Edie could feel her cheeks tingle, and her face got warm. "Stuart, I miss you," she said, lowering her voice to a whisper.
"Me too! I wish you were here," he spoke in a low, deep voice. "Weāll see each other in a few days. Goodnight."
Ivan entered Stuartās office as soon as he hung up the phone and passed Stuart a file. "Hereās the information you wanted on Clyde Jackson," Ivan said.
Stuart looked it over carefully and shook his head. "Hmmm...." was all he said.
"Do you want..." Ivan hesitated. "Do you want me to look into having someone replace him in the film?" he asked.
Stuart shook his head again. "No! I want to know what his intentions are," he replied.
Ivan was a little surprised and took a step back. "As you wish, Mr. Yates," he said.
The next morning, Edie woke up feeling refreshed. She quickly got ready and went to the dressing room. As she opened the door, it was filled with makeup artists working on the actresses from the cast. "Itās going to be a busy day," Edie said.
Several of the bit players were gossiping. "Have you heard the latest news?"
"No, what have I missed?"
"You know what happens when you sleep with someone whoās wealthy!"
"Who is it?"
"Itās Hicks Day. Sheās an actress in my company. Sheās starting to become rather popular, and thereās no way she did it by herself."
One of the directors entered the room to inform them, and they were almost ready. He stopped and listened. "Heās definitely a powerful man. Can you guess who it is?"
One of the actresses shook her head and said, "No, it couldnāt be. Do you mean Mr. Yates?"
"Sh..... she doesnāt say his name."
"No, itās not true. He doesnāt even bat an eye at any of the actresses, let alone a bit player."
"Oh, itās true. Itās supposed to be a secret," she whispered. "Stuart gave her a job at one of his companies, Universe Entertainment. And now Hicks only gets leading roles in films. The media has no idea, but word is spreading throughout the company."
"Iām jealous. How could she be so lucky?"
"All men are the same. Looking for a beautiful, innocent woman."
Edie couldnāt take their gossip anymore and quickly stood up, making them all turn around and look at her. Realizing she made a scene, she smiled and said, "Sorry, I need a glass of water."
Everyone nodded and went back to their heated discussion, and Edie stepped out of the room. The second she closed the door, she let a sigh of relief. "Thank God. I canāt stand listening to them talk about Stuart like that." She leaned against the wall. Her face was red with anger. "I would love to show them the picture of Stuart and me. That will definitely shut them up, but I canāt." Edie shook her head. "Stuart wanted to tell everyone, but I was the one who wanted to keep it a secret. I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later."
Back in the dressing room, the discussion went from Hicks to Edie. "Hereās some more juicy news about you know who."
"Are you talking about her," one of them pointed to the door.
"Yes! Canāt you see Clyde is in love with her? Thatās why Geneva was fired. It wasnāt because of her performance at all, and it was because of how she treated Edie."
"Yeah, I guessed that. I could tell by the way he looks at Edie."
"Then yesterday, Edie isnāt feeling well, and Clyde decides to call it a day. Come on! Clyde would never do something like that."
"Has anyone seen Clydeās post on Twitter? His fans are going crazy."
"I donāt think Edie likes Clyde because she doesnāt look at him in the same way."
"Do you think Edie is pretty?"
"Yes, sheās beautiful. Not a bit a wonder, Clyde has a thing for her."
"Did anyone watch her in the movie the White-Love Song. Edieās performance was amazing."
"Yes, she was good. If she became Clydeās girlfriend, he would give her whatever she wanted. Can you imagine? Iām so jealous."
"How did she get so lucky?"
There was an endless amount of gossip. Then suddenly shouted out, "Are you all finished? The stage supervisor is calling us," Salome Pamela said.
Everyone got up and left the room. "What a bunch of gossipers," Salome said as she left the room.
No one noticed there was still someone sitting in the corner of the room. Her face was pale, and her body was shaking. "Geneva, I wish you were here. Itās true, Clydeās in love with Edie," Vicky said, her voice quivering.
Vickyās cheeks were wet with tears, her eyes were red, and her hands shook viciously. "What am I going to do? I donāt know how to handle this situation between Edie and Clyde," she said, still sobbing. All of a sudden, she thought of something and took her phone out and dialed a number. She waited for someone to pick up on the other end of the line.
"Hello," the person on the other end said.
"I need your help. Itās Clyde, heās completely ignoring me," Vicky began sobbing uncontrollably, as she explained what was going on.
"Calm down. Itāll be okay. Weāll make Edie pay."
"Revenge! Really? What do you want me to do?" Vicky asked.
The person on the other end of the line explained what he wanted her to do. Vicky stared at the phone with wide eyes, not quite able to believe what she was hearing. "No, thatās illegal. I could never do that. What if my father found out, he would kill me," she said, shaking her head.
Vicky stood listening to the other person speak. "Iāll...." Vicky hesitated. "Give me some time to think about it. Okay?" She took a deep breath. "I will call you when I decide." And then she hung up the phone.
