The faint smell of roast chicken lingered in the air.
Jun Yao and Ming Ye suddenly whipped their heads around, ready to give chase. Alarmed, Jiang Yunnuan quickly moved to stop them.
"Donât go! The lamb and the skewers are all cooked. If you rush off after them, not only will you probably not get back what was stolen, but we might lose whatâs left here too."
Whoever could steal so much right under the noses of all four of them without a trace was clearly no ordinary person. Jiang Yunnuan didnât want to invite trouble.
If even one of these guys died, her mission would fail. She absolutely couldnât let them act recklessly.
âSo what if itâs just three chickens, a handful of skewers, and one leg of lamb?â
âWhatâs the big deal?â
âBesides, they didnât steal everything. They left us this much, so they have some sense of honor, I guess.â
Hearing her words, Ming Yeâs gaze fell on the roast lamb that was missing a leg. He gave up the idea of giving chase, bending down to lift the roast lamb from the fire and carry it over to the table.
Jun Yao also walked over to the grill and gathered all the remaining skewers. Then, he wrapped an arm around her, guiding her toward the table.
"Youâve worked hard. You can teach me, and Iâll handle it from now on."
His voice was low, and his expression held no trace of his earlier ferocity. It was as if he had completely forgotten what happened, but Jiang Yunnuan knew this was all a facade.
His Blackening Value had yet to fall, and a sinister black aura still clung to him. His calm and reason were only temporary; he could erupt at any moment.
"Oh!"
She gave a perfunctory reply, letting him keep his arm around her as they walked to the table.
There were no chairs, so they all sat on the ground.
Ming Ye and Fu Yuan occupied one side, and he another. Jiang Yunnuan naturally moved toward the empty space, but just as she was about to sit down, her arm was yanked forcefully.
She was pulled into his arms, her waist seized by a large, searing hand. He forcefully pushed her down onto his hard lap.
SNAP...
Fu Yuan, who had been holding back all day, finally snapped. He clenched his fists, the bamboo skewer in his hand breaking with the force. He shot to his feet, his face dark with fury as he glared at him.
"Youâve gone too far! Jiang Yunnuan already went through the Contract Termination. How long are you going to keep possessing her like this?"
At his words, Jiang Yunnuanâs heart lurched with panic. She frantically tried to signal him with her eyes to shut up and not stir up trouble.
âThis guy is a ticking time bomb! Why are you trying to set him off?â
âDonât you know how to lay low and bide your time?â
âItâs not too late to turn on him once weâre actually strong enough to beat him!â
"Open up."
A skewer was suddenly offered to her lips, the tempting aroma of cumin tickling her nose. Jiang Yunnuan froze for a second, then parted her lips and bit off a piece. Her mouth instantly exploded with flavor.
The rich, savory flavor of the meat spread across her tongue. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, perfectly charred, and with an ideal balance of fat and lean meatâit was indescribably delicious.
She took another bite and turned her head to see the man holding her, his eyes patiently fixed on her, without sparing Fu Yuan so much as a glance.
It was as if he hadnât heard a single word, showing no intention of acknowledging him.
Jiang Yunnuan breathed a small sigh of relief.
Unlike her, Fu Yuan only grew angrier at being ignored. He suddenly reached out, grabbed her arm, and tried to pull her away.
However, she didnât budge.
A powerful arm, like an iron band, was locked tightly around her waist. If anything, it was her own arm that began to hurt from the pulling.
"Let go!"
The man holding her finally looked up at him, a dangerous glint entering his sharp eyes.
Fu Yuan scoffed. "And by what right do you tell me to do that? Youâre the one who should be letting go, arenât you?"
Before Jun Yao could respond, he turned to Jiang Yunnuan.
"And you! Stay away from him. Youâve already gone through the Contract Termination, so whatâs this all about, hanging around him all day? Donât Ming Ye and I get to keep any of our dignity?"
Ming Ye: "..."
âWhat does this have to do with me?â
âWhy drag me into this?â
The man, who had been enthusiastically devouring his skewers, paused mid-bite and shot Fu Yuan an annoyed glance.
Jiang Yunnuan felt a wave of misery wash over her. She struggled to get up, but she couldnât break free.
Exasperated, she looked at Jun Yao. "Let go. Iâll go sit over there by myself."
He acted as if he hadnât heard her, refusing to loosen his grip as his gaze grew increasingly cold.
Jiang Yunnuan: "..."
âIâm exhausted. Screw it all!!!â
She stopped struggling, no longer bothering with Fu Yuan. After wrenching her arm free, she grabbed a handful of skewers and began to devour them.
âJust eating meat feels like itâs missing something,â she thought, âitâs not quite hitting the spot.â After a moment, she decisively redeemed a case of canned craft beer. She pulled one out and stretched her arm to hand it to Ming Ye.
"Ming Ye, have one with me."
âAs for those other two, they can do whatever the hell they want!â
Staring at the strange can, Ming Ye hesitated for a moment before taking it. Jiang Yunnuan popped the tab, clinked her can against his, then tilted her head back and took a long drink.
