Chapter 118: Chapter 60: The 1950s Long-suffering Wife
Two people brought over a table and chairs and sat before him. Wearing masks, they covered their noses and mouths, opened their notebooks with a frown, and coldly asked, "Name, age..."
Wang Xianbing patiently answered each question.
"How did you meet Lin Jin, and how did you end up getting married? You visit the Lin Family every month. Who have you seen? What have you heard...?"
Wang Xianbingâs pupils constricted. He instantly realized the problem stemmed from Lin Jin!
He composed himself and answered with complete honesty. When he finished, he even asked, "Is there a problem with the Lin Family? Thatâs impossible, isnât it? Theyâre red capitalists, completely loyal to the Organization."
"However, if the Organization has found something, I will cooperate fully with the investigation. Iâll tell you everything I know and hold nothing back!"
After the questioning, Wang Xianbing was allowed to drink water, eat, and use the restroom before being brought back to the same room.
This happened five or six more times, and his answers remained the same.
Only then was he cleared of suspicion. Reeking, with disheveled hair and a messy beard, his clothes hopelessly wrinkled, he was finally sent back around lunchtime.
Under the gawking stares of his colleagues and their families, Wang Xianbing was utterly humiliated. Before he even reached his building, he was informed that he was suspended and to wait at home for further notice.
His face was numb; he had expected this.
He didnât even bring up the injury heâd honorably sustained in the line of duty. âIf Iâm not mistaken,â he thought, âthis must be related to Lin Jin, too!â
As he reached the base of his building, he instinctively looked up and saw Zhu Yun leaning out her open window, enjoying the show.
She watched him brazenly, her sharp, fox-like eyes filled with undisguised glee. She was nonchalantly munching on an apple, and she didnât look the least bit embarrassed at being caught. Instead, she produced a green mug from somewhere and started twirling it around one finger...
Wang Xianbing had been seeing red for days, and the sudden sight of that bright green made the rage he had suppressed for so long flare up, threatening to burn him to a crisp.
The neighbors coming and going followed his gaze, and upon seeing the scene, they all obligingly burst into laughter.
"Haha, sorry, I justâI just think the color of Director Yunâs mug is really something else!"
"Yeah, I wonder where she got it. Iâll have to ask her tomorrow and buy one myself. Itâd be nice for drinking water by the window."
"Oh, does Director Wang like it, too? I bet if you asked, Director Yun would give it to you for free..."
Wang Xianbing had clawed his way up from a poor mountain village to where he was today; he was no ordinary man.
His willpower was immense. He forcibly swallowed his rage and headed upstairs without a word.
As he reached the landing, he saw that Zhu Yun had already opened her door and was cracking melon seeds.
"Oh, Director Wang, where have you been? Can you get this filthy just by resting and recovering? Tsk, tsk. Then again, who knows where your wife has run off to? Doesnât she know how to take care of her man?"
Each step Wang Xianbing took felt heavy enough to break the stairs, filled with a tragic, world-shattering force. "Zhu Yun, is this fun for you? Are you happy to see my family like this?"
Zhu Yun nodded gleefully. "Happy? Of course Iâm happy. Iâm ecstatic!"
She raised an eyebrow, looking him up and down, growing more satisfied by the second. "Wang Xianbing, life is long. Itâs not about making mistakes, itâs about refusing to correct them."
"For a woman, marriage is like a second birth. If you didnât want the marriage your family arranged, you could have spoken up. I might have even respected you for being a man about it."
"Hah. You found your âtrue loveâ in the city but kept the one in your hometown on the hook. Did you think you were so magnanimous, deigning to toss me a few crumbs to eat?"
"You gave your parents money and a daughter-in-law to do all the work and be filial. It made you look good from every angle, didnât it?"
"With the work I was doing, I could have supported two of me. Why should I have to take your familyâs abuse?"
At this, the corner of Zhu Yunâs mouth curled up. "Youâll never understand what it meant for me to throw myself into that pond!"
That was a living, breathing person, left forever in that cold pond, who felt the overwhelming despair, injustice, and bitterness of drowning.
That was something Lin Jin, Wang Xianbing, and Old Mrs. Wang could never atone for!
Wang Xianbing froze for a second. Then, he glanced at Chu Shenyu, who was quietly returning with food behind him, and smirked at Zhu Yun. "Zhu Yun, the truth is, youâre still bitter that you couldnât be my woman. Thatâs why youâre always watching my family, targeting Lin Jin in particular."
"Donât tell me youâre just waiting for a chance to take her place, are you?"
"Then again, itâs not impossible. Get rid of the baby in your belly, and I might consider it..."
Before he could finish, Zhu Yunâs leg shot out and kicked Wang Xianbing away.
The door to the opposite apartment had only been replaced a few days prior. With a loud CRASH, it once again gave way and slammed onto the ground.
