Noa listened to the recording several times, trying to extract any useful information. All she got was what they already knew.
âWho is âShadowâ? Why have I never heard you mention that name before?â
Inside her consciousness, Noa posed the question. For once, even the Ancestor seemed at a loss.
âI donât know. But this âShadow,â since they were able to grant Adam the Black Dragon Scale, must be connected to the concept of âUltimate Fear.ââ
Noa frowned, lost in thought for a moment, then said:
âMy dad was away for a long time after his supposed death, not even coming home. Yet during my promotion trial, he suddenly showed up in the Moonlit Forest, teaming up with Konstantin to defeat Adam. I always thought that was just a coincidence. But now that I think about it, they must have gotten a lead on Adam and followed it there.â
âYour fatherâs intention must have been to use Adamâs trail to trace the âShadowâ behind him. But then that hammer-wielding âclownâ injured you. After that, the nature of the situation changed for your father.â
The Ancestor couldnât entirely grasp the concept of friendship but deeply understood familial bonds.
And there was no one in this world who didnât know that General Leon was a renowned âdaughter-obsessedâ father.
When his daughter was endangered, how could he think about anything else? Of course, he would have exploded with rage and gone all out against the hammer-wielding clown.
âI think so too,â Noa admitted.
She paused, took a deep breath, and added, âBut still, if Dad had been chasing such an important lead, it must have been really dangerous. And because of me, that lead was lostâŠâ
âSelf-blame doesnât work like that, sweetheart.â
The Ancestor gently rubbed Noaâs shoulder, then, in an uncharacteristic gesture, patted her head softly, her movements tender.
âIf you were my daughter, in such a situation, Iâd have done everything to help you get revenge too. Any parent would have made the same choice.â
âItâs not your fatherâs fault. Shadow hurt you; theyâre the one to blame.â
The Ancestor, uncharacteristically earnest, comforted Noa. The princess wasnât one to dwell too long on such thoughts. She nodded, her tone still somewhat low, but her mood visibly improved.
âAlright, I understand.â
âAt the very least, we now know about the existence of âUltimate Fear,ââ the Ancestor said. âWe can use this knowledge to assist your father in his investigation.â
âThe only difficulty,â she added, âis figuring out how to present this lead to him as his daughter.â
âThat is indeed a challenge.â
âIf you reveal too much or make it too obvious, Leon will undoubtedly become suspicious. But if itâs too little, the clue becomes meaningless.â
Noa furrowed her brow, at a loss for a solution.
âTake your time. Thereâs no need to rush,â the Ancestor reassured her. âSince your father spent months at home chasing Adam and âShadow,â it shows the situation hasnât yet reached a critical level of danger.â
The Ancestorâs voice turned more serious.
âBesides, I have some troubling news to share with you.â
âWhat is it?â
âWhen Konstantin handed the Black Dragon Scale to your father, I could still sense the presence of Chaos Energy.â
Noa froze, her mind racing. âYouâre saying⊠Konstantin still carries traces of the Black Dragon Scaleâs Chaos Energy?â
âYes. The primordial chaos tied to Ultimate Fear lingers on Konstantin. I donât know what this might lead to, but you need to warn your fatherââ
âBe extremely careful.â
The next morning, Noa struggled to breathe, overwhelmed by a sweet, milky fragrance.
She forced her eyes open and nuzzled against something soft resting on her pillow. The familiar touch and scent were comforting yet felt⊠off.
This wasnât her mother.
Realization struck, and Noaâs eyes flew open.
âA-Aunt?! What are you doing here?â
The red-haired beauty lying beside her stirred at the sound of Noaâs voice. Isha murmured softly, pulling Noa closer into her embrace.
âDonât make a fuss⊠Your mom left me at the door all morning. Let me sleep a bit longer.â
âMmph! Mmmph!â Noa could only let out muffled protests as her face was pressed against her auntâs chest.
Isha finally loosened her hold slightly.
âCan you breathe now?â
âYesâŠâ
âGood. Then let Auntie cuddle you a little longerâŠâ
Noa blinked, her long lashes brushing against Ishaâs skin, making her aunt squirm slightly.
âStop it, Noa,â Isha teased.
âSo, Auntie, you came this early just to nap with me?â
âNo,â Isha replied with a lazy yawn. âI mixed up the dates. I thought today was the day your dad was fighting Odin, but it turns out itâs the day after tomorrow.â
âSo I figured, since your momâs out of sight, Iâd sneak into your room and spend the night. Butâahhhââ She yawned again. âI ended up here with you.â
Her philosophy was simple: If the stronger one isnât available, cuddle the cutest one instead.
Noa sighed. âSo Auntie, you got the Tower Masterâs invitation too?â
âOf course. How could I miss something like this? Your dad and Odinâs fights are legendary. They even fought a decade ago.â
Noa rolled her eyes but snuggled back into her auntâs embrace. âAlright, then letâs just restââ
But before she could doze off, the ground beneath them suddenly shook violently!
Noa panicked, disoriented by the tremor. Isha wasted no time, scooping her niece up and leaping out of the bed. Without even pausing to put on shoes, she dashed to the balcony.
Unfurling her crimson dragon wings, she leaped into the air, hovering above the swaying city.
âWhatâs happening? Everything was fine a moment ago!â Noa asked, clutching her aunt tightly.
Isha scanned the surroundings, noting other dragons taking to the skies to avoid the shaking structures. She gently patted Noaâs head.
âDonât worry, sweetheart. Itâs just an earthquake.â
âAn earthquake? But weâre in Sky City!â
From behind them, Rosvisserâs voice rang out.
âSister! Are you alright?â
Isha turned to see Rosvisser flying towards them, cradling Muse in her arms.
âWeâre fine,â Isha replied. âBut why would there be an earthquake here?â
Before they could puzzle it out, Leon appeared, leaping from Noaâs balcony. Since he couldnât fly like the others, he used nearby structures to slow his descent before landing safely on the ground.
He must have rushed into Noaâs room the moment the tremors began, intending to carry her out, only to find Isha already there.
Once he landed, Leon looked up.
âIs everyone alright?â
The earthquake lasted only a few seconds. Rosvisser and Isha, each holding a child, descended gently to the ground.
âWeâre fine. But why did this happen?â
âSky City is floating. Earthquakes shouldnât be possibleâŠâ
âItâs the second one this year,â someone nearby commented. âIt never used to happen before.â
Leonâs brow furrowed as he listened.
Noa stood still, staring at the ground.
A chilling sensation seeped upward, a faint but unmistakable trace of something sinister emanating from deep below.
