Hearing the faint reprimand in Mevisâs tone, Shari snorted coldly, crossing her arms.
âYou tooâdonât call me by my real name in the academy. If Lord Shadow finds out that all the resources spent placing me here to assist you were wasted, it will be on you.â
As the former Empress, Shari would not tolerate being lectured by anyone except Lord Shadow. She knew the risks of using the All-Seeing Eye within the academy but had no other choice to pass that cursed entrance exam.
Mevis, as always, kept her expression neutral, her tone calm.
âUnderstood, Shari.â
Shari smirked, leaning in. âYou know, the All-Seeing Eye is truly useful. Last time, when we went to Sky City to gather intel on Leon, wasnât it this spell that did the trick?â
Mevis didnât lift her gaze, responding with a simple, âYes.â
âThanks to your intel, Lord Shadow was able to draft such a detailed plan to deal with Leon. Itâs a pity we didnât manage to finish him off in Flaming Valley,â Shari remarked leisurely.
She added with a sly smile, âSome say Lord Shadow isnât ready for a direct confrontation with Leon yet, but there are other ways to bring him down.â
Finally looking up from her papers, Mevis asked, âSo, what exactly is the task Lord Shadow assigned you to help me with?â
âLeonâs youngest daughter just took the entrance exam. That means all four of his daughters are now studying at St. Heathâs Academy.â
Shariâs lips curled into an ominous grin.
âLord Shadowâs idea is simple: find an opportunity to get rid of those little dragonlingsââ
Before Shari could finish, Mevis cut her off abruptly.
âWasnât the original plan just surveillance? Why has it changed?â
Her tone remained flat, but her eyes carried a subtle sharpness.
Shari froze for a moment, realizing she had slipped. Quickly, she recovered her composure.
âWell, plans evolve, Mevis. The best strategy is to strike at the heart. Even the strongest have weaknesses, and when theyâre exposed, thatâs when they truly crumble.â
Shari chuckled darkly.
âI canât wait to see Leon Cosmod completely fall apart. What a sight that will be.â
Mevis didnât respond, lowering her gaze back to the small piece of cake in her handsâthe one Moon had just given her. She had barely taken a bite.
âOh, whatâs this? Food? Perfect, Iâm starving,â Shari said suddenly, snatching the cake from Mevis without waiting for permission. She took a big bite.
âHeyââ
Mevis reached out, her lips parting as if to say something, but then stopped herself.
âNot bad, pretty tasty,â Shari commented, brushing off the crumbs from her hands.
âAnyway,â Shari continued, âthe next phase of the plan involves Noa and her sisters. Youâve been working to gain Noaâs trust all this time, havenât you?â
Mevis hesitated, her eyes shifting slightly downward. âYes.â
âGood. Well done. Iâll make sure to mention your efforts to Lord Shadow,â Shari said, turning on her heel and walking toward the training groundsâ exit.
As she reached the doorway, she paused, glancing back over her shoulder.
âThe sooner you complete your task, the sooner youâll get the Black Dragon Scale. Donât forget that, Mevis.â
Mevis clenched the fabric of her sleeve tightly, her voice low. âYes, I understand.â
Without another word, Shari left the training hall.
The door slammed shut, blocking out the sunlight that had briefly warmed the room.
Standing in the shadowy corner, Mevis felt the lingering warmth fade away, replaced by an icy chill that seeped into her heart.
âWhy⊠does it feel like something precious was taken from me?â
For a fleeting moment, she wanted to collapse in that corner and cry her heart out.
âMevis, what are you doing here?â
The sudden voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
Peeking around the corner was Moon, her cheerful face framed by bouncing locks of hair. Her bright blue eyes sparkled with curiosity.
âAh⊠nothing,â Mevis replied, her tone flustered.
âOkay then! My sister says sheâs ready for the next stage of training,â Moon announced with a smile.
âAlright, letâs go back,â Mevis said, forcing herself to straighten up.
Moon skipped forward, grabbing Mevisâs hand. The size difference forced Mevis to stoop slightly as they walked back to the training area.
Looking down at Moonâs tiny hand in hers, Mevis murmured softly,
âSuch warm hands⊠just like that fleeting sunlight.â
A week after the entrance exam, Leonâs family returned to the academy for the admission ceremony.
Muse had already received her acceptance letter, but her exact ranking would only be revealed during the ceremony. Unfortunately, the event clashed with Noa and Moonâs class schedule, so the whole family couldnât attend together.
Still, Muse was brimming with excitement to see her resultsâespecially since her father had promised to buy her a new instrument if she outperformed Hefei.
âBefore the ceremony starts, you can check the leaderboard at the back of the hall for the young dragonsâ rankings,â a teacher announced.
Carrying Muse on his shoulders, Leon walked over to the leaderboard with Rosvisser.
Muse leaned forward eagerly, scanning the list from the top down. Her name wasnât immediately visible, which meant she had scored well.
âHere it is! Muse!â Rosvisser pointed excitedly.
Her name was listed in
second place
.
âSecond place, thatâs excellent, Muse,â Leon praised.
Muse nodded, but her face lacked its usual cheer.
âWhatâs wrong, Muse? Second place is a great achievement,â Rosvisser asked gently.
Unlike traditional dragon families, Leon and Rosvisser never pressured their daughters to achieve specific goals. To them, the effort and lessons learned were far more valuable than any outcome.
But Museâs discontent wasnât about falling short of first place.
She pointed to the leaderboard, pouting.
âHefei got first place. She scored one point higher than me.â
Leon glanced at the top of the list. Sure enough, it was Konstantinâs fiery little daughter.
âOh, so the pesky fire brat beat you this time,â Leon remarked with a chuckle. âIâll admit, Konstantin might not be the best parent, but he does know how to teach.â
Museâs lip quivered. âDoes this mean I wonât get a new instrumentâŠ?â
Leon gently pinched her cheek, smiling.
âDonât worry, sweetheart. I already have it ready for you.â
Museâs eyes lit up. âReally, Daddy?â
âOf course. It was meant to be a surprise for tonightâs celebration.â
âYay!â Muse squealed. Then, after a pause, she added, âBut⊠didnât you say I needed to beat Hefei to get it?â
Rosvisser chimed in with a smirk.
âYour dad just wanted an excuse to give you the gift, Muse. Heâs such a softie.â
âMom! Donât expose me like that,â Leon grumbled.
In truth, Leon had prepared the instrument even before Muse took the exam. The condition was only meant to motivate her; he would have given it to her regardless of the result.
âThank you, Daddy! Thank you, Mommy! I love you both!â Muse cried, kissing both her parents on the cheeks.
As the family shared this tender moment, a familiar voice interrupted.
âSecond place, Muse. Not bad,â said Hefei, standing with her father, Konstantin.
Muse stuck out her tongue playfully.
âNext time, Iâll beat you, Hefei!â
Hefei smirked. âIâll be waiting.â
Meanwhile, Konstantin couldnât resist gloating to Leon.
âWell, Leon, I told you Hefei would outperform Muse!â
Surprisingly, Leon remained calm, nodding. âCongratulations.â
âDonât pretend youâre not upset. I know this burns you,â Konstantin teased.
Leon smiled mysteriously. âNot at all. In fact, I should thank you.â
âThank me? For what?â
Leon didnât answer, simply exchanging a knowing glance with Rosvisser. The couple shared a mischievous smile.
It wasnât until the announcerâs voice echoed through the hall that Konstantin understood.
âLetâs welcome the family of this yearâs first-place student, the Red Flame Dragon King and his daughter Hefei, to deliver a speech!â
