Chapter 518: Chapter 13: Illness
The dim bedroom was filled with the strong smell of herbs and the stale air that was characteristic of a sick person. Farrias half-reclined on the simple wooden bed, wrapped in a heavy old blanket, his face waxen, his breathing labored, and every cough making his hunched body tremble, causing the bed boards to creak.
Bonne held a small clay bowl, the bowl filled with steaming dark brown medicinal juice, its bitter aroma assaulting her nostrils. Her face, which was usually fiery and loud, now only showed deep worry and fatigue, the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes appearing deeper.
âGet up, you old fool.â Her voice was hoarse and low, yet her movements were surprisingly gentle. She sat on the edge of the bed, carefully propping up Farriasâs heavy head and neck with one hand to allow him to sit up halfway. âDrink it, donât dawdle.â
Farrias opened his eyes and sat up in bed, frowning instinctively at the bowl of medicine so close, and grumbled in protest: âWhat is this stuff, it smells awful, did you put chicken shit in it?â
âStop babbling nonsense!â Bonneâs tone carried a hint of her usual sternness, but the worry in her eyes relaxed slightly, at least enough to show that Farrias still had the strength to retort.
That was how Bonne saw it at the time, but this slight relaxation lasted only a few days.
Farriasâs condition did not improve from these few bowls of soup medicine; on the contrary, as time passed, it visibly worsened.
At first, he could still talk back to Bonne a bit, complaining about the bitterness of the medicine each time she fed it to him, asking her to add some honey.
But after a few days, complaints were rarely heard from him. When Bonne brought the medicine, he would just drink it and then close his eyes and fall back into a sleep.
He used to occasionally get out of bed to walk around or to enjoy the sun, but now, from morning till night, he mostly lay in bed, even sleeping through much of the time. Bonne had to spend a long time trying to wake him up each time.
âThis canât go on!â
Bonne said worriedly to Messiah, âMessiah, go and find Max for me, ask him to get me a carriage. I need to take the old man out, to the city. These soups arenât working at all.â
âDidnât that wandering merchant say that the Light Goddess of the Light Church can heal people? Iâll take the old man to see.â
Bonne had, from some source, heard about the Light Church. This rural woman, who had never set foot outside her small town, immediately sought out her son Max and asked him to prepare a carriage, preparing to cross the forest she often spoke of, which was home to terrifying wizards, to go beyond.
Max hoped to wait for the wandering merchant to come back and then travel with the merchant convoy to the outside, after all, Bonne was just an elderly woman who had never left her town, let alone driven a carriage alone through a forest.
However, Bonne stubbornly insisted that Max immediately prepare a carriage for her, perhaps because Farriasâs condition was now too dire to wait for the wandering merchant.
âThen let me accompany you, mother!â
Max reiterated his request, but was again refused by Bonne.
âThis isnât your responsibility, child.â
She knew full well that crossing the forest was risky and the chances were slim, but she was Farriasâs wife and likewise Maxâs mother.
Max was helpless.
However, fate was not kind. Before Bonne could embark on her journey, a snowstorm engulfed the town.
This storm came exceptionally fierce, making long-distance travel impossible in such weather. Farrias, in his current condition, couldnât endure the strain, so Bonne had to put the plans on hold temporarily.
It was half a month before the snowstorm passed.
By then, Farrias was nearly at deathâs door. His deteriorated state could no longer support making such a journey.
The room was filled with the strong odor of medicinal soup.
Bonne, her face full of worry, brought the freshly brewed soup to the bedside and gently nudged Farrias awake: âFarrias, Farrias, wake up, itâs time for medicine!â
She no longer scolded Farrias, speaking much more gently than before.

Farrias slowly opened his eyes and said tiredly, âDidnât I⊠just drink it?â
Bonne said, âThat was at noon.â
Farrias looked at the darkening outside and remarked: âTime flies so fastâŠâ
He paused, glanced at the medicine, and frowned: âI donât want to drink it.â
Bonne got angry: âYou donât want to drink it! How will you get better if you donât drink! Old fool, at this time, canât you stop worrying me!â
Her eyes reddened as she spoke.
âAlright, alright, I got it.â
Farrias muttered with his mouth, yet still persisted in drinking the medicine down.
It took him all of six tries to finish the little bowl of soup, even spitting up more than half of it in the process, before finally drinking it all.
In just this little while, it was as if he had excavated an entire mountain, exhaustion visible on his face, and as soon as he finished, his eyes closed and he fell back into a slumber.
âOld fool⊠old foolâŠâ
Bonne wiped the moisture from Farriasâs mouth before standing and walking out, staggering with difficulty as if she had aged twenty years in an instant.
Messiah watched this scene, his brow furrowing tightly.
She didnât understand the emotions in her heart, but she indeed felt exceptionally uncomfortable.
I have to do something!
After washing dishes for Bonne, Messiah donned a cloak and left the house, making her way to the large oak tree she had first arrived here by.
âCome out, I know youâre there!â
She turned her body, calling out repeatedly to the silent forest.
âWhoosh!~â
A breeze blew through the forest, and thenâŠ
âRustle!â
A faint rustle arose, as she saw a glimmer of light emerge from behind the oak tree, a tiny winged figure flew out from behind, it was Forest Fairy Xia who Lynch had assigned to protect Messiah closely.
Messiah looked at Xia, going straight to the point: âWhere is he? I need to see him, get in touch with him immediately!â
Her intuition told Messiah that Farriasâs situation was grave, beyond what Xia could handle, so she directly asked Xia to contact Lynch.
Xia frowned, clearly displeased with Messiahâs demeanor.
If not for her masterâs command to ensure Messiahâs safety, she likely would have flown up to punch her.
Thus, Xia could only suppress her displeasure, letting out a soft snort, then flapped her wings and circled a small loop in the air.
In this glowing, bluish circle, space rippled gently.
Then,
Lynchâs image appeared within it.
