the Dukeâs estate should be enough to help me get strong enough to defeat the assassin recorded in the Black Book!â
âAt that point, Iâll finally have a solid means of defending myself.â
âStealthy growth is still the way. For now, schoolâs off the table.â
âWith both Father and Mother gone, at least no oneâs around to object anymore.â
With his revised plan in mind, Muenâs eyes grew sharper.
No more wasting timeâhe reached for the nearest shelf and pulled out a book, opening it without hesitation.
But he didnât start reading.
Instead, he flipped through a few pages quickly and then closed his eyes.
Several minutes later, he opened them again, unable to suppress the joy in his gaze.
âAs I thoughtâbooks can be recorded too.â
âSeems like it only works for the words my eyes actually see.â
âBut thatâs enough. I donât need to memorize everything manuallyâI can just scan through them and have the Black Book record the contents.â
âThat way, I can call them up whenever I need them!â
Excited, Muen wasted no more time and began rapidly flipping through the book in his hand.
He didnât try to understandâjust focused on getting the pages in front of his eyes.
âWait, hang onâwhat even is this book?â
Nearly done with the whole thing, Muen suddenly remembered this minor detail and turned back to check the cover.
âUnlocking with Fishbones â 100 Home Invasion Techniquesâ
â...Are you fucking kidding me?!â
Furious, Muen slammed the book to the floor.
âHow the hell does a Dukeâs estate even have this kind of thing? And on the front shelf, no less?!â
Unconvinced, he grabbed another at random.
âFlirting Techniques Even a Monkey Can Master â How to Gracefully Reel in a Goddessâ
âI donât need to seduce a goddessâI just want to not get pinned and ground into the floor by one!â
âIdiots Can Learn in Three Days! â Reading Fertility from a Womanâs Hiplineâ
âThree days? Village aunties could teach that in three minutes!â
ââ âs Reproduction and Breeding Techniquesâ
â...Is this really something Iâm supposed to be reading?â
âThe Bedroom Artsâ
âAhem, Iâm just checking if this is a proper manual, okay? Not like Iâm actually recording itââ
...
âAbsolute trash,â Muen muttered, exhausted. âHalf of these books are useless garbage, and some are just downright weird.â
After spending the better part of the day sorting the entire library, Muen had nothing left in his heart but despair toward the ancestors of House Campbellâand that cheap old man of his.
There probably wasnât a single serious reader among them.
This library mustâve been set up just for show. Otherwise, why would they have crammed it full of this chaotic nonsense?
A third of the books were basically unspeakable smut!
â...Still, at least half of it was worthwhile.â
He looked down at the book in his hands, eyes lighting up.
Even if no one in House Campbell was a reader, as a noble house with a lineage spanning centuries, their collection was still substantial. Plenty of it covered martial arts, magic, and even theology and divine blessings.
For someone like Muen, in desperate need of building a foundation from scratch, these were priceless.
Take the current book, for exampleâBasic Martial Arts Fundamentals.
To him, it was like rain after a year-long drought.
âWhether I study it seriously or not comes laterâfirst I need to record it.â
Eager and thrilled, Muen was just about to open the book again whenâ
âYoung Master, youâre still reading?â
Anneâs voice came from behind.
She stepped into the library, eyeing the cold, untouched food tray off to the side with a frown.
âYou havenât even eaten properly.â
âDonât rush meâIâll eat after I finish this book.â
âBut you said the same thing earlier.â
Without warning, Anne stepped forward and forcefully shut the Basic Martial Arts Fundamentals in Muenâs hands.
âAnne, what are you doing?â
Muen gave a helpless smile.
âI know my limits.â
âYoung Master, dinner is ready.â
âOh, itâs that late already? I didnât even notice. Like lunch, just bring itââ
âBut if I do that, youâll forget again.â
Anne stared straight into his eyes. âI promised the Master and Madam Iâd look after you. So I wonât allow you to be like this. At the very least, you will eat a proper dinner.â
âI...â
Muen looked at her crouched in front of him.
There was a faint floral scent coming from herâpleasant and subtle. It filled his nostrils and fogged his brain, stirring up the fatigue from an entire day of reading and sorting.
He glanced at the rarely assertive look on Anneâs face... then at the book in his hands he hadnât even recorded yet.
With a sigh, he gave in.
â...Fine. Iâll eat first.â
He hadnât managed to get through much of the material today, but it wasnât like he couldnât spare the time for one decent meal.
Call it rest for recovery.
Muen stood up, slid the book back onto the shelf, and walked toward the dining room.
â...â
Anne didnât follow immediately.
Instead, she turned around, pulled the book heâd just shelved back out.
Basic Martial Arts Fundamentals...
She skimmed the cover.
Then looked up at the neatly arranged shelves.
Everything had been reorganizedâno more chaos.
The junk and erotica were buried deep in the back corners, while the valuable martial arts, magic, and academic texts had all been placed within easy reach.
â...Young Master, you really have changed.â
Clang.
A flash of cold light.
The book in her hands was suddenly sliced clean in half by a blade that had appeared from seemingly nowhere.
Shredded paper drifted into the wind as she tossed the fragments out the window.
âSo fast. So sudden. Itâs like you became someone else overnight.â
âIf thatâs the case... then there are some things I canât afford to wait on anymore.â
â...Donât blame me for this, Young Master Muen.â
