With the war over, there was no need to worry about ambushes or take detours. Leon and his team took a direct route across the continent and returned to the Empire in less than ten days.
Arriving late in the evening, Leon declined the welcome banquet his friends had prepared for him, opting instead for a quiet meal at a tavern with Rebecca and a few others. He found it more comfortable to share simple moments with old friends rather than endure the formalities of a banquet.
âAs I entered the city, I noticed that nearly all the streets have been restored. Your work here has been pretty efficient,â Leon said, holding a can of beef and nodding approvingly.
âWell, the Upper District was the main economic center,â Nacho replied with a wry smile. âWhen the Nightmare Demon was kicked out, it nearly brought down the Empireâs entire financial structure. It took some time to rebuild, but weâve even managed to get our hands on canned beef againâthough there were days it was nothing but cold water and noodles.â
Leon chuckled, âStill as sharp-tongued as ever, Nacho.â
Nacho grinned and extended his hand to Leon. âWelcome back. With your help, weâll finally rid the Empire of the last remnants.â
Leon put down his can, shaking Nachoâs hand firmly. âYouâve had a tough job here. Any progress in interrogating the ministers who colluded with Cantor?â
Nacho considered for a moment. âProgress? Yes⊠but not the kind we expected.â
Leon raised an eyebrow. âOh? What do you mean?â
Rebecca smirked. âYouâll see for yourself tomorrow.â
Leon immediately stood up. âWhy wait until tomorrow? Letâs go now.â
âBut you and Rebecca have an important mission coming up. You should rest,â Nacho replied.
Rebecca shook her head with a grin. âLetâs not keep him waiting; knowing the captain, heâll drive himself mad if he catches even a hint of something interesting and doesnât see it through.â
Nacho raised his eyebrows. âIs that so? I didnât know the great dragon slayer had such a restless side.â
âOh, itâs real,â Rebecca said, teasingly lifting Leonâs chin. âAnd now itâs for my benefit, of course.â
Leon chuckled, nudging her hand away. âYouâre incorrigible.â
---
In the early hours, Leon, Nacho, Rebecca, and Martin headed to the Imperial Prisonâs special detention area.
âThis place was reserved for notable figures during Cantorâs rule,â Nacho explained as they walked through the dimly lit corridors.
âNotable figures? They even had a special area just for that?â Leon asked, puzzled.
Nacho nodded. âMost of them were high-profile scapegoats.â
âScapegoats?â Rebecca asked, catching on.
âExactly. When the Empire thought Leon had died in the Silver Dragon conflict, they pinned the defeat on him, making him the perfect scapegoat. It was the only time the Empire ever officially blamed him for anything.â
âQuite the âhonorableâ scapegoat positionâŠâ Leon muttered.
Nacho continued, âBack then, Cantor and his allies conducted a lot of shady dealings. When any of their dirty work risked exposure, they would find some poor fool to take the fall.â
âAnd if things got out of hand and a regular scapegoat wasnât enough to calm the public, theyâd pick someone with a big name to shift attention,â Nacho added. âMost of the public didnât care about the truth. They just wanted to see someone important pay.â
âCanât blame them, really,â Nacho continued, running a hand along the prison wall. âWith the Empire controlling information so strictly, people couldnât think independently.â
He stopped by a seemingly plain wall. âThis area was once a âluxury suiteâ for those high-ranking scapegoats. Outwardly, it looked modest, but it was more comfortable than it appeared.â
Leon nodded thoughtfully. âYouâre remarkably well-informed about the inner workings of the Empire. Werenât you just a logistics staffer for the dragon-slaying troops back then?â
Nacho shrugged, smiling. âMy father was once one of those scapegoats.â
Leon looked away, remembering that Nacho had once confided in him about his fatherâs fate. Framed for leaking military secrets, his father had been promised mercy if he completed a final mission but was ultimately betrayed and murdered in prison. Driven by a desire to uncover the Empireâs darkest secrets, Nacho had chosen to side with Leon.
âAfter Cantorâs fall, we rounded up his collaborators and threw them in here for questioning,â Rebecca added. âBut they donât get any special treatment now. One cell, a pile of strawâthatâs all they get.â
Leon stopped, nodding approvingly. âSeems fitting for a prison.â
âSo,â Rebecca smirked, âCaptain, how do you know so much about prison life?â
âIâll leave that question to his âdear wifeâ to answer,â Nacho joked.
Just then, a voice called out from one of the cells.
âLeon Cosmod! Iâm innocent! Get me out of hereâI was never in league with that rat Cantor!â
The shout sparked a chorus of pleas from the other cells.
âCosmod! Tell them I was framed tooâI never trafficked anyone!â
âIâm innocent too! Those children⊠they all came willingly!â
âWait, wait, Iâm innocent too! Those women came on to me!â
Leon scowled, his patience thinning. âAre they all this delusional?â
Nacho nodded. âInterrogation over several weeks does tend to mess with their heads. Itâs what we want, thoughâotherwise, theyâd all be impossible to break.â
âNo oneâs been wrongly accused, I assume?â
âRest assured, weâre certain theyâre all guilty.â Nacho led Leon to a cell at the end of the corridor.
Through a one-way magic barrier, they could clearly see an older man slumped over a pile of straw. Shirtless, the man looked worn and dejected, yet his body radiated a hidden strength beneath his frail exterior.
Leon immediately recognized him.
âFuehr Last. The commander of the dragon-slaying forces under the previous king.â
Nacho sighed deeply. âTwenty years ago, the newspapers reported his death.â
