Chapter 112: Chapter 58: The Scorned Wife of the 50s (58)
Both his arms and one of his legs dangled at odd angles. He couldnāt use his right hand to soothe his aching left, nor could he use his left to support his aching right. His right leg swung loosely from the knee.
His heavy frame was tensed, his arms held rigid. He tried to balance on one leg, but waves of pain, first from one limb then another, were so intense that he passed out. He fell with a THUD, landing right on his injured side. The impact on his three broken limbs shocked him awake, only for the agony to make him pass out again.
Even Zhu Yun winced in sympathy for him.
When the group arrived at the "battlefield," they found Lin Jin at the door, staring into the room in utter disbelief. Old Mrs. Wang stood inside like a stone pillar, and at her feet was a puddle of steaming, acrid-smelling yellow liquid.
A large man lay on the floor, his arms and leg twisted into grotesque, unsettling positions.
Meanwhile, Zhu Yun was crouched in a corner, clutching her stomach with a pale face.
With her eyes squeezed shut, she whimpered in terror, "Donāt kill me... I didnāt see anything... I didnāt see you two kissing..."
"Even though this isnāt the first or second time, I really donāt know anything..."
She was fair-skinned and pretty. Even at six months pregnant, she had only gained a little weight, which, contrasted with her large belly, made her trembling figure seem all the more small, frail, and pitiableālike a little white rabbit facing a big bad wolf.
The onlookers had mixed reactions to her words, but they all rushed forward to help her up, asking after her with concern.
Mrs. Chu had opened her door at the sound of footsteps. Seeing Zhu Yun, she was a mixture of angry and heartbroken. "Weāre going to the hospital. When we get back, weāll settle this!"
Zhu Yun clung to her arm and gave it a faint squeeze, signaling that she was all right.
Despite this, she winced and stood up with a hiss of pain. "Oww... Mom, I donāt want to go to the hospital. Whereās Chu Shenyu?"
"I sent someone to get him," Mrs. Chu said nervously. "Of course we have to go to the hospital! Weāll get you thoroughly checked out. You can stay for a couple of days and recover."
Zhu Yun nodded listlessly and allowed the others to help her unsteadily down the stairs. As she passed Lin Jin, she saw a look of lingering anticipation and satisfaction deep in the other womanās eyes.
But Zhu Yun still trembled. "Lin Jin, I really didnāt mean to walk in on you two. And I didnāt see you emerge with your clothes all disheveled that other time... D-donāt have your family come after me..."
Mrs. Chu patted her on the back. "Good girl, no one is going to come after you. Weāre the ones who are going to go after them! This was an attempt on your life. It must be investigated thoroughly."
Zhu Yun was taken to the hospital in a three-wheeled pedicab, the people with her shouting, "Whereās the doctor? A pregnant woman is in distress! Itās critical!"
As luck would have it, a middle-aged woman signing papers at a window in the lobby immediately dropped her pen. She rushed over, instructing a nurse to make preparations while directing the crowd to place Zhu Yun on a gurney and wheel her toward the operating room.
The woman, Doctor Zheng, reached out to press firmly on Zhu Yunās abdomen, but the moment her hand made contact, Zhu Yun stopped her and shrieked, "OWW! Doctor, are you trying to murder me? My babyās in here! Youāre going to press it to death!"
Doctor Zhengās expression froze. "I barely touched you," she said coldly. "Why are you being so delicate? How am I supposed to know whatās wrong if I donāt examine you? If we delay treatment, youāll be the one to regret it."
Zhu Yun shook her head, her teeth clenched. "Iām scared of the pain. You canāt press on my stomach."
Without a word, Doctor Zheng narrowed her eyes and took Zhu Yunās pulse. Her expression changed instantly. "The patientās condition isnāt good. We need to schedule surgery immediately. Have the family sign Form Number Three."
The nurseās lips tightened. She gave Zhu Yun a sympathetic glance before hurrying out.
Doctor Zheng turned to someone beside her. "Prep the anesthesia, quickly. The baby will likely be premature. Itās not quite seven months, but if thereās any chance, weāll do everything we can to save it."
She then turned back to scold Zhu Yun. "Donāt you know youāre pregnant? With a belly this big, canāt you be more careful? A blow to the abdomen... the pain for the mother is one thing, but the baby took a hit. Who knows if it will end up with a disability?"
"If the babyās head was injured, what would you do then?"
As she spoke, she stepped aside to let a nurse administer an injection.
Zhu Yun grabbed the nurseās hand. "Wait until my family gets here. I want my partner with me. Iām scared..."
"Heh." Doctor Zheng laughed, exasperated. "Have some decency, maāam. Iāve been an OB-GYN for a long time, and Iāve never seen a pregnant woman so shameless as to ask for her husband to be with her."
"Giving birth is no different from taking a dump. Are you sure you want your husband in here for that?"
Zhu Yun still wouldnāt release the nurseās hand. "Then... then wait until my family signs the papers. In any case, Iām not getting any shot right now!"
