Edie felt her heart sink all of a sudden, and she escaped his black eyes because she didnāt want him to see through her.
She dropped her head down and continued with her noodles as if she didnāt care, but the noodle... tasted bitter all of a sudden. She asked indifferently on purpose, "So... the reason why you were so busy was because of her?"
"Yes." Stuart was very honest, and he nodded without any additional actions.
Edie discovered for the first time that she actually kind of hated Stuartās honesty, he would never lie. His love for her was real, but so was the fact that he couldnāt forget about another woman.
How she wished that Stuart could explain it euphemistically to her or even lie to her, she would accept it willingly.
"Why are you telling me this? You saved her, not me. It would be weird for me to go." Edieās head was still down, she was forcing herself to calm down, but as soon as she opened her mouth, her words started shaking uncontrollably, she could not disguise at all.
She wanted to act more generous, but... it was too hard, and sheād rather Stuart had never told her, at least knowing nothing would be much better than facing the harsh truth.
"You little dummy, what are you thinking? Thereās nothing between the two of us, and there must be someone behind all this. This person is making all this effort because he knows that she looks exactly like Marina Daisy. The reason why I didnāt tell you earlier was that I didnāt want you to worry too much. Now that sheās awake, I want you to come together with me to visit her."
Hearing this, Edie couldnāt help but complain inside. If you donāt want me to worry, then donāt ever tell me! Now that she knew the reason why Stuart stood her up was that woman, she felt even worse.
She knew that Stuart had always been tolerating Hicks because she looked exactly like Marina, Edie could understand, but it didnāt mean that she was not afraid.
She never dared to compare herself with Marina, and she always brainwashed herself that since Marina was dead, why get too caught up with it? However, if you think about it from another perspective, only when a person dies, can she become eternal. She died a sudden death when Stuart was still deeply in love with her, and this meant that Stuart would never forget about her.
After all, he knew Marina first; she was the first woman to touch him; they knew each other well; they had blessings from everyone; they were about to get married. Young peopleās first love is always pure and moving. But she died, because of Stuart, the guilt and regret could never be healed.
Edie believed that Stuart must have been suffering all these years emotionally. Itās humiliating to a man when he cannot protect his beloved woman and even makes her suffer a painful death.
She couldnāt tell if Stuart still loved Marina, but the guilt... had always been there.
And this guilt would continue until the end of Stuartās life.
Because of guilt, he couldnāt bear to see the exact same thing happen to Hicks, if Hicks died, he wouldnāt even let himself off.
In conclusion, Edie understood why Stuart care so much for Hicks, but as his wife, how could she not be jealous?
"Iām not going, sheās your employee, I have nothing to do with her. I still have class tomorrow morning." She poked the noodles with her chopsticks and felt a loss of appetite, but when she recalled that Stuart made this bowl of noodles, she loathed throwing it out.
Edie scolded herself inside, and she cared too much for this man.
Despite her mental activity, she still finished her noodle and delivered the empty bowl to the kitchen sink, and said while walking, "Have a nice meal, Iām tired, Iāll sleep with Cecil tonight."
As Edie was about to leave the kitchen, she discovered that Stuart had already blocked her way. He smiled impotently and asked, "Are you jealous?"
"No.," she replied without hesitation.
As she was about to pass him, Stuart suddenly held her tightly. She said angrily, "Let go of me; Im going to sleep. I donāt have time to meddle around with you."
"Are you angry with me? Iām sorry." Stuart apologized. His breath blew across her ears, which made her ears itchy.
"For what?" She asked.
"..."
"You donāt even know what youāre sorry for, and you apologize?" Edie was frustrated, she lifted her foot and stomped hard on Stuartās slipper.
Stuart clearly felt pain but didnāt express it, and said, "If you get angry, it doesnāt matter whose fault is it, itās all my fault."
Edie felt warmth in her heart after hearing those words, and then she suddenly realized that something was not right.
"Itās clearly your fault! Why are you making it sound like Iām the unreasonable one? At first, you didnāt tell me because you worry that I might misunderstand you two. Then why are you telling now? Why arenāt you worried anymore?"
"Because..." Stuart winced; he wanted to say something but stopped and held Edie even tighter.
"Tell me why! Why arenāt you speaking?" Stuartās reaction made Edie even angrier; she struggled to break free from his hug, "Let go of me! Iām going off to bed, and you can save whoever you want and look at whoever you want, itās none of my business."
But, no matter how hard she tried, he just wouldnāt let go, even if she bit him, hit him or pinched him, he still wouldnāt let go.
Noticing that he didnāt fight back, Edie was furious. Finally, she clenched her jaw and bit him on the shoulder with all her strength, but Stuart didnāt make even one noise.
It was not until she tasted blood in her mouth that she realized she had bitten through his shoulder. Edie let go at once, the pain made Stuart wince, but he still refused to say anything, the anger was elevated again by this reaction, Edie broke down in tears.
"Are you stupid, why didnāt you walk away?"
"I didnāt want to let you go; Iām afraid that youāll leave me." Stuart raised his hand and started wiping away her tears, he wiped with great care, with unspeakable gentleness, as if he was wiping a treasure.
His eyes were complicated, with many hidden emotions that Edie couldnāt comprehend, but she could clearly feel sadness in his eyes.
Stuart... is sad. Why?
Why did she feel that Stuart was hiding something from her?
Edie stared at him, then a voice came into her ears, "As long as you donāt leave me, you can do anything you want to me."
