The collapse of the underground laboratory threw the entire Imperial City into chaos.
Erland, barely alive, staggered out of the rubble, saved only by the sorcerers and guards who had shielded him.
But before he could catch his breath, he shouted through his exhaustion and pain:
âQuicklyâgather all available forces! Stop Konstantin and Feir at any cost!â
âYes, my lord!â
Erland looked up, watching the two massive figures against the night sky, clenching his teeth in frustration.
The old sorcerer had hinted that this escape had been planned from the beginning by Konstantin and Feir. But Erland couldnât understand how Konstantin had mustered enough consciousness to plan such a dangerous escape. The first contact between Konstantin and Feir must have occurred after the Red Dragon Sanctuary battle, when Feir carried Konstantinâs head back to the Empire.
At that time, Konstantin should have been too weak to plan anything, and there was no guarantee that the Empireâs sorcerers wouldnât entirely wipe out his will during the second fusion attempt. If they had succeeded in controlling him, Konstantin would have become nothing more than a biological weapon, void of any self-will.
As Erland tightened his fist, shouts and spell chants filled the air as sorcerers and guards bombarded the sky with long-range spells, trying to target Feir and Konstantin.
But Feir, the Ironwing Dragon King, wasnât renowned for nothing; his speed and agility gave him complete dominance in the sky.
With his arm extended, Konstantin gripped one of Feirâs claws, his whole body suspended in the air. As he looked down at the humans below, a dangerous gleam of hatred ignited in his eyes.
âThey trapped me in that incubation chamber, cut my flesh, and tried to erase my will with their potions and magic,â he said, his voice a low growl.
Feir nodded, âIt was a privilege to help you, Lord Konstantin. I only provided the barrier spell.â
Back when Feir had carried Konstantinâs head from the sanctuary, Konstantin, with his faint remaining will, had managed to communicate with him. Upon learning of Konstantinâs plan, Feir had cast a barrier spell within his mind, isolating a part of his will, invisible to the Empireâs sorcerers. When the Empire revived him, the barrier was lifted, allowing the Red Flame Dragon Kingâs rebirth.
âDo you intend to take revenge on these humans now, Konstantin?â Feir asked.
Konstantin looked down at the town and the scrambling soldiers, casually hurling a fireball into their ranks, igniting an explosive blaze among the pursuing troops.
âNowâs not the time for revenge.â
Konstantin studied his right hand, which had just unleashed the fireball. âThis new body will need time to adjust, andâŠâ
âAnd?â
Konstantin clenched his fist, a glimmering white energy gathering within his palm. âAnd this ancient power⊠I canât control it completely yet.â
âAncient power⊠you mean?â
âThe Primordial Force.â
âPrimordial Force⊠the power of the original Dragon King, Noah, the first Dragon King in dragon history, second only in rank to Tiamat, the Dragon God.â
During his time in confinement, Konstantin had often overheard the humans mentioning the âPrimordial Force.â Being an ancient Dragon King himself, Konstantin knew exactly what that was.
He hadnât expected these insignificant humans to have obtained such an ancient and potent powerâit was genuinely surprising.
âAh⊠yes, the Primordial Force. The Empireâs other partnership with the dragon clans is for the Primordial Force in the far north,â Feir explained. âStelladragon King Ravi and I both contributed to that partnership.â
Feir paused, adding, âRavi even sacrificed his life in the process.â
Konstantinâs gaze shifted. âWho killed him?â
Feir didnât answer directly, but Konstantin could guess.
âLeon CosmodâŠâ
âYes, that man killed several Dragon Kings allied with the Empire, one after another.â
Konstantin growled. âKidâŠâ
âWhat?â
âHow long did you stay in the far north?â
Feir was puzzled but replied, âAbout five years, I suppose.â
âOh⊠then you wouldnât know,â Konstantin muttered to himself.
âKnow what?â Feir asked, curiosity piqued.
Konstantin scoffed. âYou wouldnât know who Leonâs first Dragon King kill was.â
Feir, ever straightforward, asked, âWho was it?â
Konstantin wanted to ask if Feir was deliberately messing with him. He sighed and said, âIt was me.â
Feirâs flight faltered for a moment in shock. âSorry, I donât keep up much with the news down south.â
âItâs fine.â
Konstantinâs mind churned, his attention drawn to Feirâs words about the Empireâs collaboration in the far north.
âSo, the Empireâs deal with us dragons isnât just about prolonging this war. It also involves something in the far north⊠I didnât know that.â
âItâs a secret project to locate Noahâs Primordial Force,â Feir explained. âBut after Ravi died, without a Dragon King adept in spatial magic, they couldnât get past the northern ice barriers. The collaboration was called off.â
As Konstantin considered Feirâs explanation, a wild thought began to take shape in his mind.
The pursuers below continued to multiply.
Feir beat his wings, gaining speed as Konstantin sent down a few more fireballs to distract the soldiers.
âTake us to my territory, Feir.â
âGot it.â
With a thunderous clap, the Ironwing Dragon King accelerated, disappearing into the thick night.
Meanwhile, at the gates of the Imperial City, Tiger and Rebecca watched the chaos unfold from the top of an abandoned tower.
âLooks like the Empireâs alliance with the dragons has crumbled,â Rebecca remarked.
âNot entirely,â Tiger replied. âBut after what happened with Konstantin, no dragon will be eager to work with these selfish madmen.â
Rebeccaâs mind worked quickly. âYou think Konstantin will go after our Captain too?â
Tiger nodded. âBut at least not right away. We still have time to prepare a countermeasure.â
âGood, weâre meeting with the Captain soon to exchange intel.â
Rebeccaâs eyes sparkled mischievously. âWeâll also tell him about our âLionheart Society.â Heâll be thrilled.â
Tiger hesitated, scratching his forehead awkwardly. âSo weâre really going with âLionheart Societyâ? Isnât that a bit⊠flashy?â
âWhat else? âTiger Clubâ?â Rebecca teased.
âAlright, Lionheart Society it is.â
After all, a girl who named her squad âOld, Weak, Sick, and Pregnantâ was unlikely to come up with something modest.
âLionheart Society sounds fierce, and itâs clearly dragon-slaying inspired. Perfectly suited to the Captainâs image!â Rebecca argued, arms crossed.
âFine, fine. Fierce it is.â
Tiger straightened, his hand on the hilt of his sword, and gazed into the depths of the night.
Then, turning his head slightly, his gaze softened, and he whispered to himself:
âA greater threat is on its way. Take care of yourself, Charlotte.â
